Pours a light fluffy 1 finger head that fades at a med pace, light soapy lacing, crystal clear golden honey colored.

Nose is reminiscent of a great German brau or Oktoberfest even, nice soft lager aromas, light straw and grainy malts, little mineral note, juicy malt mash, light grassy hop note.

Taste is more of the same, soft juicy lager malt, with little toasty note and straw, mostly just soft light airy malts, layered decoction mash flavours. Nice lager flavours, soft minerals, crisp juicy lager, etc, with some grassy floral hops kicking in and decent bitterness. Finish us soft and crisp, light lingering bitter grassy hop bite, faint straw malt and lager minerals.

Mouth is lighter bod, soft and crisp lager, decent carb.

Overall great brau, very light refreshing and crisp and soft, nice hop presence, nice soft malt, good lagering and decoction, just a nice enjoyable well done German brau.

Mahr’s Bräu Mastodon has a thick, unusually fizzy, off-white head, a very hazy (which becomes murky, when the sediment is swished & poured in), gold-orange appearance, and lace curtain left behind. The aroma is of sharp, sweet & sour bread, yeast, and a grass of some sort. Taste is of those elements, with a low-level, balancing bitterness, weeds, red soil, and cream. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and chewy, and this beer finishes a bit cloying and full. Overall, it is a sipper and surely not a gulper. One would be hard pressed to session this lager.

No label information. Mahr's Mastodon is brewed in the style of a German Zwickl-Kellerbier. A limited-run collaboration beer between the American band Mastodon and Mahr's Bräu in Germany. Available in 1 Pt, 9 Fl Oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 1 Pt, 9 Fl Oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 54º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Gusher! Beware! Pours a crisp foamy head of a golden-white head over a golden amber body. Dark speckled sediment riddles the brew, carbonation is spritely and plentiful. Retention is average, lacing is very light and leaves no trace. 3

(Smell) Bready German malts with peppery, herbal hop profile that has a modest bitterness. Hints of white grape, lemon and grain add a touch of complexity, potential flavor components of the yeast. Potency is medium. 3.5

(Taste) A bit cleaner than the aroma suggests, with clean biscuit malt body with a touch of bready sweetness underneath. Hops are less pronounced, with a slight peppery flavor and some light bitterness. A bold fruit note of grape rounds out the flavor and lingers on the finish. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is soft, clean, mildly chewy. Carbonation is moderately brisk for a frothy crisp mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly sweet over bitter. Alcohol presence is light, off characters are minimal. 3.5

(Overall) A fairly enjoyable beer with nothing over-the-top, expect a solid, flavorful malt profile with a hearty dose of yeast-like fruitiness and a soft, mildly sweet finish. Comes through clean and enjoyable. 3.75

Poured on tap into a becher glass at Churchkey DC.

A real supper creamy one finger head presented, nice and solid and ultrafine. Deep uniform orange amber and apricot colored body, with some lemon lighter hues along the sides. Beer has a little bit of fine carbonation, and laces with nitro like sheets and rings all along the glass. A mighty fine looking brew.

The nose though disappoints in comparison. Very closed and subtle dough malt body slightly, but a bit hard to detect.

Palate comes with a real nice chewy body. Mid palate fills with soft baked bread, and some sweet bakery yeast like flavors. Creamy and dense body, which coats everywhere in the palate. Subtle flavors that hit nicely.

A good solid keller that just seems to be fairly basic and enjoyable. Real easy drinking to match.

Pours a deep amber-orange color. It's somewhat hazy, maybe medium hazy, not that "medium hazy" really means anything to anyone besides me. The head is a touch yellow. It puffs up big and pretty thick but fades away after a minute, a bit like a hefe. The aroma is malty and pleasant. Nice doughy malt flavor with a touch of caramel. Reminds me of the Cismontane single malt beers that I've been working through. The taste has a good dose of malt sweetness, though it still finishes fairly clean with a very light grassy note. It's a relatively rich German lager. Less hoppy than expected. Smooth feel, full for the strength. Solid beer. Easy to drink and satisfying. Not terribly dramatic but the malt flavor is very nice.

Bottle from Beermongers. It's been so long since I've had a kellerbier.

A mildly hazy copper with a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and nice lacing, this beer looks good. The nose is the classic German lager in the Munich vein. Doughy, bready, honeyed Munich malt, along with a moderate earthy, leafy, hoppy aroma and bitterness present. A moderate fruit character is present as well, a little bit of pear. I have a feeling this is a shade old as there's a mild oxidized honey note as well.

The palate opens highly carbonated, lending a yeasty, frothy, mildly eggy flavor. The malt is dusty, doughy, mildly caramelized and mildly oxidized. The oxidized note is making me wonder if this is an old batch - that's quite possible, especially since it's been what, two years The Hunter was released? The mid-palate's flabby, mildly oxidized, dull and a little lifeless. Adding the yeast does improve the feel some, but this is still a disappointment. Medium light in body with an extremely high level of carbonation, this beer finishes mildly sweet with a faint hop bitterness. Gripes aside, the Munich malt character is awesome and thoroughly enjoyable.
