Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Neighbors for nearly twenty years, Boulevard Brewing Company and The Roasterie share a passion for making extraordinary beverages. In Coffee Ale, our two celebrated brewing traditions come together in a long-awaited collaboration. Ethiopian Sidamo from Africa’s Great Rift Valley has been carefully blended with rye, oats, and malted barley, and spiced with Perle and Styrian Golding hops. The delightfully fragrant beer presents a glowing, tawny-amber hue. The clean, crisp acidity of the air-roasted coffee mingles with malt on the palate, lingering faintly in a subtly sweet finish.

"Neighbors for nearly twenty years, Boulevard Brewing Company and The Roasterie share a passion for making extraordinary beverages. In Coffee Ale, our two celebrated brewing traditions come together in a long-awaited collaboration. Ethiopian Sidamo from Africa's Great Rift Valley has been carefully blended with rye, oats, and malted barley, and spiced with Perle and Styrian Golding hops. The delightfully fragrant beer presents a glowing, tawny-amber hue. The clean, crisp acidity of the air-roasted coffee mingles with malt on the palate, lingering faintly in a subtly sweet finish." Brewed in the style of an American Strong Ale. Available in a limited-run 750ml. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 750 ml. to a Boulevard Smokestack tulip glass. Served above 56 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a golden tan white head of a crisp frothy consistency over a maple brown body with lots of sediment in tow. Retention is average and lacing is light and streaked. 3.5

(Smell) Fruity and lightly roasted coffee bean up front, with notes of bready caramel malts and a moderate sweetness underneath. Some alcohol warmth and esters are difficult to glaze over. It's a nice presentation of the widespread aromatic qualities of coffee beans without coming off too heavily roasty or watered down. Potency is medium/high. 3.75

(Taste) Mainly a continuation of the aroma, soft caramel bread and cocoa powder with a pairing bold yeast fruitiness of raisin and date is topped off with a wave of sweetened coffee and caramel cream for a nearly dessert-like midsection. Finishes on an acidic coffee bean note with a soft alcohol graininess. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, oily and softly dry. Carbonation is medium, generating a mild crispness. Body is light/medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is equally earthy bitter to sweet. Alcohol presence is mild, and there are no off characters to mention. 3.75

(Overall) Pretty good all around. There's no mistaking that coffee is the main focus of this beer throughout the entire experience and I enjoy what seems to be a softly roasted bean choice with a lot of fruity and earthy character to impart unique flavor to the beer. The balance is enjoyable as well. I wish I had enjoyed this earlier as the flavors are potentially faded from where I imagine they could have been at fresh, but I hope Boulevard teams up with their neighbor again to do a beer like this. 3.75

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter. Batch 2013-4. Best by 10-2013.
A: Pours a fairly clear but dark amber-brown hue with 1-2 inch off white head with good retention. (4)
S: Caramel malt, brown sugar, mild coffee and cream, and a hint of toffee. (3.75)
T: Follows aroma nearly exactly...caramel malt, brown sugar, mild coffee and cream, and--with warming--spicy rye comes through. I'm guessing the coffee note has diminished with age, but it does get stronger with warming. (3.75)
M: Medium body. Sweet and sticky feel. The ABV is quite well hidden. Nice lingering spicy rye and sweet cream notes on the palate in the finish. (4.25)
D: Still a solid brew. This is a year past the best by date and it is holding up fairly well. Comes across as a nice old ale. Starts off with good drinkability, but the high ABV eventually turns this one into more of a sipper. (3.75)

Coffee ale pours a dark brown color with a nice large lacing head. There is a mellow toasted malty aroma, with mellow coffee notes. The taste has a toasty flavor, with some noticeable coffee flavors, and there is a warm finish, and a sweet vanilla like aftertaste. Nice body, nicely melded flavors. Overall its very drinkable, and very nice and smooth to drink.
