Our Hop Turn IPA also takes its inspiration from Europe – using a Pilsner malt for a distinctive old-world taste. With a floral, peppery, lemony aroma, crystal-clear pale straw color, brisk flavor and lively 7.5 percent ABV, Hop Turn is a radical take on an American IPA.

This was a fun one to try while a tourist up in the great Alaskan frontier. A nicely hopped but lightly bitter brew.

From notes taken a while ago:

Rich golden yellow to orange honey, depending on where viewed in glass an lighting. Extreme chunky haze, mostly opaque. Lemon-white heavy, rocky foam head with great retention and fair lacing. Grassy-sweet, with orange juice, citrus rind, somewhat metallic, and a little fresh-baked bread to smell. All of that on the palate, except with citrus and other tropical fruit to the front, and piney, herbal, and soapy hops taking the place of the latter two. A bit too much going on and out of balance for my tastes. Which is not atypical for a bigger IPA, although I’ve had 100+ IBU beers that were nearly perfect. It’s mainly perfumey and soapy hops I don’t care for too much (maybe it’s the same thing going on with my general distaste for most actual perfumes and soaps, stuff makes my eyes burn and my nose run). Unfortunately, that’s what you usually get with these otherwise amazingly fruity IPAs. Give me pine sap or dank and brothy vegetable stew any old day. Still, I can appreciate it for its complexity, and a quite peppery retro-olfaction somewhat redeems it. Full-bodied, fine and prickly to creamy suds, astringency to match its bitterness, heat to match the sweetness.

not sure why i thought this was going to be a belgian ipa, there is very little yeast character to it at all, must have had my information backwards. the beer is not all that distinct as strong ipa goes, but its very fresh and tasty, and very alaskan. in some ways it reminds me a lot of their other hoppy beer, less bitter, more crisp, a little oily, and with a lot of the fruitiness and citrusy hop elements coming on more in the middle than towards the finish. its crystal clear and orangey, nice to look at, and there is a light sweetness to the nose that seems equal parts hop oils and residual malt sugar. the hops are not quite bold enough for this strength and sweetness level, although i like the balance. its almost like an imperial american pale ale or something, with lots of body but more of a balanced hop complexion. easy drinking though for what it is, and crisp in the finish for how sweet it starts. i could see this being a lit better as the snow melts in early spring than it is this time of year, i think thats when it was released anyway. its held up very well since then though, and i liked this a lot. glad they put it in a bottle.

Bottle from Boise Co-op. Pours out with a nice off white frothy head. Sweet aroma, mild citrus notes. Taste follows the sweet notes, some grapefruit tartness, mild soapy notes. Medium weight, slick. Sweetness lingers.

I picked up a bottle of Alaskan's Hop Turn for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. I'm in the mood for something hoppy and I'm interested to see how this one turns out, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a IPA glass.

A- The label is nice, it goes with the name and it's a little eye catching. It poured a hazy orange and amber color that took on more of an amber color when held to the light with just about a fingers worth of bubbly off white head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left some nice patchy lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a lower amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they are a little on the light side and they impart a mixture of fruity, floral and green hop aromas with no single aspect sticking out the most. Up next comes a little bit of doughy yeast which leads into the malts which impart a nice bready, bread crust, biscuit, pale malt and slight caramel malt like aroma. This beer had a nice aroma, but I wish the hops stuck out more.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts off with a slightly lower amount of medium sweetness with the hops still being the first to show up and they impart a unique mixture of citrus, candy like, floral, green hops and spicy hops that come together to make a unique flavor, but the hops are still on a little of the lighter side for the style. Up next comes that doughy yeast which leads right into the malts which impart the same malty aspects that I got int he aroma with the bready aspects sticking out the most. On the finish there's a slightly higher amount of low bitterness with those hop flavors lingering in the aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, the hop profile is a little unique, but I wish the hops were a little more intense.

M- Smooth, a little crisp, medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and I thought it was a solid example of an IPA, for the most part it was pretty true to style and I liked that the hop profile was a little unique, but I couldn't help notice that the hops were a little lighter than they should be in an IPA. This beer had nice drinkability, I could drink two, but I would get bored with it after that. What I like the most about this beer is the mouthfeel, it's good and it works well with this beer. What I like the least about this beer is that the hops didn't impart a little more flavor and bitterness. I don;t think I would buy this again, bit I wouldn't turn one down, it's not a must try, but if you like your IPA's a little on the lighter side it's worth checking out. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't love it and I think if the hops were turned up another notch it was be a pretty good IPA. It's not a favorite Alaskan Brewing beer and it's a little above average for the style. Nice job guys, this is a solid IPA.

Bought a single bottle, drank from a snifter.

Look: clear golden color, very thin white head, light lacing
Smell: citrus, tropical fruit, hint of caramel malt
Taste: juicy fruit flavors- mostly citrus, faint tropical notes as well. not a ton of hop flavor or bitterness; tastes good, but doesn't really fit the style.
Feel: lightly carbonated, medium body, smooth. very easy to drink.

Overall: good beer. I'd drink again.
