American Wild Ale |  9.50% ABV

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes/Commercial Description:
Oak barrels were used to age the majority of beer used for Love Child No. 3—with beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years. Another portion of the beer spent 11 months in stainless tanks, souring on Lactobacillus. While very tart, the sourness is short-lived and the beer finishes dry with a trace of oak.

Got in a trade with cyde. 750 ml bottle into tulip glass; bottled on 2/28/2013, best before 2/2015. Pours moderately hazy deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge sour cherry, cranberry, green apple, lemon zest, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, oak, clove, leather, musty funk, toast, light bourbon, light vanilla, herbal, and oak/yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, oak barrel, and moderate malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour cherry, cranberry, green apple, lemon zest, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, oak, clove, pepper, leather, musty funk, toast, light bourbon, herbal, and oak/yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, cranberry, green apple, lemon zest, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, leather, oak, clove, musty funk, herbal, and oak/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Incredible complexity and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, oak barrel, and moderate malt flavors; with a great malt/acidity balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, slightly slick, and moderately acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding wild ale. All around fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, oak barrel, and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV with the balanced acidity. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle shared with Jayhawk at his Irish house party in March 2014, so this is about 14 months old now.

Poured a dark amber/copper color, very hazy, with a rocky head that fizzled pretty quickly (but I didn't pour it very hard). I've seen it on tap before (didn't drink it myself) and it looked darker then. Who knows. The smell was a mixture of bourbon/oak with some underlying sourness.

The tastes were a reverse of the smell - cherry and citrus sourness and Brett funk up front, with a bit of woody bourbon in the middle. The finish actually had a slight hop bite which was surprising but enjoyable.

I never know how to comment on mouthfeel. I didn't think about it while enjoying so it was good I guess. Overall a very enjoyable sour.
