1pint 9 fl oz brown bottle from The Lighthouse in Manchester. Pours a very cloudy opaque yellow body with a half inch of off-white head. Smells citrussy with banana notes. Tastes lemony with a fair bit of spice, nut, banana. Medium bodied with restrained carbonation. Tasty and complex for sure, but not the most drinkable example of the style. A good hef, but at over 6$ per bottle, this will probably be an occasional treat.

Cloudy dark banana yellow liquid with a sadly dissipating head. The bottle started to slowly gush on me when I uncapped it, but the head faded to almost nothing after a minute. I like the look of the liquid quite a bit, though. The aroma is very good with some sweet bananas mixed with clove and coriander. The flavor is similar with a healthy bitter bite at the finish. I actually wish that the beer was a bit less biting and a bit stronger, but then I dearly love Weihenstephan's version. The feel isn't quite right with the bitterness and a touch of astringency. The really unfortunate thing is that the good hefe flavors are in there. They just get a bit overshadowed by the problems. As for drinkability, I just love to drink hefeweizens. Reading about Prohibition killing American wheat beers makes me sad.

Pours a bright yet murky golden color with a smallish white head that was a bit disappointing for a hefe. The aroma is of a crisp wheat malt, some banana and clove, and a touch of pepper. The taste is of light banana and bubble gum, not a very sharp wheat presence, a bit watery in the taste. Rather ho hum in the taste department, a bit too watery. However the feel is not watery, moderate body, a bit fizzy, crisp but not too edgy. Quite a neutral feel. This has to be one of the easiest drinking brews that I have had. Goes down way easy. Though the flavor lacks, the smooth body with crisp carbonation makes this one easy to kick back. Though not very flavorful, no off-putting flavors. Worth a try, great for summer.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color with a short white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of wheat, bananas, light malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with bready flavors of wheat and a light malt character. Then some banana sweetness comes in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium-to-high carbonation, finish is clean.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, there are others in the style that I would choose first but this is still a solid beer to drink for a while.

A: Cloudy light orange color, small sticky head.

S: Cloves, yeast and a rough grainy wheat note.

T: Clove and slight bubblegum up front, yeasty with a rough but not quite harsh wheat flavor. Nice tart dry finish.

M: Rough and rustic but finishes calmly. High carbonation. Refreshing finish.

O: Rough and ready old school hefe. Would like to taste a fresher example but this is tasting good right now.

Gravity cask at Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn NY

A - Hazy yellow pour that has plenty of foam at first, but zero retention. Cloudy look from yeast sediment in the glass. Lacing is in thin rings.

S - Citrus scents hit the nose, as does a mild hoppy smell. Fresh cloves and banana show up as the beer warmed.

T - Some light grains and the yeast make this feel hearier than you might think. Spicy finish from spices and earthy hops. Minor amount of sugar but more of a tartness.

M - Raspy feel on the tongue. Fresh and clean finish. A very refreshing beer that I can only imagine being in a German biergarten and kicking back.

O - Not my favorite Hefeweisen (and with options like Weihenstephaner not the best import either) but a good example of what Germany enjoys regularly. I've enjoyed the sampling I've had fromt his brewery.

Notes from 5/6/13. Been on a righteous hefe kick.

Foam that would settle into a rocky head gushed from the bottle when I busted the cap. Dark grainy sediment.

This beer is conservative for a hefe but refined: what's in the nose (primarily bubble gum and banana) is spot on. Candied apple flavors. A bit watery.

This one is lighter and more effervescent than Ayinger (all time fave), Weihenstaph', and the like. I like a little more decadence in a hefe, but it's a pleasure to test the variance in one of my favorite styles.

Well its that time of year to start drinking up the wheat beers down here in NC,this one pours a hazy golden color with a nice blooming head that leaves some globs as it settles.Aroma is mainly spicey and clovey with a hint of iron, taste as well is on the spicey side a big shot of clove with some lemony tones in the finish.A good solid weisse spicey and a little tart, a real good one for a lazy hot day.

