Right, well I took a trip up to Half Time in NY, went on a bit of a shopping spree, mainly francisweizen with his gift certificate, and I picked out 2 bottles of this lovely sounding Ducassis. Because I love black currants. However, I found the beer to be less than desireable, and it gave me a stomach ache. So deceiving!

Appearance was good, the best part of this beer. It was clear, a reddish-brownish colour with a dense but fluffy light purple head that lasted pretty long, and I kept swirling my glass to keep it going, as it was really the only thing I liked about the beer.

It smelled a bit on the bland side- but not bad really. Almost like a watered-down white beer, as there was a bit of spiciness to it. Not too much fruit though, which I thought was dissapointing.

Taste- Well francisweizen really wanted me to share this one with him so I left him about 1/5 of the bottle, as I really wanted the whole thing, it being a cassis beer and all, and when he tasted it he poured the rest into my glass. Not a good sign. So I took a sip- not good. It tasted watery, like seltzer water with not enough fruit flavour in it, kind of spicy but really it was too watery and fizzy to get much out of it. There was also a corn flavour in it which did come through more than anything else, which reminded me a lot of DFH Au Currant, which I also didn't care for. Where are the currants??

Mouthfeel was OK, not terrible but a bit on the thin side and really fizzy. I think maybe if it were not so carbonated then maybe there would be a bit more flavour, maybe a good flavour? Maybe not.

Drinkability- no more, thanks. Like I said it gave me a stomach ache. For some reason I finished the bottle of it though, quickly. I don't really know what I'm going to do with the other bottle of it. I don't plan to drink it, at least not if I'm sober and can taste well..

In conclusion, if you like DFH Au Currant, you will probably like this, but it has less flavour than that even. Otherwise, leave it on the store shelf. Do not be fooled by the pretty label!

I had a few ticker-inspired impulse buys earlier in the week... This is the first of those reviews...

Bottle into Captain Lawrence tulip.

A reddish purple murky color-- looks like a really bad bruise after a few days. Light tan head furiously bubbled for 30 seconds, but faded fast. The beer seems more like a wine spritzer... Virtually no fruit character, and certainly no black currant. The little fruit I find is more like a generic berry note, like wild berry fruit punch.

This isn't the worst beer ever, but this is like a Belgian version of Wild Blue... And that isn't a good thing. No lacing, no retention, very weak nose, and a flavor that barely hits any of the promise the label appeared to make. The body is very thin, and pretty overcarbed.
This is pretty unenjoyable in most aspects by which I would rate a beer.
This reminds me of blackberry Clearly Canadian-- but not in a good way.

.Dry red colour, with white-pinkly head.Smoothy. The smell is black currant, and some spicy. Natural black currant, no chemics. And the flavour goes better. Black currant in your mouth with some funky flavour, and dry finish. the one i´ve tried has 3º.

A: Nice color. No head at all from my pour and there is fruit bits at the bottom of the glass.

S: Overwhelming fruit smell.

T: Nice tart currant taste. A hint of funkiness that is a little off-putting.

M: Smooth, almost no fizz. Kind of like drinking grape juice that is slightly carbonated.

D: I could drink this. I'd definitely choose it over a lot of drinks, but not one of my favorite lambics. Definitely a nice summer choice.

(served in tulip glass)
A- This beer has a deep cranberry crystal clear body with some bubbles racing through floatsum to the surface. The thin bubbly white head last for a good bit.
S- This beer has a fruity dry black currant aroma. There is a slight farm note that grows as it warms with black currant skins in the finish.
T- This beer has a dry black fresh currant flavor with a soft iced tea flavor and a finish of carbonic acid bite.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a crisp finish and no alcohol heat.
D- This beer is almost a dry cassis soda pop that is refreshing that showcases the berries but little malt or hops support. There is lots of sediment in the bottom that makes the 11.2oz bottle even smaller.

A- Pours a slightly hazy brownish-red. Soft lavender-tinged head rings the glass

S- Tart currant aromas

T- Very light in flavor. Its tasty, but so is ___-flavored soda water. Something's sorely missing here.

M- Thin. Ribena has more body (and more flavor for that matter) than this. The amount of carbonation is pleasant however

D- If it were 100 degrees out by the pool, this would be da bomb. It drinks like flavored soda water.

I decided to try another cassis to compare to Lindemans.

It's almost a grapefruit color, with a thin white head. Honestly, i'm having trouble distinguishing the smell from Welch's grape juice. The faint taste is washed away quickly by what feels like a gush of soda water. The lingering taste of currant is somewhat pleasant, but overall I'll stick with Lindemans.

