Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. No freshness/bottling date, but it just arrived at the store a about a week ago.
Nice clear orange-amber color with a frothy 1/2" off-white head. Leaves some clingy lacing, recedes to 1/8" and retains there well, comes back with a swirl.
Juicy, sweet fruit on the nose, pineapple, tangerine, and passion fruit, with a little sharp pine sap underneath it. Nice and rich, inviting.
Comes on with big pine and bitter orange on the taste, clean and fresh tasting with just a touch of sweetness to balance. Loooong finish with a delicious, chewy blend of lemon and lime zest, juicy and bitter with a bit of just dank, leafy hops on the end (simcoe hops maybe). Nice.
Light, smooth texture, ends clean, let's the hops do the talking.
I'm a big proponent of this beer. This fresh bottle was delicious and unique, and I've had it a little bit older where more tropical fruit and sweetness come out and it's still delicious. It's a good, underappreciated year-round DIPA at a really good price ($6.50-$8 for a sixer!). Drink all up on this beer yo!

Thanks Pops!

Poured into a FFF pint glass.

Cloudy yellow/orange with a finger of white head. Small spots of lacing.

The nose is really lacking a strong hop presence. There is an abundance of sweet malts involved and some grains. Maybe a touch of earthy hops.

The taste has a mild bitterness to it without any fruitiness. The malts are tasty and have a light, biscuit-like characteristic. Really not much going on.

The mouthfeel is nice here. What little hops remain create a crisp bitterness that is nice when balanced with a good amount of carbonation.

Overall, pretty let down here but didn't expect much. Either this was an older bottle or it really lacks hoppiness from the gate. Where's the hops?

Starts out with a hop punch, but smooth to the touch. It pours a burnt orange and yes I can see the other side. A strong punch of hops tickles my nostrils. A smooth hops flavor, the Czar would agree. I will hail the king on this one, this drink is robust. The malts in this beverage clear my mind, when the Czar speaks I can understand his voice. At the same time, I must note that this is a typical IPA, yet I have not found an IPA that tickles my mind. Yet. If the boss still drinks this I will join at his side with out hesitation.

Chilled 12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottled on 10.27.11.

Look- Pours a clear medium amber with a hint of rouge. Huge, craggy head on this one- light apricot color, big bubbles. Settles slowly, leaving a respectable amount of chunky lacing. Looks promising. A quarter-inch of foam persisted until the glass was emptied, leaving a double spoonful at the bottom and plenty of lacing on the glass. Very nice.

Smell- All I can say is… wow. Pineapple, fresh cut pine boughs, warm cedar, bubblegum, and mild booze are the major players here. There’s a touch of malt presence, but the sweet, fruity, and spicy aromas really steal the show, bringing to mind a pine-y barleywine. I can’t say I didn’t salivate a bit the first time I smelled it. There are more than a few great-smelling DIPAs out there, but this one really stands out.

Taste- Quite fruity, with a subdued bitterness that grows over time. Nondescript bubblegum fruit and biscuit/caramel malt dominate, with a moderate herbal spice that is present throughout. I also get grapefruit zest, mild alcohol, and aspirin/salicylic acid. Aftertaste is herbal and buttery, and lingers for a long, long time. Plenty of flavor here, but unfortunately the elements seem to detract from one another rather than balancing or emphasizing as they should, and the underlying herbal taste takes some of the polish off the citrus and muddles the malt. Nonetheless, it’s definitely better than average for the style.

Mouthfeel- Most of the carbonation comes out on the pour, leaving a few bubbles to tickle the tongue on the sip. Medium-bodied and slick, it comes off as smooth and rich. Refreshing, with spot-on light dryness at the end. It’s quite drinkable for the style, and I wouldn’t mind having a few of these in a row. Drinks like fresh pineapple juice or sweet tea- you wouldn’t want a ton, but a pint or two can be quite refreshing.

Overall- Good, if not spectacular, and interesting- I’d like to see where the brewery takes it in the future, and I'll keep an eye out for fresher bottles. I’ll definitely be picking this one up again at some point, thanks to the decent price and better-than-most drinkability. May even be a new go-to when I’m not feeling like Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Recommended.

Appearance: Nice white/tan frothy head, good lacing. Beer is cloudy copper color. Good carbonation.

Smell: Citrusy/piney hops with a hint of caramel.

Taste: Piney, citrusy hops with sweet maltiness, but the hops confuses by taste buds on what the sweet malt tastes like.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, would like more carbonation.

This is a way better than average beer and it hits the spot if you're having a hop fit. It's too hoppy and heavy for me to drink many, but having a few here and there would be really nice.

Poured into a Cigar City Snifter.

*Great amber to a darker brown appearance.

*Bold aroma of citrus and pine.

*Upfront hop bitterness- with a low malt balance. Perfect for any hophead.

*The mouthfeel is solid- full bodied and lingers of hop oils.

*My overall review is that the Bridgeport Hop Czar is a very underrated beer- the strong and earthy flavor kicks you right in the mouth. I think it needed a little more alcohol to satisfy an imperial label- but overall a GREAT beer.

Poured from brown 12oz bottle to pint glass.

A - The beer pours a dark orange color with about a half finger of white head. Some retention and good lacing.

S - Rather weak aroma of citrus and tropical fruit. Some malty sweetness on the back end.

T - The beer starts with the medium bitterness along with the malt sweetness. It develops to include the fruity hop character: citrus, melon, and tropical fruit. Finishes clean and crisp with a bitter linger.

M - Lighter end of medium with good carbonation

D - Decent

Overall, this is nowhere near the top of the DIPA list but it isn't bad.

Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.