Pours a hazy apricot color with a 2" head that was slow to drop any (a dirty glass is suspected) eventually dropped to 1/4".
Smell is sweet, orange, malt, and grapefruit.
Taste Is grapefruit & orange, malty, earthy with an alcohol presence late.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a light effervescence all over the mouth and a slight warming in the throat.
Drinkability is very high. Good flavor (could use a bit more though) & balance with no downsides at all.

This beer poured light gold color and formed a foamy white head the disappeared fairly quickly leaving very little lace. A small medium amount of carbonation is present. The aroma is of hops, clove, banana and some grain. A flavor of hops, citrus and a touch of caramel. A bit sprite in the finish. Not a bad hefe, but nothing special.

A: Pours farily clear yellow, lots of yeast at the bottom of the bottle, swirled and poured. Now slightly cloudy yellow. Small white head, no lacing down the glass
S: Smell is of wheat, yeast and slight lemon zest
T: Good wheat taste followed by a citrusy sweetness.
M: Light to medium bodied. Prickly mouthfeel
D: Pretty drinkable Hefe. Not the best I've ever had but not bad at all.

bottle that i mixed and matched into a six pack at city wide in south bend. looks ok...a bit like pee but i use that only as a visual analogy, not a description of the quality of the beer (as so many others do). massive banana ester odor. very sweet smelling and fresh. wheaty, banana taste goes down easy...kind of like drinking a banana soda. i really like bananas though so this is good. refreshing too...tasty. solid mouthfeel. actually too banana-y to drink tons of because that would get old fast. i think its a good beer to have after you've already had a beer.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into an Erdinger weizen glass. Slightly hazy golden/straw color topped by a single finger of fizzy white head. Tons of carbonation keeps on coming for as long as there's beer in the glass. Aroma of crisp wheat, very light malt, and some clove spiciness. Not much in the way of banana or other fruit esters.
Palate is mildly sweet and highly agreeable. Light malt and some residual sugars up front yield to the crispness of the wheat mid-palate. Clove spice and a touch of sweet fruit come through towards the finish and linger in the back of the mouth. Body is light and well-carbonated, a great recipe for a highly drinkable beer. An excellent choice for sitting on the porch on a warm Labor Day weekend.

Appearance: Pours a hazy honey color with a big, frothy head; the retention was fair, as was the lacing

Smell: Wheat bread, apple and banana, with a clove-y aspect, as well

Taste: Whole wheat bread and banana, up front, with a developing apple and clove character in the middle; after the swallow, the banana returns, providing a sweet, banana pudding finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a somewhat spritzy character; lacks the creaminess to go along with the fizz

Overall: A decent example of the style, but there are better ones out there

Another German hefe. My local store stocks every German Hefe availaible so I tried this one. Very typical. Good head. Cloudy yellow/orange. Yeasty sweet nose. Citrus taste and a little spice. I would say this one is a little more orange tasting than others. Very enjoyable. A little watery but good

Pours a cloudy straw color with a rocky white cap that reduced a tad too soon. Lovely large bubbles of natural carbonation. Aromas that seem all too standard for a German Weiss- heffe...banana prevalent..spice, yet nutmeg and some clove over a semi sweet malt tone. Starts with a great peppery tart hit to the tongue then this melts to an oily-silk mouth feel punctuated with banana, nutmeg and sweet malts and the spice delivery of the yeast...hops and wheat are there at the finish to provide a clean refreshing dry finish...but there is something lacking in this Weiss that stands it off from the best...to me (a rank amateur) it seems to be a mellow=aged presence that exists in the best Weiss biers.

A nice find, to be sure. The more I try this style, the more I am learning to appreciate its nuances...

This straw yellow brew - yet rather murky - left a vigorously bubbly head upon a solid pour from the bottle. The aroma was filled with fresh-cut wheat, some hints of citrus. Chewy in its wheat texture, this one was a pleasure to sample. Paired well with a Bockwurt and some spicy German mustard...

