look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Served on-tap at First Street Draught House in Winston-Salem, NC

A: Pours a hazy medium burnt orange in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and some golden yellow + apricot highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy beige head that slowly reduces to a medium to large patch of thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of citrus/orange, pine, and herbal hops with a lighter aroma of caramel malt sweetness.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of caramel malt sweetness that is quickly followed by the flavors of the hops - citrus/orange, pine, and herbal (almost medicinal). Moderate amounts of lingering bitterness which is initially kind of sharp.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: A little too bitter and medicinal in the finish makes this beer a little tough to be drink easily. Rather average for an IPA in my opinion - I will not be seeking this one out again.

Poured from a draft into a pint glass at ABQ Pub in Albuquerque, N.M., on April 21. Color was hazy yellow gold. About a finger of head. Puffy, cloudy lacing on the top that lasted throughout the pour. Lots of wet, thick, spongy film on the sides.

Smelled citrus hops, pine, soap and lime.

Tasted as a better version of the smell. Got lime, pine and citrus hops. Smooth and easy drinking. A small amount of bitterness.

Light body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Smooth, balanced finish. Refreshing.

Good change of pace for an IPA. Lime and piny. Crisp, clean and refreshing.

On tap at the Portland Brewery.

A - Served a light yellowish-orange with a smallish white head. Good retention and lots of lacing left on the glass.

S - Pretty mild, but mostly grass, pine, and very herbal.

T - Similar to the smell. Mostly grassy and herbal.

D - Light body and good carbonation. Mild all-around.

O - Pretty weak. Mild for you that are afraid of west coast ipas.

Comes out of the tap a clear golden amber with a fine-bubbled cream-white head. Hoppy, yeasty aroma has a firm hint of citrus. Strongly hoppy flavor is quite bitter but not fiercely so and has a good grapefruit undertone. Tingly texture leaves a fizzy and slightly powdery finish.

Served on-tap at the Black Lab Pub in Houston... in a standard pint glass.

It was a clear amber color, with a finger or two of foamy white head. Pretty good retention and lacing!

It had a nice citrus hop smell, not too rough... and a very palatable hop-dominated flavor.

A very solid IPA that paved the way for a Hardcore IPA to follow... I enjoyed this one a good bit but nothing TOO awesome.

Of the two IPAs they had available (Bridgeport and BrewDog Hardcore) there was a definite divide into the one that I would absolutely recommend to someone looking to get into the style, and the one to appease the hopheads!

A-Nice golden tint, somewhat hazy, leaves a slim head at the top with some simple lacing around the glass.

S-Very modest, not like other IPA'S, smell of some grains and hints of lemons

T-Very mild bitterness nothing crazy, not like normal IPAS, some citrus hops as well

M-Medium bodied, with some carbonation.

D-Very simple IPA, for its price and taste I would not mind some on a hot summers day by the pool.

On tap at Ha' Penny Irish pub, Boise.

Poured into a Guiness Pint Glass.

First thing I noted was it was a beautiful deep orange color. There was one finger of foamy head that didn't disappear too quickly. A little carbonation was visible.

Smell was instantly of grapefruit I thought. It smells clean and crisp, my wife picked up on the pine-ish smell. Smells good but not too strong.

Taste is good, but weak, if that makes sense. Not very hoppy for an IPA at all, but the taste is pleasant and smooth and crisp. Citrus is the main flavor.

Mouthfeel is relatively good, its light and smooth and crisp and clean.

Drinkability is pretty good in my opinion. As long as you're not expecting a ton of hop bite and presence, its a good beer I believe.

on tap

I reviewed this on cask previously, then had it on tap 2 days later. That is probably too much time for a direct comparison, but I will do so anyway. Overall I would say the tap was a little crisper, clearer, and a good beer. It didn't have the freshness of the cask or the flavor. Verdict..the cask was better.

Tried this when I visited Portland. I'm just starting to appreciate hoppy beers. I'm glad it happened BEFORE my trip to the West Coast because many of their beers are hoppier, in general. Tried a sampler at the Bridge Port brew pub. This was my favorite. Very tasty hoppy beer, incredibly balanced. Would definitely seek out again.

My pint was a hazy gold colour and was topped with a thin beige cap. Lots of lacing though and the head stuck around for most of the pint. Aromas of fresh citrus, orange and tangerine. Solid bitterness and hoppy up front with just a bit of malt in the background. Hops faded towards the end, but bitterness lingered. Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation, a bit dry, nice texture. Good stuff.

Murky gold-orange with a finger of head that fades away after a few moments.

The aroma is citric and piny with a strong grapefruit component.

The flavor is hop-forward with heavy citrus rind, pine, and some herbal background notes. The hops are balance fairly well by some lightly sweet and bready malt.

Really a nice IPA and one of the original hoppy west coast ales.

Ap - Perfect IPA color with slight haziness.
Ar - Richly aromatic with herbs, hops, straw, and citrus
T - Very high level of hops but not bitter
M - Medium to full bodied with a great texture and acidity
D - Hop balance and tannin, alcohol, and acidity in harmony

I am surprised that I rated this so highly. I am a huge IPA nut and perhaps I gave this high scores because of the incredible balance this beer has. I have yet to try from bottle, but I will try both next to each other and revise my reviews.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a pretty medium yellow, with a 1/2 inch of white head that had good retention and lacing.

