This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Oak barrels were used to age the majority of beer used for Love Child No. 3—with beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years. Another portion of the beer spent 11 months in stainless tanks, souring on Lactobacillus. While very tart, the sourness is short-lived and the beer finishes dry with a trace of oak.

Poured into a standard tulip.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, murky brown with amber hues shining through as light strikes the glass. An off white, 2 finger tall head forms as the ale is poured. The head is oddly thick for a barrel aged sour and sticks around for a while, leaving no lacing behind.

Smell: Waves of lactic acid greet you as you raise the glass to your nose to get a whiff; Tart cherry pie filling, lemon flesh, and juicy tart apple. There is lots of musty funk from the brettanomyces lurking underneath the acidity; horse blankets, wet hay and lightly tanned leather. Hints of a caramel malt backbone are hiding underneath a strong coating of vanilla and coconut from the bourbon barrel.

Taste: Big lemon tartness right away, with notes of barnyard funk soon to follow. The middle of the taste is very short with more impression of bright, citric lemon and even more of the cherry pie filling that is present in the nose of the beer. The beer finishes more tart than sour and very dry with a light tannin presence. Lingering tones of leather, green apple intermingle with vanilla and coconut from the bourbon barrel. Not a single taste of alcohol is detectable, although since it is 9.5% ABV it does a having a warming effect.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: A damn good sour beer from Boulevard. The sourness level is kept relatively in check at this early stage in the beer's life. The sourness is very clean; not very acetic at all, so it remains pretty approachable at this particular young point in it's life. Also, because of it's freshness, the bourbon barrel is very prominent. As this beer ages, I think it will only become more funky and sour. Highly recommended for the sour novice.

750ml brown corked and caged bottle with a freshness date.

Look: Good lacing, clear reddish amber

Smell: Currants, lime pith, green olives, Portuguese sweet bread, funk, wild herbs, earthy, spice, tart, faint booze, wood

Taste: Tart throughout, mildly puckering, pulling wood, warming alcohol, hint of booze, faint vanilla, hint of maltiness, touch of funk, jasmine, faint olive juice, orange pith, quick flash of maltiness, dry fading tart finish

A bit more mellow and certainly more approachable than LC No. 2, the extra aging / blending really shows off here. Sip to sip this one keeps growing on me. Seek a bottle out now!

Poured from a 750 ml corked bottle into a New Belgium Globe glass. Batch number LC13060 with a best by date of 2/03/2015.

Appearance: Pours a deep and hazy brownish copper with a lot of bubbles. About two fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A complex tart and funky aroma with some nice bourbon barrel hints. Fruit forward with hints of tart and sour cherries as well as some berry, grapes, and apple. Brett and funk hints throughout. Barrel hints of bourbon whiskey, oak, wood, and some slight vanilla. Bready malt with hints of sweet caramel, toffee, biscuit, and yeast. No real hop scent. Fairly acidic. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a wild and complex taste of tart fruits, funk, barrel notes, and caramel malt. Big taste of tart fruit upfront with notes of cherries, grapes, berries, and apple. Funky Brett and yeast notes. Midway the barrel notes come through with a taste of bourbon whiskey, oak, wood, and vanilla. Sweet bready malts with notes of caramel, toffee, and biscuit. Somewhat earthy although there isn't really any hop flavor here. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. Tart, fruity, and fairly acidic. Finishes dry. Alcohol is hidden pretty well.

Overall: A pretty good sour ale. The fruit flavor is good and the barrel adds a interesting kick without overwhelming the sour notes.
