Notes/Commercial Description:
Alaskan IPA is honey gold in color with a fruity, citrus aroma. An enticing blend of hops and our dry hopping process, in which hops are added directly to tanks during fermentation, give this brew a very intense, complex aromatic character with a refreshing hop finish.

From a 22 oz. brown bomber. Pours a clear vibrant golden hue, tall massive frothy and chunky white head with great retention and consistent thick slashes of lacing.

Intense Cascade hops on the nose, soapy pine, sweet flowers, tangerine and grapefruit citrus. Very faint biscuit malt in the background.

Predominantly hops throughout the flavour, floral and citrus at first, more sticky and pine melded with puckering white grapefruit rind on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, soapy smooth yet sticky on the finish, some alcohol burn.

A solid decent run-of-the-mill IPA, one-dimensional with the expected hop whollap, but it delivers the goods you bought the ticket to ride for in the first place.

Alaskan IPA has a light golden appearance and is very, very clear. Copious small carbonation bubbles rush upward through the beer. The head is nearly pure-white and is about a finger tall after a strong pour into a pint glass. The lacing is arch-like and sticky.

The aroma is not very potent and smells rather light and grainy. There is a subtly citrus and mint hop presence which is balanced by slight caramel and biscuit malt aroma. Pleasant, but not very strong.

I am slightly more impressed by the taste than by the smell. There is a decent balance of caramel and pale malts and not-too-bitter citrus hops. Light notes of grapefruit, orange rind, and mint come through near the end, and the finish is light and bitter from the bittering hops.

The mouthfeel is definitely on the lighter side for the style, but has a nice effervescence to it from the carbonation. The hops provide a nice little nip on the sides of my palate and the finish has just a slightly bitter, clean hop presence.

I think this has more in common with APAs that I've had than AIPAs. Everything about the beer was just a little lighter and subdued than I usually like from an IPA. Solid beer, but perhaps just a little too subtle for the style.

Poured from a 12oz bottle

Typical color, pale golden.

The nose is flowery and earthy hops with peachy, fruity undertones. It's not very pungent, almost hard to smell.

It tastes more like an English style to me with more earthy flavors and a quick finish that's not very bitter or flavorful.

It's easy to drink, but the flavors don't really make me want to drink more. It's just too light all around and might go better with food.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine May 2007.

This brand had a short "keg only" showing last summer, but beer enthusiasts cried out for more. Alaskan appeased the thirsty crowd with their IPA, now bottled year-round.

Drops into the glass with a short stack of foam that subsides to a very sticky yet thin lace. A tad hazed within the dim golden-colored brew. Evergreen, hemp and lemon zest hop aromas attack the nose (in a loving way).

No lack of smoothness here--the moderate body holds onto a light carbonation that lends a dash of crispness to the mouthfeel. Big healthy herbal, hemp seed, blond tobacco and ruby red grapefruit hop flavors jump up first. Hop bitterness is not shy, with a resin burn that does not seem to want to go away. Malt sweetness and bread flavors are only underlying flavors. Finishes bitter but fresh, with a long lingering hop flavor in the dryness.

Drinkability scores high, which is great, but remember this beer is 6.2 percent ABV. Spot-on for the style and a hophead's dream. A half-dozen Northwest oysters per bottle is a must--Barron Point, Penn Cove and Willapa Bay would all be especially delicious with this.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear golden yellow with a big rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is mild spicy and grassy hops with some sweet slightly vegetal malts.

The flavor is some sweet malts with a earthy, grassy hop finish that has some decent bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some sharp carbonation.

Overall, a pretty average IPA. I didn't really care for the flavor profile. I prefer brighter fruitier hops.

12 ounce bottle w/o freshness info. Pours slightly hazed, lighter amber, almost golden. Off white head, tiny bubbles and leaving spotty light lacing. Nice fresh, fruity (I get mostly grapefruit) and grainy hop nose. Quite respectable West coast IPA. Fresh, citric hops go down easy. Not a palate wrecker, but a better then average and enjoyable hoppy ale. Worth a try.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is biscuit malt with some nice orange citrus and tropical fruit notes. The flavor has a decent amount of bitterness with some orange citrus and a touch of pine. There is also a hint of biscuit and toffee malt, but the hops are far more present than the malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not a great IPA, but a nice drinker that won't disappoint.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. Best by date of July 23, 2011.

Appearance: Clear, light gold without much head and no lacing. Looks a little too lager-like.

Smell: Tangerine, with light grapefruit and tropical notes. Some toasted malts.

Taste: Dry, toasted malt backbone with borderline tart grapefruit and tangerine co-mingling. Finish is slightly bitter and spicy, but fairly light overall for an IPA.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, light to medium body with a very dry finish. A little lighter than I prefer but the tart-like dryness is great.

Overall: Very nice everyday IPA. Not too bold on flavor, but what is present is quite enjoyable.

Clear gold pour with a wall of bubbles for a head. Nice release of citrus hops, with some pine and soap. Bit more soap in the taste, but that turns quickly into buttery hops and toasty malt. Not bad, but not nearly as good as others more easily available.

Poured form the tap, this beer had a dark amber colour to it with minimal head. The smell was like any other IPA, very hoppy upfront with a slight citrus nose. The taste is what surprised me the most; it wasn't nearly as hoppy as usual IPAs. This IPA concentrated much more on the hop-flavour rather than hop-bitterness. I usually don't go for IPAs, but this one is great.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely.

Bottle (2011)

Glowing deep orange. Thick white head. Decent lacing.

Hoppy aroma without beating you over the head. Some citrus elements, particularly in the form of grapefruit and lemon.

A relatively bitter IPA. Incredibly drinkable. Obvious malt backbone but a hop-centered and bitter focused beer. Delicious.

A rich, medium to thick mouthfeel, plenty of carbonation. Very nice.

A delicious, tasty, and incredibly drinkable IPA.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of white head that slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing.

Smell: A juicy and earthy hop forward aroma with hints of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront citrus hops with hints of orange peel, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon, and tangerine. Big scent of pine resin. Also some grassy hop hints. Soft pale malt background with hints of grains, cracker, and yeast. Very hop forward and ripe smelling. Pretty solid.

Taste: Like it smells, a ripe and juicy hop driven taste with good notes of citrus and pine. Citrus hops with some upfront notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, pineapple, and tangerine. Big taste of piney hops. Earthy notes of pine resin. Soft bready malt background presence with notes of grains, cracker, and yeast. Very hop dominate and pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, slightly oily, and pretty drying on the finish. Nicely smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid IPA. Good pine and citrus bite with a balanced smooth body.

A yellow ipa, tiny bubbles leave behind a low amount of lace that dissipates quickly. Aroma is not hop pungent.

Taste, light, refreshing and hoppy. A distinct crispness on tap v. bottles I've had (and I've had a lot of them). Nothing real adventurous here, you get a standard west coast hop level for a year round release single ipa, with a little less than average heft with it.

Good price on this stuff helps drinkability.

pale golden copper hue with a bright wite head fine even lacing. Aroma has hints of citrus/floral notes. A biscuit doughy center in the nose really stands out. Flavor wise sharp piercing bitterness really brings out citrus/floral notes more pale biscuit semi sweet malt tones, pretty hop sided but that's okay. Not brilliant but I'd imagine hops are a tough comodity in Alaska. Unliked Smoked salmon and malts. Mouthfeel is sturdily carbonated with a light to medium bodied. Drinkabiliy overall is solid an approachable early IPA that I would definitely swing for especially on tap.
