This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Neighbors for nearly twenty years, Boulevard Brewing Company and The Roasterie share a passion for making extraordinary beverages. In Coffee Ale, our two celebrated brewing traditions come together in a long-awaited collaboration. Ethiopian Sidamo from Africa’s Great Rift Valley has been carefully blended with rye, oats, and malted barley, and spiced with Perle and Styrian Golding hops. The delightfully fragrant beer presents a glowing, tawny-amber hue. The clean, crisp acidity of the air-roasted coffee mingles with malt on the palate, lingering faintly in a subtly sweet finish.

Poured from bottle to an Boulevard tulip. Batch 2013-1.

A: Deep mahogany with ruby hues, thick foamy copper head with great retention, lots of particulate and lively carbonation.

S: Dark roasted coffee, oats, malt, rye, earthy hops.

T: Strong malt presence, The Roasterie's Ethiopian Sidamo coffee, rye, earthy hops, and sugary finish.

M: Full-bodied, a bit chunky, with a sickly sweet finish. Not as sickly as the Chocolate Ale, but still a tad on the sweet side for my tastes. Minimal hops bitterness. The 9.3% ABV is masked well.

O: Nicely done. Everyone and their brother has done a coffee stout, so I like Boulevard's tack in collaborating with a local roasterie on an ale. This is my second bottle, I had my first immediately after the release, and I think the flavors profile has evened out the beer is a bit better overall after a couple months on the shelf. (872 characters)

750 ml bottle, batch 2013-3, best by 10-2013. Pours copper amber with a huge pillowy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is strong roast coffee with some sweet lactic chocolate.

The flavor is some sweet malt with a lot of roast coffee and some acidic bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, pretty one-dimensional, but a nice coffee beer. (428 characters)

Appearance: dark brown in color, 1 and a half inch head, medium carbonation, cloudy

Smell: coffee roast and toasted malt

Taste: deep roasted coffee, light cream, chocolate, and sugar

Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation, medium body, sweet and rich with light bitterness

Overall: I have had a lot of great coffee beers lately. While this does not achieve greatness it is solid and very food. The coffee is prominent in this one, but reserved just enough from making it a coffee bomb. Glad I was able to have this. (512 characters)

Huge carbonation during pour. Chocolate brown in appearance. Coffee on the nose and nothing else. Velvety mouthfeel. Dark roasted coffee flavor, slightly alcoholic aftertaste. Similar to Founders Breakfast Stout, but not as intense in flavor and aroma. Very good. (263 characters)

Enjoyed this on tap at the Tap House Grill in Westmont, IL in a 10oz snifter.

A - Mahogany, opaque, small ring of mocha head around rim, small light lacing

S - Fresh ground coffee, toffee, carmel and chocolate

T - Fresh coffe, sweet milk chocolate, toffee, carmel, butterscotch. Initially it starts bitter - finish is quite sweet.

M - low/med body, coffee is very pleasant, not frothy or creamy, coffee does linger

O - Wow is the coffee flavor nice! Blends very nicely with the sweetness of the chocolate and butterscotch. If only the body was thicker. This does have potential to be Fantastic. ABV is hidden so well. Nose again, has that excellent coffee notes. But until things thicken up- it will stand as 'good' (720 characters)

Another fine creation by the team at Boulevard. The coffee ale is a great after dinner apertiff. The beer poured a deep redish amber with off white head that left some lacing. The scent was espresso driven with sweet hints. The taste had dark chocolate mixed with coffee....a mochachinno. Honestly....mix some coffee with B's chocolate ale....and you have the coffee ale. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall, this is a great beer. (458 characters)
