First thing's first; gotta love the label's artwork! Clean with a hop theme with the czar's wardrobe. The beer comes from a 12 ounce bottle, which is to be poured...now:

It's not the prettiest beer around, as it sits with a washed out orange color with haze. Little head is formed on the pour, and what remains is a thin lace. The aroma is a little hoppy, and even a little strange. It has solid mango and cantaloupe notes, but also a weird fruity smell, like some laundry detergents have. Not so promising.

The taste is somewhat pleasant, even if it isn't up to the class of the style. The beer starts with a slightly sweet taste, then is followed with resin, vague passionfruit, cantaloupe, and bitter grass. Aspirin and woodsy bitterness linger in the aftertaste. It's a medium/full bodied beer with a strong bitterness on the palate.

Middling beer. For an Imperial IPA, middling may not be good enough.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter.
7.5% ABV, 87 IBUs

A - Slightly hazy, this deep golden, almost amber-colored beer has a lovely crown of lasting off-white foam that unravels into sheets of iconic lacing on the snifter.

S - Dank earthy hops overcome the subtle glowing citrus for a hoppy aroma that's resiny character is akin to action figures and pinecone while pineapple and dirty mango bask in the caramel-drizzled biscuty malt base.

T - Honey and caramel drizzled warm biscuit make for a sweet, tasty malt base for the hops to rule over. Bitter resin lends faint plastic to the otherwise fruity profile of the hops which mimic the aroma's juicy pineapple and dirty mango profile.

M - Despite the lingering sweetness the flavor offers, Hop Czar carries with it no sweetness or malt body into the feel. Lighter and smooth, "two pounds [per] barrel" of hops give this beer a crisp and dry bitterness that lasts briefly on the tongue but doesn't pummel it into submission. And the alcohol? Forget about it; not even there.

O - BridgePort labels Hop Czar as brewed with an "irresponsible amount of hops" though I might argue and say the hopping in Hop Czar is just the opposite. That's not to say it's not bad, but the hop additions, while the focal point of the beer, are pretty balanced resulting in a hop-forward brew that showcases American varieties while maintaining a drinkable alcohol and IBU level. Hop Czar is on the cusp of today's standard IPAs but has just enough oomph to give it that little extra boost. Easy drinking and pleasing!

Bottle: a standard 355mL brown bottle with a stylish craft label.

Appearance: pours out a clear amber in colour with darker highlights and light, fine carbonation. A small, thick white head stays for a time.

Aroma: plenty of hops, but not as well-rounded as one would expect. Resin, pine, grapefruit and plenty of heavy earth.

Taste: a bitter earth-and-resinous hop flavour without much subtlety or anything to balance the bitterness out. I don't mind a hop whack in the face, but this one lacks complexity.

Aftertaste: the flavours become even more astringent on the finish - not the most brilliant AIPA I have ever had.

Mouth feel: quite smooth with a bit of sizzle from a somehow fine yet lumpy carbonation. Decent.

Overall: this comes across to me as a beer that was meant to be an over-the-top hop monster, but ended up being an awkward and overly bitter hop so-so. I know it is reasonably well-priced for an American Double / Imperial IPA at just over AU$80 a case (2014), but I'd rather spend a bit extra for a Green Flash or Holgate.
