Nugget and Apollo hops added in the brew kettle provide a green, floral aroma and citrus hop base, while the later addition of Amarillo, Citra, and Centennial hops add notes of spicy grapefruit and orange - complimenting the resilient malt profile.

Deep yellow brown color. Tan head.

Didn't note the smell.

Taste is good, lots of bitterness, with some distinct sweetness simultaneously.

I'd like a bit more carbonation - I don't say this frequently.

Wears its alcohol very obviously on the finish - seems like it could be closer to 10% rather than the 8.5% listed.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #86 (Mar 2014):

Hoppy, Fruity, Dry, Deceiving

An artfully balanced DIPA that’s dangerously drinkable. That’s all you need to know, but if you’re looking for more: super smooth and creamy. Grassy, piney, leafy, minty, and fruity hops with suggestions of orange and onion. Solid pale malt sweetness and a touch of honey provide backbone and balance. But for the most part, it’s a dry beer, which highlights the hops, while the creamy mouthfeel and dryness hides the 8.5% deceivingly well. Respect this beer.

Pours a thin head on a clear dark straw body.
The aroma is a wonderful sharp citrus smell.
The taste has a great and bold lemon drop bitterness throughout. Nicely balanced though.
The texture is crisp.
Really nice.

Very impressed Alaskan Brewing! This is a keeper. Great citrus notes and interesting spice in the finish.

Sitting at my computer with a glass on my desk and I have to take a gander for a moment at the pour. Truly one of the most beautiful looking beers in a glass I have ever seen. Perfect amber color (almost red) with 1.5 finger head, with a lace that lingered throughout the entire glass.

The smell seems fairly standard- faint but still extant, smells very American with malt, caramel, hoppy sourness.

First sip you get hit with hops and strong malty/syrup flavor (shocking). More hints of caramel. I like the taste but some may think the hoppiness/maltiness is imbalanced- second, third sip seems too malty, but it's far from undrinkable.

Undoubtedly a great beer. Will surely drink it again.

On tap at Yardhouse, Saint Louis Park MN. Served in a pint glass.

A: (Lighting is tricky) Medium to dark orange, single finger of head. Laced the glass nicely. Very apparent carbonation.
S: Tropical fruits, pineapple, mangos, oranges, some grapefruit and a little pine/grass in the background
T: Follows the nose really well. Little bite of hoppy bitterness upfront but finishes nice and sweet.
M: Medium mouthfeel, lots of carbonation. Finishes up nice and dry.
O: Solid DIPA. Would definitely get again.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. The aroma is a bright, citrus sweetness with a floral grassiness. The beer is lightly hazy and amber colored with a whipped, off-white/eggshell head that has an abundant retention and a good lace. The beer is a medium high bitter with a medium sweet that's slightly more up-front bitter and a sweet finish. The beer is smooth and syrupy with a creamy carbonation and a medium body that hits the palate with toast and marmalade flavors as well as some grass. The finish is zesty and grassy with a slightly burnt note that strentghens as it warms, along with a bitter citrus that blends into the aftertaste that's floral with a sweet tangerine hint.

I've never really cared for the other hoppy offerings from Alaskan, and this one didn't really push my buttons either. Nothing "wrong" with it, just bland and soulless.

Slight piney taste. Hint of grapefruit. Similar to All Day IPA. As a double IPA, somewhat hoppy but doesn't linger too long. Very full flavored beer.

Date on bottle says 12-13-14. I wish this beer was fresher.

Poring this beer out produced a minimal white head and left a beautiful dark golden orange beer behind. Not sure if the hops are still fresh but as I breath in Hopothermia has a sweetness, candied orange, marmalade, caramel, yeast, pine, and dankness. Taste on this comes off as bitter, with a balanced sweetness. It resembles the nose when it passes my lips with: orange, citrus, candied marmalade, grapefruit pith, earthyness, and bitter dry astringency. Carbonation is spot on and it has a dry finish despite the sweet balanced initial impression. Mouth feel is slick and medium bodied which I wish was more substantial. Overall this is a great beer even though it is not as fresh as I would prefer. Still its a must try for any double IPA fan, with a nice balance approach to the style. Hope you like this one too because I sure do, cheers!

On tap, Into a snifter, at the Red Cow

A: burnished copper, 1 finger tight head
S: mainly mild inviting pine and resin, but also a little light earthy wet garden smell, some plum, some faint tangerine and orange but it isn't bright, biscuity and caramel malts
T: follows the nose, nice balance between the light bready maltiness and the earthy piney hops, that balances the bitter and sweet. Some medicinal notes on the end that add something interesting. I'm not sure everything adds up entirely well...but the different parts are nice, and it's close.
M: sticky, medium carbonation, alcohol is well hidden though there is some warmth.

Overall: glad I tried. There are a lot of big and bold double IPAs out there; this one doesn't blow you away; it's got a lot of virtues, but to really sing it needs a bit more integration and harmonizing. Will do it again.

Best by date is 013115 (to left of barcode on label) Clear rich amber with one finger white head. Lacing is good. Smell is floral fruity tropical with light pine and bready malts.
Taste is fruits such as mango orange some peach. The bitterness begins to take over with a pine resin aspect. Interesting how the hop character grows and gives in to the big malt bill. Pretty well balanced for the style.
Mouthfeel is medium to full with less than ideal carbonation.
Overall a fine but not stellar version of the DIPA style. Very easy drinking and the hop bitterness does not peg my bitter meter. I enjoyed this very much. Happy New Year folks.

Hopothermia pours a dark golden color with a big lacing fluffy white head. There is a earthy and roasted malty aroma. The taste is more balanced, earthy flavors, some hop flavors, the warmth from the alcohol comes through. Nice body, a little flat. Overall it has some big flavors, but is very malty.

Dark amber colored beer with a tall yellowish tan colored head. Distinctly orange and it fits the color IPA Orange.

Smells very strongly of citrus hop. Mostly grapefruit with a sweet malt scent. Scents of strong tea.

Starts out sweet and slightly woody. Mild bitterness for the style. Some caramel taste but otherwise it is fairly neutral flavored.

Mouthfeel is full.

Overall a tame double IPA. Will have to try from the source someday.

Great beer, drink it regularly here in AK. Initial taste isn't as bitter as expected but leaves a strong hoppy flavor that lingers in your mouth for a while.
