Tasted 13 August 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours effectively black, with a faint hint of brown at the very edges. One finger of dense medium-brown head, quite dark. Good retention and solid lacing. Good stuff.

Smells like an oaky porter. I don’t get much whiskey, and I’m okay with that. Very roasty, dark chocolate with a touch of char.

Taste is good, but a little funny. I still don’t get much whiskey in it, which surprises me. Starts out with cocoa (unsweetened), then goes into a deep char, then relaxes into a soft bitterness. It’s very three-part, with pronounced transitions between those segments. I’d like them all better if they blended into one. As it is, it feels fragmented and jolty. Smooths out as it warms up, but also becomes a bit hollow.

Mouthfeel is fine, though it’s light-bodied for an “imperial porter”. Medium-low carbonation. Not bad, not great.

An interesting beer. I really can’t find much influence of the barrels. Fine and dandy, but not more.

650ml bomber given to me by my brewing lecturer. This particular bottle may have been ~12 months old. Shared with Sam.

Pours a deep, dark brown colour, lighter at the edges, with a muddled, flaky cola-coloured head. Some streaky, but thin and watery lace. Fine, perhaps thin, body with minimal carbonation. Overall, it doesn't look particularly exciting.

Nose is mild and toasty, with a bit of sweet, estery fruit: banana coming through in particular. Slight peppery characters, and some cocoa and sweetness as it warms, giving it a toasted banana bread character. There's not a lot to it, to be honest, but it's not bad.

Taste is a bit better. Sweet darkness on the front, with raisins, sultanas and some toffee, before a robust, almost ashy bitterness swells on the finish. There's some rummy booze, a hint of pepper again, and some earthiness. It's maybe a little bit too thin in the mouth, but the carbonation is fine.

Overall, yeah, it's nice enough, but it's far from being really exciting or interesting. It's just decent. It's missing some overarching structure and complexity, and ends up feeling a little too generic.

Had this awhile ago, but have managed to put off logging this review. A partially barrel aged beer that is $6/bomber. That's a rarity these days. Pretty balanced Porter. Coffee, milk chocolate, toasted wood, and burnt sugar. Even bitterness with a coarse earthy hop flavor. Well integrated and subtle barrel character. Don't expect a big, aggressive wood-aged beer and you won't be disappointed. Just a slightly bigger solid American Porter. A solid value.
