Notes / Commercial Description:
This Jalapeño Imperial IPA is fresh from the onset, with a quartet of bright hops playing off zesty jalapeño heat. A lustrous head retains the citrusy combination of Centennial, Sterling, Magnum and Apollo hops. Fresh jalapeños are used for a pleasant aroma, full-bodied flavor and genuine picante kick. A sweet bready malt backbone provides balance to the peppery fire.

Alaskan Jalapeño Imperial IPA is made from glacier-fed water, the finest quality Centennial, Sterling, Magnum, and Apollo hops, premium two-row and specialty malts, and a whole lot of fresh jalapeños.

Pours a handsome orangey amber in the Einbecker pilsner glass with a long-lasting frothy foam. Plenty of carbonation in the mouth as well, with a slick mouthfeel. The chile aroma emerges after warming up just a little and is really inviting and fragrant.

This is one of the sweetest big IPAs I have ever tasted. It seriously makes me think of jalapeño jelly. The heat is very modest and there is just a little chile flavor. Some roasted barley taste with toffee and a dark grainy flavor. Some bitterness but the hops get lost in the peppery heat which finally makes a shy appearance.

Overall this is quite drinkable, though it would be much better with less sugary taste. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at QFC Market in the Seattle University shopping center.

22oz bottle poured into the biggest glass I got.

Appearance: Pours a white head that rapidly diminishes and leaves very little lacing on the side of the glass. Lots of carbonation - vigorous bubbling. Pretty transparent, copperish color.

Smell: You definitely get the pine-sol notes of a double IPA but... yeah - definitely getting the jalapeno, but it's not as overpowering as I feared it'd be.

Taste: Maybe I'm off here, but this is really tasting like a double IPA... without pepper initially. I keep drinking this bad boy trying to get more than a very slight hint of the jalapeno, but no dice. Very odd. So, let's have this sit for a few more minutes and open up. AHA - THERE IT IS! Not overpowering, not distracting, but BINGO!! Also, the smell gets this as well. I'm glad I decided to wait a few minutes!

Mouthfeel: Very, very crisp and dry. Definitely a good mouthfeel to this one.

Overall: Until I let this open up a bit more, I was going to give this a much lower score since the pepper didn't show up right away. But... after letting this open up, it REALLY is good! Sometimes, folks, patience pays off with these unique beers.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #88 (May 2014):

Malty, Fruity, Peppery

Disclaimer: We love chile beers. Pours medium amber with a creamy. long-lasting head. Aroma is spicy, peppery, and malty. Creamy on the palate, lively carbonation, with green chili, over ripe citrus fruitiness, chalky, bitter, dry, and a lingering pepperiness. Good, but we were hoping for a more pronounced jalapeño experience and a touch of heat that should come with it; to help distinguish this beer from other Imperial IPAs.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing.

Smell: A very juicy and spicy hop forward aroma with big hints of citrus and jalapeno peppers. Upfront scent of hot and spicy jalapeno peppers. Citrus hops with juicy hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, apricot, and pineapple. Earthy hop hints of grass and pine resin. Some floral hints as well. Background malt hints of caramel, grains, cracker, and yeast. A nicely hot and juicy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy, spicy, and hot hop forward taste with big notes of citrus, pine, and jalapeno peppers. Upfront taste of spicy jalapeno peppers which are hot but not overwhelming. Citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, passion fruit, apricot, and pineapple. Earthy and herbal hop presence with notes of grass and dank pine resin. Backing sweet malt presence with notes of caramel, grains, yeast, and cracker. A very solid and interesting taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very spicy and juicy. Somewhat chewy. Finishes dry with some heat from the peppers and booze.

Overall: A pretty solid combination of a imperial IPA and Chili beer. Big citrus and pine notes with a big but not overwhelming heat from the pepper.

a: good visibility, typical IPA coloring, good/silky carbonation
s: smells like jalapeno with a hint of hops
t: interesting taste...jalapeno flavor is not overpowering and there is some of the normal IPA bitterness; tastes like a beer and not an experiment with jalapenos!
m: no heat...and that's a good thing. if i wanted heat i would drink a bottle of tabasco!
o: this is a solid effort to make a jalapeno beer. it looks like a beer and tastes like a beer. i would prefer more hoppiness in the taste with a little more subtle jalapeno flavoring. this is a good beer

Picked this up a week or two ago from the COOP... finally got up the courage tonight. Pours a crystal clear orange with a 1/2" off white head that showed good retention and splotchy lacing.

Nose is pretty big fresh jalapeno aroma.. big chili aroma pummels the hops and is sorta magnified by the residual pale malts... Doesn't really smell "hot".

Hmmmm... Interesting, better than the nose led me to believe... Citrus hops bring this into the IPA realm so does a mild tropical fruity hoppiness.. chili flavor is there, but the "heat" really doesn't translate as much as expected and I am thankful for that.

Body and carbonation seem about spot on... no flaws.

I am a pretty big pussy when it comes to chilies, but this was very approachable even for me... I actually like it quite a bit. I honestly don't see pairing it with food the way may people will; instead I see it as a nice palate challenge and appreciate it by itself.
