Appearance: Clear deep amber in color, with a large, somewhat coarse off-white head, which retains well. The carbonation is moderate and slow-rising, the lacing is scattered and patchy.
Aroma: Profound aroma of toasted brown bread and caramel, and a mild spicy hop character.
Taste: Opens with robust dark malt flavors, soon followed by lesser flavors of caramel and molasses. Toasted malt flavors dominate throughout the taste, with the caramel and molasses flavors contributing a mild sweetness. Finishes with a lingering, mild and slightly spicy hop flavor and lingering toasted grain flavors.
Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, pleasant, and full.
Drinkability/notes: Really excellent and very drinkable, a very nice example of the style. Considering the typical price ($6.99 to $8.49 for a six-pack) in my area, Texas, Alaskan Amber seems a bargain.
Presentation: Packaged in a short twelve-ounce brown glass bottle with a pry-off crown, served n a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
Serving type: bottle
