Purchased at South Fork Deli, Cramerton, NC...

Pours a hazy deep-dark orange with a small head and minimal lacing. There's a nice balance here, in the nose and the taste - the citra provides some bittering and minimal floral notes, with musk mellon present as well. The re's a decent amount of maltiness present too. Medium body and a super dry finish. This is a very nice beer, pick some up if you find it available. I look forward to the next glass.

12 oz bottle poured into an imperial pint.
6.5% ABV

A - Raw honey golden hued, this dry-hopped edition of Hop Czar is ever-so-slightly hazed with a tall, lasting white head that leaves a loose veil of lacing on the glass.

S - Touting the name "Citra dry-hopped" it should come as no surprise that the nose is big on, you guessed it, Citra hops; their pungent aroma offering a conglomerate of citrus perfume. Lemon oil, grapefruit rind, and tropical fruit salad make for an inviting aroma laced with notes of caramel and weed.

T - While the earthy, weed like undertones of the aroma are certainly detectable, they have no amount of presence suggesting the flavor would be a huge shift from the nose, and therein lies dry-hopping. Tropical fruit and citrus are present but become an afterthought in Hop Czar's overtly earthy flavor profile that incorporates plenty of floral notes as well. Caramel sweetness and cereal grain make for a lovely base and when all is said and done, it's a very tasty beer, just a far cry from what the aroma leads the tongue to expect.

M - Biting bitterness assaults the tongue following the beer's smooth body as it lingers with a moisture-depriving level of hop dryness; fantastic for an IPA.

O - The difference between the powerful tropical fruit aroma and big earthy flavor is frankly shocking at first but this Citra dry-hopped Hop Czar remains a quality, delicious IPA through and through!

Poured into a nonic glass. The liquid is a beautiful hazy bright orange. The pour kicks up a one-finger off-white head that fades after a minute to a thin cap over the surface of the beer - a little more than a film, and leaves a nice amount of lace. Really nice looking!

Aroma is very floral, herbal, and earthy, like hop flowers just dug up from the ground (yeah I know that's not how hops grow). There's a nice caramel malt backbone noticeable in the background, kind of like a sugar cookie. Nice, balanced IPA aroma.

The taste starts off with a bit of sugar cookie flavor before the hops kick in. The hops remain delicately floral on the palate, with hints of citrus. The citrus-floral combination makes me think of yuzu. The finish is moderately bitter, and the aftertaste is floral with a bit of resin. Nice interplay between sweet and bitter, and perfectly balanced, with bitterness just winning out.

Mouthfeel is moderately thick, with a moderate amount of soft carbonation.

Overall, really great! I wasn't expecting to like this one - someone picked a bomber of it up for me once trying to be nice and, asshole that I am, I was reluctant to take some time out of my drinking schedule to try it. But this is almost exactly what I like in an IPA/pale ale - interesting hop character, and perfectly balanced malt profile. Really well done!

22 oz bottle bought from Fred Meyers in S.Salem. $3.39 Slightly hazy burnt orange coloured beer with a large creamy crème coloured head. Good fresh hop aromas here..lemon,slightly herbal and fruity nice stuff. Taste similar to the aroma..sweet and hops are drying, but nice again. Good palate..just about right..long lasting bitterness. OK IPA.

Appearance- Pours up a decent amount of head which looks to have pretty good retention. The head is a pure cotton white while the body is a dull, pale to medium amber that appears as a glowing pale amber in the light. Lacing, at the moment, tends toward sheeting.

Nose- Nice aroma with a good amount of presence. Starts off with a good amount of grapefruit and mustiness, maybe even a little armpit. This moves to juicier citrus notes of orange and lemon. Slight hint of malt blended with what seems to be ash. A little matchstick. Some honey and floral character. Some peach appears after a little swirling. Some notes of melon. Lots of mustiness after vigorous swirling- almost suggests stinky cheeses.

Taste- Starts off with a nice juicy front that delves into some of the flavors of the aroma. A bit of mustiness, almost armpit, some citrus notes but anything that was on the nose quickly gives way to big but rounded notes of pine and resin and some matchstick. A tiny bit of grain as almost all notes die away on a subsequent taste. Still a good amount of pine and resin but really lacking in the citrus department. Some juiciness returns but this is striking as more of a watered down version of Hop Czar with light grain but not much of a Citra hops presence. I'm not necessarily complaining as I didn't really want the in your face bitterness of the original but this could use a little more presence and complexity. Some delicate honey and caramel notes around the edges render this as an above average to good beer but mostly good. Some melon starts to come out at the end.

Mouthfeel- Light to medium bodied with perhaps a little too much carbonation- definitely too much zing. This is carbonic to the point of being distracting and almost unpleasant.

Drinkability- Pretty easygoing as is a much more subdued IPA than the original Hop Czar. Fairly accessible and 3.29 is a pretty good price for a bomber.

Overall- Above average to good, but mostly good. Citra presence comes through more and more as I drink it, rendering this pretty much a solid, good beer. Does have some flaws but is worth a try.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Orange/light brown color, hazy with a one-finger head
S: Earthy, floral and citrus notes; a touch muted
T: Also earthy/floral with lighter citrus notes and a solid malt backbone. Fairly lengthy finish which features more citrus
M: Medium-bodied, fairly dry
O: Sometimes I feel single-hop beers lose some of the complexities their multi-hop brethren have. At the same time, it's always educational to see what a single hop brings to the table and this beer is a perfect example of both

I thought I had purchased the regular version of the Hop Czar, just with new bottle art. But apparently this is the 2014 special version, a "Citra Dry-Hopped IPA." The first thought I had was, "Bridgeport" has really improved their craft." In reality, it's just a new version of their IPA. And it's delicious.

Pours hazy orange-amber. Smells citrus-y. Tastes citrus-y. Very hoppy, bitter, and fruity. I taste lemon, orange, and, well....hops.

I bought a bottle of "Hop Czar" and poured it into a frozen glass.

This hit the scene in my area today...im not a huge fan of the regular version although I think its decent... curious as to what the Citra can do for this....

Citrusy aromas are definitely more prominent in this version.... orange and pineapple... hints of some dankness as well... not overpowering but fragrant and nice...

Dank oily citrusy hops with tinges of booze and a caramel like sweetness from the malts... hops seem more prominent at time here....

A nice offering from Bridgeport that I will be buying more of...
