On draught at Scotty's Beachside BBQ, served in a large chalice, Kaua'i Golden Ale is a spritzy, pale yellow with a tight, small white skim leaving light, scattered lace.

Smell is faint, sweetish, with light herbal hops.

Taste is also light, a bit of grassy hops and graininess.

Mouthfeel has is on the crisp side, light-bodied.

Drinkability is fine since it's a thin, light beer, but nothing worth revisiting. I only had one the 10 days I was in Kaua'i.

My pour get me a huge off-white head that looked like a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream on top of the beer. It slowly fell away, leaving a rocky, pocket finger of head and a good bit of lacing. Nose gave me an unusual spicy scent. Color was a bright gold with NE-quality clarity. Mouthfeel was medium with a minty taste on the tongue. Finish had a soft hops bite. A really good beer that I now wish that I had more of. Mahalo!

According to to the brewery web site, this beer is no longer called Keoki Gold. It's now (as of April 2009, at least) known as Kaua'i Golden Ale.

http://hawaiinuibrewing.com/

Web site describes it thusly:

"Light-bodied, all-malt Golden Ale with sophisticated bitterness balanced by a delicate citrus finish. Small-batch brewed with two-row wheat and caramel malts. Our proprietary blend of hops adds a tropical note."

Contradicts the current BA style assignment of "American Adjunct Lager."

Regardless, this is a below-average craft beer. Huge white head, not dense at all, highly varied bubble size. Light straw color. Grainy aroma that exactly matches the grainy taste and grainy texture. Tastes more like the "American Adjunct Lager" that BA currently incorrectly classifies this as than any sort of "Golden Lager." Watery, thin, macro-like. Missable.

Formerly called "Kaua'i Gold".

Pours a golden/orange. Minimal carbonation rising but bubbles stuck to side of the glass. No head.

Aroma is light hops, malt, and grainy.

Taste is of light hops, sweet malts, grainy. Some apricot and walnuts. Quite light flavor.

Mouthfeel is light bodied and dry.

Overall, it is rather drinkable, but nothing too great or too bad.

Pours a yellow gold. Big white foam head.

Smells faintly of grass ... maybe a bit of malt ... not much aroma, really. Taste has some malt, some grassy hops, some weird vegetable content.

Fairly forgettable, overall, and somewhat watery. Not a bad beer, though.

Bought at a general store for around two dollars somewhere in South Kihei while in Maui three weeks ago, reviewed from notes, poured into an old mug

A-Golden yellow color, big foamy white head that was probably about 3/4 inch, not much retention, no lacing
S-Grains, hoppiness, a slight hint of lemon, and pretty strong barley, pretty weak overall
T-Started off tasting like a highly carbonated water, then some malt kicked in the middle, kind of a dry finish with the small amount of hops, did not change much, could use some more malt or hops, just too bland but balanced for what it had
M-Lots of carbonation, lively and crisp mouthfeel, body is closer to medium than thin, taste goes away quickly
D-ABV seemed low, probably around four to five percent, light on the stomach, goes down easy, smooth

Never heard of this brewery prior to arriving here, saw this on tap quite a bit too, not bad for a macro and more flavorful than other beers of its kind, would not drink again, might be worth trying

Picked up a bomber in the local Foodland in Kauai.

Beer poured gold as advertised wirh a white head. Nose is not much, hints of malted barley. Taste starts crisp and refreshing but finishes uneven. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with no other redeeming characteristics. Overall drinkability is average, it is a pretty uneven beer.

The bottle I have says "Keoki Gold" and is listed as a golden ale on the brewer's website.

Pale golden color with a compact 1/4" head. Lots of visible carbonation, some spindly lace appears around the edges. Faint aroma of grape without being sweet.

Light flavors of mildly grassy/vegetal hops, a hint of dry crackery malt, with a fairly dry and bitter finish. Body is very light and practically vanishes on the palate. This would be an excellent thirst quencher on the beach in Hawaii...

Pours with an large white frothy head, deep gold clear color. Pepper and fruit in the aroma, not bad. Taste is dry and sweet, not bad, actually pretty decent. I likee it better than the average big island brew. Not quite as good as Keoki's Kaua'I Sunset offering.

01/12/08- Had on tap at a local restaurant in Kauai.

Presentation- Via the tap into a standard pint glass.

Appearance- Deep golden pour with a minor 1/4 inch head, but nice lace sheeting left behind.

Smell- Your typical macro scent. Some grain and maybe a wee bit of corn. No hops to speak of and a touch of wet cardboard.

Taste- Hmm, not as much corn, in fact mostly grain. Also, do I taste wheat? An American Macro Wheat? Still very blah tasting, but the wheat type of flavor makes it a bit more interesting.