Pours a clear garnet with a small white head. Nose smells like tart berries with sugar sprinkled on top. Flavor is tart and dry cassis with a smooth overall tone. It doesn’t sway or wander from the original hits you get and over time it gets even nicer. Feel is low on carbonation and is smooth overall. For a flavored beer, this is actually pretty smooth - though I will admit that I kind of dig these kinds of brew. I am not sure if cassis is a flavor everyone would go for, but I like it and think it is worth trying.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy pink lemonade color with a sturdy pale lavendar head that leaves shards of lace; little floaties abound in suspension

Smell: Others must have had old bottles as mine has a fulsome aroma of tart black currants

Taste: Opens with a slightly tart flavor of black currant and that flavor persists for a long time on the palate; the finish is dry, with a touch of woody flavor

Mouthfeel: Light body and highly carbonated

Drinkability: A lovely beer for a summer apertif; others have complained about the lack of complexity but that is not the point with this beer; it is the beer drinkers answer to a kir

What an uninteresting Belgian beer! It pours a slightly reddish purplish color, with little if any head. There is little carbonation either. The smell is a bit fruity and nice, and clearly the high point of the beer. The pour is a little hazy but there are no yeasty bits floating about. At the bottom of the bottle you find some loose sediment. They tell me the fruitiness is blackberry currants. I won't argue. The beer is very bland, there is a hint of fruit in their somewhere maybe like watered down grape juice, no hoppiness at all. The mouthfeel is just light and insubstantial. This could be a thirst quenching summer-ade, but why spend the money for that. This is just a bland, uninteresting, light bodied, beer that hasn't much going for it. There is a little bit of a bite at the end, but no soury feel or interesting yeasts coming through. Keep looking.

Pink in small quantities with a pink-ish/red color overall and a bit chuncky. The light pink head dissipates quickly leaving a light carbonation ring. Interesting grape juice aroma with some tart raspberry character and light medicinal qulaities. The only beer I can remember that tastes so similar to grape juice. Light bodied and a bit airy with a lightly tart raspberry-like finish.

Per Label: "Kasteel-Brouwerij" & "Cassis"

Per BDG website: The first top fermented beer to be made with real blackcurrant berries.

Pours with an off-white, purplish tinged, initially two-finger thick head that leaves some lacing patterns as if slowly subsides. The beer shows a purplish hue as it is poured, but rests a brilliantly clear, deep red color in my glass. The aroma is quite fruity, sweet and berry like, with a sold current aroma that is sweet, fleshy and even has a tannic fruit skin type thing to it. Not much else is noticeable underneath the currant notes.

Wonderful, the beer is not sweet at all like I had feared, instead it leans towards a lightly tart fruit character. It is pretty well carbonated as well, though not overly so, and is quite light on the palate. This beer is quite fruity, but, because of the lack of sweetness, it is in a non-traditional way. It has a fleshy berry character that I can't quite describe; it almost takes on a touch of tannic astringency, but this is not all that noticeable and perhaps adds to the mouthfeel more than anything. I could certainly wish for a bit more body here though; a touch more tannic character would do the trick. This is quite light, and even refreshing, but the flavor just doesn't seem to do much for me. I am surprised to say it, but a hint of sweetness here might even be welcome, though I wouldn't want much.

11.2 ounce slim brown bottle without freshness dating.

Pours pinkish-brown with giant chunks of floating protein and a half-inch of soapy pink head. Smells of sweet dessert-like raspberries and black currants. Flavor follows the aroma, with no complexity whatsoever. Sweet currant and raspberry fruits on a slightly bitter, stale, and phenolic base. Thin and watery mouthfeel with strong carbonation. Not something I would buy again. A good-quality geuze makes a much better aperitif.

Selection of the Beer-of-the-Month Club
Poured a light purple color with massive puffy head. Modest lacing.
Smell is berry-like with notes of raspberry and grape.
Taste is similiar to a dilted grape juice mixed with cranberry. Nice for a fruit drink, but just OK for a beer.
Finish is very thin, with some fruitiness continuing, as would be expected from this beer.
Easy to drink, but one is definitely enough.

Again, from the Beer of the Month Club, this beer pours purple-tinged, cloudy amber with a medium sized pinkish head which diminishes to a 1/8" ring for the remainder of the glass with decent lacing. Aroma is grapes and citrus peels, similar to some grape sodas. Mouth feel is very thin and fizzy, quite unlike a beer and more like a wine cooler or spritzer. Taste is likewise. I could see where some may like such a beer, but for me it doesn't feel like drinking a beer at all. Ok, but I will pass in the future.

