As a brewing team, we sought to make an India Pale Ale that showcased assertive hop flavor and aroma while maintaining a thirst-quenching drinkability by balancing the bitterness with a slight caramel malt character. A blend of our base pale, Marris Otter, and amber malts creates a simple, yet adequate malt backbone that allows Mosaic, Cascade, Amarillo, Citra, and Centennial hops to shine with bright, fruity, citrus notes. At 4.2% ABV and 41 IBUs, Pop-Up I.P.A. is a full flavored beer that’s suitable for all-day drinking.

12 oz bottle, best by 3/2/14. Pours slightly hazy golden orange with a huge frothy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is some sweet sugary fruit with piney resiny hops.

The flavor is sugary tropical fruit with a medium piney hop finish with decent bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little watery.

Overall, a decent session IPA. The flavor is dominated by the sugary tropical fruit rather than the hops. It does have decent bitterness though. Like most session IPAs I've had, it's a little thin and watery. I love the idea of session IPAs, but haven't seen one that really succeeds yet.

Appearance: 1 inch head, yellow in color, high carbonation, clear

Smell: pine, pineapple, and citrus fruits

Taste: pine, pineapple, and citrus fruits--like the smell but with some earthiness

Mouthfeel:sweetish start slightly bitter middle and and more bitter finish, light bodied with high carbonation

Overall: A nice, sessionable pineaple and pine forward IPA. I have had better beers from Boulevard, but this is certainly one I would revisit.

Rich golden in color with great clarity. Easily an inch of tightly knit eggshell white head. Brussels lacing. Just a hint of citrus hops is all I get in the aroma. The flavor is a gentle but sharp dose of citrus hops. The mouth is fairly carbonated making it a bit less sessionable. There's a crisp dryness that makes it refreshing.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger white head which slowly fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing.

Smell: An earthy and juicy hop forward aroma with good hints of citrus and grass. Earthy and floral hops with hints of grass. Citrus hop hints of orange, grapefruit, lemon, mango, and pineapple. Soft pale malt background with hints of grains, cracker, yeast, straw, and biscuit. A pretty solid hoppy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an juicy and earthy hop forward taste with nice notes of grass and citrus fruit. Earthy and floral hop presence with notes of grass and some slight pine. Citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, mango, and pineapple. Soft bready pale malt backing presence with notes of grains, biscuit, yeast, cracker, and straw. A pretty nice juicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, crisp, and slightly oily. Pretty smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a session IPA. Solid hop flavors with a nice light body.

A smallish off-white head caps a bright medium-dark yellow gold beer. There's a touch of haze to the body, though there's a flare of lighter gold as well. The head drops to a light island and some edging, leaving a strong ring and heavy spotting.
The nose makes a pretty impressive showing, putting out lots of bright citrus and zest. It balances sweeter and bitter notes well, letting the hops take charge. The flavor shows a bit of fussiness and a light must as well, finishing with both bright orange and bread crust.
The body is on the lighter side, just verging into medium. It's crisp but goes into the middle and finishes with a less refined bite.

Light gold beer, very clear, and medium sized quickly fading, sticky white head. Aroma is bright miscellaneous fruits, floral, and citrus. Quite pleasant, easy going, and fresh. Taste is extra clean and seemingly simple. Flavors are lemon, orange, lightly herby, flowery, evenly fruity, and faintly tea-like over a soft light sugar cookie (w/out the sugar) malt base. Simple, delicate arrangement of happy things with light bitterness. Mouthfeel is slick and smooth with light body. Very sessionable/extremely drinkable. Mission accomplished here. A very friendly amicable beer.

Appearance - Pours relatively clear and golden in color with a slightly off-white, rocky two finger head. Great retention. eventually settling to a fair layer of surface suds.

Smell - Fruity, citrusy, lemon-like hop aroma with grainy malts taking up the backend of the smell.

Taste - Follows the nose. Light, fruity hop that hits mostly on a sweet lemon flavor and a bready, grainy malt character. Aftertaste is a light, lemony essence.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied with light, fluffy carbonation and texture. Drinks smooth.

Overall - Drinks so light, I'd be tempted to call this a hoppy blonde. Certainly not on the level of session IPA's that Founders, Stone and Lagunitas have put out, but it's far from bad. That said, I probably wouldn't buy it again.