Prosit!

Hazy light greenish yellow cast with a big and active charge and a very white-colored head. Leaves very little lace at all. Aromas of pineapple and estery dusty cinnamon and clove. Lightish mouthfeel, made more so by very spritzy and lively carbonation. Flavors of cotton candy, leaning toward a spiced bubblegum sense with a citrusy background. Solid yeastiness throughout. Tangy finish, elements of continuing esters into the full aftertaste. Refreshing and relatively true to style, could use slightly more body and fewer bubbles for my normal tastes in Hefeweizens.

Poured from a .5 L bottle to a big weissen glass. Pours fast not a lot of head. Liquid is medium yellow semi cloudy lots of big bobble carbonation pushing up a weak head. The 2 finger head is white and fades slowly leaving no lace.

The smell is citrus, some bready wheat and faint yeast.

The taste is of lemons and wheat, some notes of cloves in the finish

Mouth feel is thin, lots of carbonation action. This brew is very crisp, clean and refreshing in a light body.

Drinkability is very good as a mid day summer pick me up. The thin boby and under 5 % ABV fits just right, the perfect summer cooler. Prost MK

Mahr’s Weiss is a cloudy, slightly milk yellow liquid with a fairly large head. The head doesn’t have the life that I expected, but it produces a respectable lace. The aroma is tart and lemony. Wheat and grass are quite pronounced in the smell. It’s a pretty dry beer, with an emphasis on the tart, tangy, lemon-like wheat quality. The finish is notably dry and very crisp. Moderate carbonation, maybe a little low for the style. This is a fine, middle-of-the-road hefe.

Pours a hazy lemon/apricot color with minmimal white head and lots of action.

Lots of bubblegum and banana aroma with a hint of a sour note.

Has a bland buttery wheat grain taste with a hint of a sour butterscotch background.

Light bodied, buttery blended with a watery texture, and a lively soft carbonation.

A different taste to the point that this seems to elighten the optional methods and recipes from the country most known for this style.

Purchased this bottle at Colonial Spirits in Acton, MA. They had about 3-4 different Mahr's beers.

Cloudy orange-yellow body with a huge white head that lasts. Smells of citrus, yeast and bananas. The first thing I notice in the flavor is that it is a bit more fruity than I expected. Not overpowering in anyway though. Every effervesant with tons of bubbles going everywhere. Taste is citrus with a touch of tart. Very smooth.

A good beer I will come back to. Especially next summer.

Presentation: 16.9 oz long slender Euro style brown bottle, a bottled on date on the back label. Thin layer of brown sediment on the bottom of the bottle stay compacted while pouring.

Appearance: Clouded beige with a fluffy bubbly white head, good retention.

Smell: Yeasty with earthy overtones, spicy with aromas of black pepper and clove. Twang of fermented wheat on the nose also.

Taste: Firm medium body with quite an effervescent carbonation, both spiciness and a nutty yeast are intertwined with flavours of cracker and clove. Hops are minimal though show a splash of bitterness, fruity of vague lemon and apple. Mild esters from a light alcohol note start to warm things up. Big wheat malt character with a healthy balancing twang and a drawn-out grainy dryness. More rustic yeast flavours in the end with left over spicy clove flavour to make a decent semi-dry finish.

Notes: In the raw with very rustic flavours, this seems more like an old world wheat beer that is unadulterated what so ever.

I tried a bottle of this at the Mahrs pub in Bamberg. A cloudy Bier mit yeasties, it is a deep golden color. Head is white and starts at about 2", yet it shrinks down fast, still leaving nice lacework. Aroma is verrry nice, with a healthy mix of clove, banana and yeasty spiciness. Mmmmm! It has a welcome smoothness on the tongue, even with the plentiful Hefeweizen carbonation. Body is in the medium range of things. Lots of banana in the flavor, with clove present but playing second fiddle.. It is wheaty and crisp, with the banana and yeast flavors lingering well into the quaff. A real nice Bier! Zum Wohl!!
