Color is a rich, deep black with a very dark brownish tone, extremely thick, with a nice tan head about two fingers high and very patchy lace. Some dents and divets appear and stay around as it settles. Smells very strong in the alcohol dept., once past it, it really smells sweet, kinda like a spiked milk shake or something. Taste is a good toasty, roasted malt, kinda dry and sweet but creamy. Very interesting flavors and intial feel. But it feels quite lighter then normal for a stout that looks this thick.
This would make a good dessert beer, nice and roasty light.

OK, I'll admit it (which is more than I can say for some); this is a "memory review." Sadly, Maclay's Oat Malt stout is no more. Maclay's has become just another marketing and estate (pubs and inns) management company. The beers they sell under their name are now brewed by Belhaven.
Although listed here as a milk/cream/sweet stout; it's more properly an oatmeal stout. The difference is that the oats are not flaked, steamed, rolled oats, but steel-cut oats that were malted and kilned like barley for beer and whisky. This lent the beer a much smokier, concentrated flavor and a really creamy body.
While good in the bottle, this was spectacular on draught. Something I enjoyed as much as possible at the Edzell Golf Club. There are rumours that a Swedish brewer is making a version of this under license. Real stout lovers can only hope that they or someone else like O'Hanlons sees fit to resurrect this excellent beer and send it to us in the USA!
NB: Oat Malt Stout was also marketed as Asda's Hurly Burly Stout.

This is the top of the heap when it comes to stout. The fact that they malt the oats keeps it from getting a grainy taste and texture. It is ultra smooth, great body and a nutty oatyness from those malted oats. Alas I can no longer get this wonderious beer here in Oregon. I may have to start searching in Washington.

If you like oatmeal stouts, give this one a try. Nice nutty, caramel malt with a mellow, bitter finish. Very easygoing without being wimpy. A close second to Young's Oatmeal Stout IMHO.
