Hop Czar from Oregon's oldest craft brewery, which is where craft brewing really took off in the states so you know that you're in for a good time, plus I like the label depicting the Hop Czar himself, what an odd fellow.

Poured from a 12oz (355ml or thereabouts) bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Clear amber body with a tinge of rust and a boisterous 1cm fluffy white head that wont quit being a head, good for you Hop Czar.

S: Really digging the aroma, which is of course very hop driven; hints of grapefruit, pine resin and an unmistakeable gummy starburst orange fragrance. Notes of caramel linger somewhere in the background, no doubt wanting to quell those unruly hops, to little avail.

T: The flavour is also a big oily slap in the face with a hop flower. It's bold to the point of overdoing it, then it goes ahead and over does it. But what was to be expected from a brew with the name Hop Czar? Flavour is as expected from the nose; grapefruit, pine resin, and instead of starburst orange we get bitter orange (so very bitter). The malt base is also lurking around with its notes of caramel, however aside from a sweetness upfront this brew is one bitter ride.

M: Medium bodied with a light carbonation and a decent oil hop resin slickness.

D: It is fairly bitter hop driven drop, borderline one dimensional, however I enjoyed the boldness of the hopping and revelled in its madness. And for a price that is in the same ballpark as an Aussie craft beer 6-pack this is nothing to be scoffed at. A thumb, two fingers and a toe up for this one.

Food match: For some reason the bitterness of this brew made me think of roasted lamb with rosemary and vegetables like onion, potato, garlic and fennel.

Nothing special but the color is awesome.Smells like an IPA bitter and piny.Taste is a basic blend of hops and possible malt and licorice but Im not sure.Could be better if it was a bit sweeter.Again nothing special and most likely will not purchase again.

A pretty dark amber appearance in the glass. Starts with a Thin, dissipating head, and with unremarkable lacing. Hops on the nose. Piney, peppery, and spicy with a bitter finish. A touch of sweet malt. A solid but forgettable brew. Worth a try but will probably not revisit.
