The last time I visited Mahrs Brau was with my wife, kids, and my wife's Aunt and Uncle.
You enter a long hall with narrow planks on the wall to set your beer on. There is a window on your right to purchase 1/2L beers from the bar and a door on the right to enter the restaurant area. When you enter the restaurant, the bar is on the right, and on the left is the Stammstich table with a green Kachelofen behind. There are long tables along the walls, with a smaller room and more tables in the back. Many historical pictures on the walls.

We went there for lunch, and had a wonderful meal. The adults had the Schweinhax'n, while the kids had bratwurst. We also had the Weissbier and Keller bier. Each was very good.

In the past I have had the lunch special, the Sauerbraten I recall being very good. One particular visit, I ask my waiter if she would sell me the krug I had just drank my Keller bier from. She seemed more than happy to clean it up and sold it to me for 3 or 4 euro. I still have it sitting at the top of my German Krug collection.

My favorite Bamberg brewery.

It doesn't receive the tourist traffic that Schlenkerla received, but the walk was reasonable enough for my curiosity. Turned out to be a very curious trip indeed; the nearby Brauerei Keesmann has a problem working Sunday, so Mahrs got the visit by default. The outdoor biergarten was full of people and life, so I headed inside in search of a seat. There's a window which takes orders at the bar from outside, but being inside you just need to get the barman's attention.

There was no beer menu, so everything was oral. Only two beers were on-tap (helles and kellerbier), however it did have a number of bottled options. After a long walk, I was pleasantly refreshed with a half-liter of their helles, and more refreshed to find how inexpensive it was (€2ish for 500 ml of helles). You can even watch them tap your beer out of the wooden barrel, which was a first for me. At the time, I was dissapointed that only two beers were on-tap, but now I regret that I didn't stay longer.

This delightful brewpub is off the beaten path, far from the other Bamberg must-sees. It's worth it though, Mahrs is one of my favorite lager brewers anywhere. I dragged a coworker along for the long walk and we arrived hungry and thirsty.

It's a small place, especially on a cold day when sitting outside is not an option. The tables are set up such that 2 people entering will most likely share a table with others (no problem, although it was families and we all kept to our own groups conversationally). The unfiltered lager is what you'll want, although maybe there's a special offering at other times of the year which could take precedent. Anyway the unfiltered lager was delicious and cheap. The food was likewise delicious and cheap. We had the pork schnitzel and pork knuckle, each of us paid <10 euros for the food (GOOD DEAL).

If you've come to Bamberg as a beer geek you likely are searching out rauchbier. I strongly encourage a stop here anyway, but I also understand if it takes a backseat to Schlenkerla and Spezial.

Mahr’s is one of the most unique looking of the Bamberg brewpubs because it has a large courtyard biergarten in front of the brewery itself. Both times I arrived to find that area relatively full, so it’s clearly the choice spot. The front entrance leads to the standard hallway, although the hallway in this case seems to lead to an alley and the neighborhood behind the brewery. The indoor sitting area is much smaller than most other places, although there appeared to be a side door leading to additional sitting space.
I didn’t see a lot of people eating here, so I take it that Mahr’s is more of a drinking spot than a dinner destination. That’s understandable because their beers are all terrific. They might be the overall best brewer in town. When I was there, I saw taps for a helles and ungespundetes (kellerbier – the best I’ve had to date), with weizen available in bottles. They also also have a pils and a whole host of seasonals including a maibock I barely missed.
Drop into Mahr’s for a slightly different look and feel and for arguably the best beers in Bamberg. Prices were the standard 2.30-2.50, so they won’t break the bank, too.

EDIT: More and more I believe Mahr's to be the brightest star in a town filled with excellent beers. Their whole line-up is absolutely wonderful and you can't go wrong with anything. Recently we're been getting more beers from them where I live, and they're just flat-out amazing. I only had 3 different beers from them in Bamberg since my trip was short, but next time I think I'm going to camp out there for a day.
While I'm partial to some of the regional brewers around Munich (Andechs, Aying, Weihenstephaner, etc.) Mahr's is every bit as good as they are and maybe better in some ways!

If you are in Bamburg swing by Mahrs, very much a local watering hole. Off the beaten path, but very friendly. We did not get food there as we were just passing through. Visiting the Biergarten was great. We had a few dunkel bier and some snacks, Landjäger smuggled in from Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The weisen was also quite good. A great place to take a break and sit back. Bamburg is a great place to drink beer. This was one of many local places to visit there.

We did manager to bring home a ETA, which was great big dark beer. Well worth the visit!

This place felt like it was a converted house, with multiple living rooms and dining rooms converted into cozy publike atmosphere with long dark tables and benches for relaxed imbibery. The quality of the beer was very high, fantastic dunkels and helles. They did not have a rauchbier available, although that is what bamberg is known for, but the quality of their brews was so high that it didn't matter to me. The food and the beer was very inexpensive and the food was quality, but not the best that we had as it was a tad salty for our tastes.

A dark bar, with huge wood beams in the low ceiling. Small traditional green tiled oven (heater), which they were using when I visited in March. The decorations are old pictures instead of the traditional dead animals, and a 1920's radio in one corner. There are two smallish rooms, with some people at most tables but plenty of space when I visited on a weekday lunchtime. They had self service pretzels on a stick above the bar, and a kitchen open. The man I shared a table with was supplementing his meal from the kitchen with bread, pickels, and more meat from his bag. In the hallway there are some standing spots and a window to the taps, and many people chose to stand out here and talk, even though there was plenty of space to sit. I was the only tourist, but still felt welcome here. Great atmosphere, great beer. If they used wooden casks this would be heaven. One of the best spots in Bamburg, and definitely worth seeking out.
