A winter ale that reminds me of tangerines. Nice.
The color correlates well to the flavor, for it pours an orangey-amber color. The scent is rather floral, which probably is attributed to the spruce tips that are used during the brewing process.
Overall, there is a wonderful citrus flavor that has a candy sweetness. As the ale goes down, I pick up on specific floral notes of ylang-ylang/jasmine...very much a perfumed drink. As it finishes, I must say...this is actually a more light and delicate brew than expected. It does have a slight gesture of "heaviness", but that quickly dissipates in the mouth and it actually has a refreshing quality to it. As I drink away, it certainly doesn't seem like it has an alcohol content that is over 6%. This could be dangerous.
I have to say that Alaskan Winter Ale is a rather unusual creature in relation to the typical "roasty and rich" seasonal ales. For that, I have to give the Alaskan Brewing Co. a big thumbs up for their imaginative efforts. It's a welcomed departure.
