12/25/13 From bottle at Rattle n Hum, NYC.

First impression is a lack of body. A bit watery.

Not the usual spices but far from boring. My guess is allspice (pimenta) is the main spice here. None of the usual cinnamon/nutmeg/mace combos usually associated with spiced brews.

That being said this is a flavorful concoction. Tons of sediment.

Not wanting to list what this beer isn't (my first tendency), I'm sort of at a loss to say what it is. I guess I'm left with thinking if this is a 'Christmas' beer, that I'm glad it's only once a year because that's plenty.

Not that it's not good, it's just...you know...like candy canes...great when you have one & not so bad when you don't. In the not so bad, but bad enough for once a year family member category. Make sense?

Poured from a 1 pint 9 fl oz bottle, bottled on date blank.

Pours a hazy golden body with average retention and almost no lacing. Kind of boring. Aroma is brown bread and flavor expands on that with spices that grow in intensity as it warms. Smooth and chewy, it's decent enough; just needs to work on its appearance.

The label of this bottle looks just like the "Y" page from the "ABC's" book from Dr Seuss. I didnt notice this coinidenc in this store, but had I noticed, I would have purchased the bottle based solely on the label.

16 oz bottle (which happens to be the perfect size IMO) pours into a styrofoam cup. Give me a break, I am in a hotel room in the Keys without access to proper glassware. From what I saw, the beer looked amber in color and is topped with a stiff white head.

Aroma doesnt really possess any festive qualities. Its your basic bock with malt forward aromas, some grassy notes, perhaps a hint of cloves, but we are really just talking basic aromas here.

Nice flavor. Slight hop bite, maltiness, cracker like, bready, quite refreshing. The mouthfeel is great. Not too thin and not too chewy. A decent beer. Got this on sale at Total Wine for $1.99- Totally worth it!

9/23/14 - Had a couple bottles now that were actually NORMAL-seeming, the one tried in the original review must've been a bad and/or old bottle or something.

It's still a little cloying sweet side if you ask me but really not a bad bock. Certainly better than the bad bottle. Nice tastes of caramel, dark bread, dark fruits. A little boozy. Nice malty treat, though maybe a little on the bland side.

**original scores/review**

2.39 - 3.5/2.5/2.25/3/2

500ml poured into a pint glass a dull copper color with a white head. A ring left around the top with bits of lace.

Smell is really quite odd. Vanilla, caramel corn, confectionary sugar, grainy tones.

Taste is very sweet and feels off in general. Huge caramel/grainy/adjuncts/paper with some apples and earthy hops. Not good.

Lowish carbonation and a very malty, almost oily mouthfeel. Some booze.

Just not very pleasant to drink. Artificial sweet malts and paper tastes, doesn't really resemble a bock. Especially after enjoying Weissenohe Monk's Christkindl recently this seems like a disgrace to the style, and kinda to beer in general.
