A - Jet black with a slight cola red tint, 1-2 fingers of creamy tan head

S - dark Roasted malts with hints of coffee, a small bit of resiny sweet citrus

T - Bittering hops hit immediately up front and linger through to the back end. Dark roasted coffee. not much citrus comes through, but pine is prevalent as well

M - Medium bodied with a slight stickiness.

O - Great Black IPA. Def on the high end of bitterness.. could maybe use a bit more flavor to go with it though

12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a big fluffy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted malts, a little chocolate and dark fruit, and piney floral hops.

The flavor is roasted, slightly acidic, malts and sweet dark fruit with some decent piney bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is fairly light bodied and watery.

Overall, a decent Black IPA. Kind of reserved, but balanced.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Near black with thick tan head and nice lacing.

Smell: Strong chocolate roasted aroma, with just a hint of citrus and pine.

Taste: Tastes like a bitter Porter, with chocolate and coffee mostly. There is a moderately high level of bitterness, but more from the roasted malt than the lightly pine-like and citrusy hops.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body, very dry finish.

Overall: Not really sure this should be called a Black IPA or even a catch-all American Black Ale. This is really a Porter with higher bitterness and some mild American-style hops. I enjoy it, but a little misleading.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a little bit of ruby red when held to light. Lots of rising bubbles and a good four fingers of light tan head with good retention. Lots of lacing around the glass.

Smell: Tropical citrus hops up front with some hints of grapefuit and pineapple. Also some piney hops. Roasted malt aroma is here but kind of subtle compared to the hops. Light hints of chocolate and coffee along with the caramel.

Taste: A fairly strong taste of hops upfront with some citrus grapefruit, pineapple, and apricot along with some pine resin. Dark roasted malts come in towards the finish with some chocolate and coffee. Roasty flavors linger in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and oily with a moderately dry finish.

Overall: A good tasting IPA. Could of been a little stronger with the dark roasty elements, but whats there tastes good.

Pours a black beer, moderate thickness, small tan head on top of it. The aroma isn't massively hoppy, it is definitely the grassy type, reminiscient of a homebrew nugget black ale, but this did a poor job of getting rid of the roasty character, which didn't allow the hops to be all on the up and up as much as I'd like.

Taste, nice, good hop bitterness, a little less roast at this point. Missing the fruity hop character that makes the best black ales shine. This one leaned a little much on simple grassy bitterness. Sometimes the dehusked black malt just doesn't get enough of the acrid bitterness out of it, and as a result, covers up a little hop flavor. Because of that, this could just as much be called an American porter. Might not have the thickness you'd want, but in the more sesssionable porters, they tend to be weaker in mouthfeel, this is just fine for style.

Appearance - Poured into my Chimay chalice, this brew poured a deep cordovan brown with a light tan, finger width head. Decent retention. Fine lacing with good stick.

Smell - Hits on citrus and pine hop while lesser notes of roasted malt, specifically a subtle mocha character, does well to round out the aroma.

Taste - Hits on citrus and pine hoppiness upfront and throughout, while the roasted malt is subtle, but firm, peaking through mid-taste and into the finish, though never quite overtakes the dominant hop character. Finishes with a lingering orange pith bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, with moderate carbonation. Utterly smooth from start to finish. Glides down with ease. A touch on the creamy side.

Overall - A very underrated CDA from Alaskan here. Personally I'd like to see a bit more of the roasted character, but this is a fine example of the style, regardless. My only gripe is that this isn't a year-round release.

12oz bottle, green solo cup.

Looks much like your standard porter or black IPA. Really nice head.

Chocolate crunch bar and chocolate malt dusted with grapefruit and orange peel. Like the chocolate oranges I used to get in my stocking.

Same thing, gentle but bitter and very tasty. Chocolate working exceptionally well with citrus.

Creamy texture, much like a porter. Medium-high carbonation.

Somehow I'm second to strike on reviews of this very good black IPA. It's simple and creamy and satisfying.

Poured almost a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is citrus with a note of roasted malt.
It has a solid flavor profile: lemon, grapefruit and slight roasted malt.
It has a crisp texture, a bit high on the carbonation.
A worthy and flavorful BIPA.

Nice head that dissipated somewhat

dark color, like a stout.

Smell and taste are more IPA, more bitter and piney than anything roasted. I guess I would like a bit more in the roasted dept, but it is good.

Nice carbonation and mouthfeel not really thick or thin.

Nice IPA for the "winter" in TX

I would buy this again, especially since they are $6.99 a sixer. I usually buy just TX stuff, but there aren't really black IPAs available in bottles/cans at this time. Bottle was dated good until late April.
