Notes/Commercial Description:
As a brewing team, we sought to make an India Pale Ale that showcased assertive hop flavor and aroma while maintaining a thirst-quenching drinkability by balancing the bitterness with a slight caramel malt character. A blend of our base pale, Marris Otter, and amber malts creates a simple, yet adequate malt backbone that allows Mosaic, Cascade, Amarillo, Citra, and Centennial hops to shine with bright, fruity, citrus notes. At 4.2% ABV and 41 IBUs, Pop-Up I.P.A. is a full flavored beer that’s suitable for all-day drinking.

Appearance: 1 inch head, yellow in color, high carbonation, clear

Smell: pine, pineapple, and citrus fruits

Taste: pine, pineapple, and citrus fruits--like the smell but with some earthiness

Mouthfeel:sweetish start slightly bitter middle and and more bitter finish, light bodied with high carbonation

Overall: A nice, sessionable pineaple and pine forward IPA. I have had better beers from Boulevard, but this is certainly one I would revisit.

I remember the first time I tried it and didn't like it. I did not have the pallet for hoppy beers at all. Now when I want a good overall IPA i go for pop up session. It reminds me of summer and all that goes with it. Boulevard overall make great beer.

12oz bottle (best by 5/16/14...just missed it0 poured into a Bruery tulip.

A - An aggressive pour yields a pale straw gold colored beer in the glass, plenty of floating particulates suspended in the glass and a thick 2 fingers of fluffy white head with good staying power and plenty of soapy lacing left on the glass.

S - Sweet maltose base shows first, followed very closely by an orange blossom citrus aroma and a slightly metallic smell. A touch of honey and straight up maltose add to the malt presence. Doesn't smell especially bitter.

T - Grassy and citrusy hop flavor up front, very light and mild hop bitterness. A honey-ish sweetness from the aroma continues into the flavor. Not especially impressive, but good...gives the impression that you could drink this from morning to night - which seems to be the idea with a session IPA.

M - Super smooth and easy drinking...the honey sweetness, grassy hop flavor and low bitterness make this a craft beer version of Bud Light. Lighter body and lowish/medium carbonation continue the quest for smooth rather successfully.

O - Although not exciting, a perfectly drinkable session IPA for the summer months. Not up to the Founders All Day IPA or Lagunitas Day Time IPA in my book, but I wouldn't turn it down...and if I saw this in a cooler of beer at a party alongside the usual suspects, I would certainly grab this first. Functional, drinkable, enjoyable - yes...exciting and worth a special run to the store...maybe not.

Slightly hazy golden color with a massive head that was slow to settle to a thick cap. A lot of lacing is left down the glass.

Aroma is all citrus and grapefruit.

Comes off as being more bitter than other "session" IPAs. A lot of grapefruit flavor with some orange and lemon notes. A little bit of toasted malt in the finish but this is hop dominate ale.

Light body and oddly does not seem to be very heavily carbonated. Must of lost most of its life in the pour.

Tastes a little like a baby Two Hearted.
