Notes/Commercial Description:
Alaskan Barley Wine is a full bodied ale, deep mahogany in color and brewed with an array of complementing malts to achieve its high original gravity. Multiple hop additions in the boil and dry hopping during fermentation provide contrast to the big malt character resulting in the smooth balance that distinguishes this specialty brew. Like many fine wines, Alaskan Barley Wine may be aged in the bottle and gains deeper malt complexity and smoothness over time.

A - Pours a reddish brown. The bottom of the glass starts to let some amber creep in. The tan head is minimal - topping out at an eighth of an inch. It sticks around for a couple minutes and eventually recedes to a cap that barely covers the top of the brew. It's just dark enough to make it hard to see the active carbonation but it's there, trust me. Solid amounts of lace line the glass in delicate rings.

S - Starts out with a little oxidation and piney hops but they fade quickly. What follows is nothing short of amazing. Full aromas of caramel and toffee are showcased throughout this beer. Everything else just seems to bring those aromas forward or serve as a nice back drop to them at any rate. Some bread come in about midway. Alcohol is noted and keeps it all nice and warm. Heavy dose of fig on the end along with a touch of raisin.

T - Very nice. Hops aren't quite so noticeable in the flavor. What I am getting is mostly pine with a small amount of grapefruit. Overall, this one is big and sweet with a nice bit of heat. Starts with fig and plum. Lots of caramel and toffee in the flavor as well. I'm picking up a smoother layer of butterscotch that comes and goes. Kind of finishes off with a little toastiness and a healthy amount of heat. There is also a tea flavor that's only present every now and then.

M - Full bodied with a light carbonation level. Finish is sweet and hot.

D - Drinkability is good given the fact that this is such a big beer. It is a sipper but I have no problem working on a bottle over the course of an evening. I can't say the alcohol is well hidden but it does work well with the other robust flavors going on. Two thumbs up for Alaskan Brewing Co.'s Barley Wine. I have a feeling I'll be hunting this one down again.

22oz bottle poured into glass.

Appearance: pours a deep copper with a tan head that rapidly dissipates. Fairly transparent with a good amount of bubbling within.

Smell: lots and lots of hops. Slight amount of booze.

Taste: fairly complex: notes of hops, kind of a caramel hint, some booziness, some brown sugar. Pretty darn nice.

Mouthfeel: sticky. Hoppy aftertaste.

Overall: very happy I picked this up. Really good overall.

2010 bottle. Pours a rich deep mahogany brown with a cherry hue. Amazing head retention, great lacing, huge thick collar. Aroma is molasses, toffee, leather and earthy wood. Taste is bitter molasses, stale tobacco, vanilla and wet paper. Nice rich body and low carbonation. I believe this beer must have been left on the shelf in a high light area since 2010. It looked great, but the paper and tobacco really ruined the flavor.