This beer poured a cloudy strawberry color with some purple highlights. The head was a slightly pink and purple film.

Smelled of fake kool-aid like grape with a salty spiciness hiding beneath that reminded me of barbecue. As fake as this smelled, if I really looked for it, there was a musky organic grape there as well.

The dynamics of the beer followed a light and tingly foaming carbonation that leaves a slight concord grape and musky woodiness, but the flavor was mostly really watery.

The mouth feel was a huge swarm of carbonation that falls to a watery smoothness. Meh.

Not impressed at all. When would this be good to drink? I can’t figure that out. Too thin with a wild carbonation and insubstantial flavors and smells. Skip it.

Poured a dark but clear pink colour with a big frothy head. Big carbonation in this one with bubbles streaming up from everywhere in the glass. Fruity and sweet aroma, with a strong smell of black currants. Surprisingly, its not as sweet as I anticipated. The strong fruit flavours are there, but without the candy-sweetness of some fruit beers. Finishes crisp and slightly tart, but still refreshing. I found it to be a great dessert beer. Also rather thirst-quenching on a hot day.

It's an 11.2oz bottle. The label says DUCASSIS and "La fruitée des Géants" and has a picture of a grapevine.

And so it pours a reddish purple, with an effervescent purplish white head. The aroma, not suprisingly, is faintly of grapes and nothing else.

And guess what, it tastes like grapes too, but it seems like they threw the whole vine in the fermenter instead of just the fruit. And that's about it. There is no aftertaste to speak of.

Light bodied, carbonated, and a little sticky.

Overall I am unimpressed and would not seek this beer again.

Hmmm ... brewery of Giants! This will be my first sampling of a beer from brasserie Des Geants. The beer pours a pleasant, murky plum color with a short raspberry-colored head that doesn't stick around long. Nose is subtle at best; weak at worst. Definitely smells fruity, but lacks a real punch. I expected something a bit more pungeant. Odd thing, I don't detect any of the tell-tale Belgian yeast, or the sugary sweet aromas I'd expect. Palate is unfortunately likewise ... wow. Is this a beer? At first taste, this reminds me of a carbonated spring water with a fruit flavoring added. Unfortunately it's that thin, bland, and non-descript. I do taste more fruit than I smelled, but that's not saying much. Very high carbonation, which makes this even more like a water drink, and almost no sweetness to help the mouthfeel. Thin and bland, this beer isn't what I had hoped. That being said, it's not bad for a non-beer drinker really. They might like it, but it doesn't have the soul of a beer. I finished this and have two more ... but I definitely am disappointed. I also have their Tripel, so we'll see if Des Geants dedeems themselves. Final statement ... not a bad DRINK, but not a good beer.

33 cl bottle. Pours a somewhat muddled shade of red, darker than pink, but not quite ruby, with a light head that is welling up with bubblesas the carbonation excapes the solution and breaches the surface. This one is not very clear, with just shadows being visable behind the glass. The nose is moderately fruity, with some tart notes of black currants and some lighter raspberry notes. The yeast imparts a slight spiceyness to it that adds a layer of complexity that I like. Flavor is not as expected. It lacks the fruity character that I found in the nose. It has a very mild currant flavor that fades into a dry and spicey and wheaty finish. It just seems a bit light overall in the flavor. The aftertaste is not one that I am enjoying either. It tastes a bit papery, but not like something that has been oxidized. Mouthfeel is moderate with a moderate carbonation of very fine bubbles. I'm surprised that the carbonation has not killed itself with how much bubbling it did when poured. Overall, I don't see this one finding its way to my glass again. The flavor just falls short, lacking the fruit character and finishing a little offensive.

Pours a very frothy head with lots of carbonation. Color is plum like.
The aroma was very strong and tart like. With a slight sniff of sweetness. Black currant.
The taste was not what I expected. Was thinking it was going to be a bit sweeter and not as tart. Lots of carbonation gives it a champange feeling. Its almost like watered down grape juice with no sweetner added. Rather unimpressive.

Poured from the bottle into an oversized wine glass. Poured with a nice heavy carbonation, every surface of the glass was covered with bubbles. Crystal clear crimson color. The aroma was light and mostly fruity with the black currant apparent.
The flavor was clisp, slightly tart, and had the expected black currant type sweetness to it, but there was something else in the flavor. A sour bacterial infection type flavor. I expect that I waited to brink this for too long as I took it from the back of the beer fridge and this flavor suggests that I was right. Other than that it was decent and light in mouthfeel. Drinkable, but the infection flavor keeps me from giving it a higher score.
