Notes/Commercial Description:
Nugget and Apollo hops added in the brew kettle provide a green, floral aroma and citrus hop base, while the later addition of Amarillo, Citra, and Centennial hops add notes of spicy grapefruit and orange - complimenting the resilient malt profile.

Nugget and Apollo bittering hops as well as Amarillo, Citra, Centennial for Aroma. I had never had this beer before and was happy to find it as a single at The Four Firkins.

Aroma: Starts with a candy-like sweetness, fading to a orange and lemon zip. Some grain character and a hint of alcohol.

Appearance: Clear copper color. A huge off-white head that is very persistent and pillowy.

Flavor: There is a punch of citrus (orange rind and a bit of lemon) at first. I get sweetness and tropical fruit in the middle, not sure if that is citra hop or esters. The last 2/3 of the taste has an almost salty or burtonized flavor I associate with bitters and English IPA. The hop finish on the beer is bordering on astringent and the beer ends pretty dry. I pick up a bit of alcohol on this one as well.

Overall: This was pretty good, with more English character than expected. I wonder if they used an English yeast strain on this. The astringent finish hurt this for me a bit.

12oz bottle poured to a standard pint.

A: pours a nice, translucent amber color with about a 1 finger off white head. Leaves spotty lacing in the glass.

S: great aromas of pine/spruce, some citrus, sweet caramel, and alcohol.

T: Very well done. I get the citrus first, followed by the pine flavor. The malt is pretty sweet, but works well with the other flavors.

M: medium body, good carbonation, but not overly bubbly.

O: Very impressed with this DIPA from Alaskan. Quite tasty and drinkable.

12 oz bottle pours a mostly clear, dark gold color with a dense cap of off-white head. Excellent retention and lacing.

Nose is piney with some alcohol peeking through. malts are fairly deep with caramel and toast.

Taste is much smoother than the aroma would indicate with pine sap and toast leading the way. Alcohol more integrated and goes down smooth. Its not bad, but there are plenty of better DIPAs out there. It feels old school, with a more traditional PacNW hop schedule than many of the newer versions of this style.

Handsome amber brew with ample foam in the snifter. Sudsy and a little sharp on the tongue with hoppy acidity. Big fruity aroma of orange blossoms, lime peel, and fermenting pineapple. Some alcohol presence that gives it a mixed drink taste.

This is plenty sweet with malt. The hops are a welcome balance to all that malt. It's like orange marmalade with the bitterness finally coming across for the flavor. Mango and really sweet orange with a touch of cocktail bitters makes it even more interesting.

Another tasty Northwest DIPA. This is sweeter and fruitier, and more like a liqueur. From the 12 oz bottle bought at Special Brews in Lynnwood, Washington.
