Sheffield's is a bar filled with friendly bartenders and more often than not, friendly people. Of course, along with it must come friendly beer.
Sheffield's selection was something of a point of frustration for me over the years. Not because it wasn't good, it was actually really good. But I felt they could take it to another level. Not an easy thing to do considering you are in Wrigleyville.
Well, they recently did it. Their selection has become outstanding. It still falls short of Map Room and The Hop Leaf, but considering the Wrigleyville factor, they are really kicking ass.
The atmosphere is chill and the bar is huge. The front bar alone is nice. But when you step into the back it opens up to two more bars. One of them can be a room booked for private parties. That room is only open for special events and exceptionally busy nights like Friday and Saturday. The very back room contains a pool table and a lounging area.
They serve no food, except for free chile on Sundays for football. The people behind the place are starting to get creative with doing in-house special events such as the chile cookoff that happens from time to time on Sundays.
They also don't mind you ordering food in. To assist you, they even have a big ass book of menus.
Sheffield's is a place you can't miss if you are a beer fan in Wrigleyville and someplace you should visit from time to time regardless. Just avoid it after Cubs games if you aren't down with a large and sometimes terribly annoying crowd. Saturdays are usually packed. Friday's more reasonable. Every other day is rather chill with a few exceptions.
In the warmer months, the beer garden is outstanding. It can get extremely packed. But a Sunday evening in the garden is hard to beat.
Check out their website and join their mailing list. They will keep you informed of the special events which also include beer release parties. Bells and Goose Island do a fair number of release parties there and I wouldn't be surprised to see more happening in the future.