Mouthfeel- Slightly dry with an average carbonation level.

Drinkability- For a macro, it's fairly decent, overall, not so great.

A golden pale yellow color. Decent head, but was gone quickly. Nice overall smell, but had traces of a corn malt smell. I was a little dissapointed with the taste after the smell was so appealling. Kind of a sharp mouthfeel. Cool kick in my cheek. I would say not a great beer by any means, but a good everyday drinker.

Appearance: Yellow, lively, big foamy head, no lacing. Looks very much like an American lager.
Smell: grain alcohol. Yep, its american.
Taste: Very refreshing. Bitter. Not too complex. No tricks up its slightly-metallic-sleeve.
Mouthfeel:Very carbonated, almost overpowers the flavor.
Drinkability: Pretty drinkable.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Poured a clear gold with a good inch of frothy white head. Good retention but next-to-no lacing. Pleasant aroma -- honey malts, mild hops -- but subtle. Tastes delicious -- mostly sweet & floral, but with hints of grassy & earthy flavors as well. Light body, good carbonation; this beer goes down easy -- I demolished a sixer in an afternoon and wish I'd brought some back from Kauai, as it's hard to find on Oahu... Recommended.

btw, as it's listed as a "golden ale" on the website, I'm going to put in a request to BA to re-categorize it.

22 oz bomber into pint glass. A: Clear gold, good amount of lacing, head that goes away pretty fast. S: Sweet malt, a small amount of grassy hops. T: Pretty thin up front, but the hops come in nicely with some solid citrus character and a hint of tropical fruit. The finish is long and dry. M: Moderate carbonation, a bit thin. D: A really nice lager for what it is. Nothing profound but I swam through this bomber pretty swiftly. Would definitely get it again if I saw it.

Now called “Keoki Gold” and it sure seems to be a Blonde Ale or an All-Malt lager…

Clear gold in hue, there is a very slight amber highlight to the liquid. I like the fact there is some color depth here, sure, it is leaning towards boring but I’ve seen much worse. The head was white in color; at the apex the foamy mass was a half-finger in height. It didn’t move much, in other words, this beer had good head retention. There wasn’t much subsequent lacing. Still, this beer looks adequate, nothing special but there isn’t anything unsightly either.

There is a tickle of hops in the nose. Juicy hops to boot! I’m surprised. It doesn’t smell like an Adjunct Lager (as listed on BA), this is not like High Life or PBR. First of all, this has a better malty aroma; I detect hints of toasty caramel, husk, and honey. Plus the hops offer a weak but noticeable piney-earthy hop vibe. Minimal citrus zest. The nose is not Pils-like but it isn’t BMC-ish either. I think this beer is all-malt. Mild potency. Minimal articulation yet I’d call the nose, “nice.” Engaging.

The palate is agreeable, even at a warmer serving temperature than what an Old Style would be tasty (okay, I mean tolerable) at. The maltiness shines in this beer; there is a lovely honey-caramel flavor from start to finish. Lightly toasty grains and bread is also in play. The hops do provide some bitterness and some woody-piney-citrus zesty sensations that play very well with the malt. The palate is simple but it is very satisfying. In fact, if this beer was a local and reasonably priced this would be a great drinking beer. Something for a poker game or BBQ. I really like this. Crisp, bitter aftertaste with a lingering caramel sweetness that doesn’t let me forget that I just swallowed. Nice, very nice.

Medium/medium-light in body, moderately low carbonation, the mouthfeel fits this beer very well. There is nothing groundbreaking here but it works. Works well.

This beer is very drinkable. I am sailing through my bomber. Tasty. Simple. Likable. I wish I had more. I bet this beer would kick ass on a warm summer day, especially sitting on a Hawaiian beach! I enjoyed my bottle in lovely Bellevue, Nebraska thanks to my Uncle Rick and Aunt Kathy. Thanks for the beer!

Back from my trip to the islands with reviews, of course.

On tap at Whaler’s Brewpub (that hasn’t brewed their own beer in almost a year…)

Light golden appearance (as the name would indicate). Clear. Small head with very small tight bubbles. Creamy appearance and taste in the head, but was told it is not a nitrogen tap, just CO2. Nice fruity aroma. Taste is lightly sweet and malty with a hint of the fruit from the aroma. Crisp, bitter aftertaste. Considering the climate, this was a solid beer. Well balanced with enough going on to keep you interested, but light enough to really enjoy on a hot Kauai’i day.

Color is deep yellowish amber with a white foamy head about a finger high. Smells of light hop and some maltyness. Taste is pretty clean and smooth with a good balance of hop and malt and is slightly sweet. Body is light to medium with a small hop sweetness covering the mouth. Drinkable, sure, but could be much better.