The aromas were very hop forward, as expected for the style, with a little malt sweetness on the nose. This beer was more balanced than is typical for the style, a slightly sweet taste is present, while still having a nice mix of hop flavors, noticeably pine on the finish.

The body was average for the style, but very smooth. This is a very drinkable IPA, as it won't just kill your tastebuds after a couple. A beer worth trying, and worth keeping a few in the fridge as a go-to brew.

Drinking this on tap at my favorite local spot.

Pours a golden orange color with a finger of head and lots and lots of carbonation bubbles.

I pick up grapefruit hops on the first smell and taste.

I tried this on the recommendation of the bar manager and it was a great call. Can't beat quality beers @ $2

This is by far my favorite IPA and the benchmark by which I compare all others, and I came across it by accident while looking for a place to eat in Portland. While it is good from the bottle it seems to have a hight IBU from the tap. It has good color and aroma that has a touch of citrus. The bitterness is perfectly balanced with the flavors. Unfortunately I no longer live in Portland and have moved to a state, Nevada, that doesn't carry any of the beers from the Bridgeport Brewery, but this one is good enough to travel for. If you know of a better IPA please let me know so I can try it.

Pours clear, bright yellow, medium pale head, good lacing. Slight but steady carbonation.

Smells fruity and sweetish, some pine and some floral.

Taste is mostly citrus-sweet, maybe honey-suckle sweet, with a downplayed hoppy bitterness -- very refreshing. It may seem more refreshing now than it normally would, since today it followed Great Divide's Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout.

Feels light and airy in the mouth, very drinkable. Sometime, I'll have to get a twelve pack.

On draft from shaker glass. Medium off-white head with good lacing through the finish. Deep golden color. Nice hoppy aroma. Actually better aroma than the Stone IPA I had earlier from a 22 oz. bottle into tulip. Dry, bitter, flavorful to the finish. I would definitely have again if given the opportunity. Above average IPA IMO - Cheers!

Beer is a dark golden color, fairly clear with a little bit of head floating above that left some lacing here and there on the glass. The nose is dominated by hops with pine and some orange and lime citrus shining through. Light to medium bodied on the palate. There is a little bready maltiness up front but that is quickly overtaken by an assault of pine and citrus hops. There seems to be a hint of fruitiness in the center.

This is not a bad brew. I feel that it could use a little more depth and it would be a great one.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this beer. Out to lunch with family over the holiday, at a restaurant in Portland called Beaches. I ordered this because it was the only IPA on the menu. I'd never been to this place before, but to my surprise not only was the food awesome but this beer was really really good. Not as in your face with the hops that most good IPA's are known for, the hops were a little calmer, and there was this honey taste coming through. Very nice smell, nice appearance. Overall I was very pleased with this beer. I only hope I can find it in my hometown.

Had this on tap at the First St. Draught House here in town. Came out a murky light gold, thought it would be a little bit darker. Large foamy white head on top. Excellent lacing with perfect rings around the glass.

Smell was average with some citrus and pine hoppiness. Floral tones and a little sweet smelling. Pretty good taste. Definitive grapefruity-hop presence that was balanced pretty well by some malty sweetness. Good and crisp. Easily drinkable due to the smoothness, and the flavor. Recommend.

A great American Standard. This IPA has always been my favorite from around town here. Always found everywhere I go too in any near by store.

Excellent color like a light copper glass tile. A great bitter aroma with many hoppy citrus-like and big pine notes. Leaves the mouth a bit dry like a good bitter Ale should... makes me want to keep drinking it. Great carbonation which makes belching easy.. thus making more room. Not too filling, and can never upset.

My #1 in an IPA.

GABF Weekend '08
It's good to revisit this beer after about five years. Along with Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale, this beer defines the style for Pale Ales. A very crisp malt backbone shows low-lying sweetness but strong malt character that hinges toward well attenuated barley flavors and an accentuated hop bitterness. Hop flavor in almost undoubtedly Cascade with a spicy grapefruit-orange zest flavor. Finishes with a snappy malt dryness and a lingering fresh hop flavor.

Nice light amber color, off-white head with some good staying power. Lacing is minimal.

Fruity hop aroma, some caramel and sweet malt balancing this out, but primarily hop infused aroma. Taste is of mild grapefruit, not biting, sweetened. Some bitter hops in the finish but generally fades fast and really leaves you wanting more. I think I could chug this 20-oz'er.

Medium bodied, not at all filing but noticeably substantial. I like this IPA, and I did have another.

Pours a clear golden color with a thin white head. Decent retention and lace.

The aroma is full of citrusy and piney hop character, also a touch of sweetness.

Taste has a nice citrus hop with some grassy tones. A nice light bittering bite.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with gentle carbonation.

Drinkability is relatively high with good flavor and low alcohol making it very easy to consume.

Served on-tap @ The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium in Cordova, TN.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a thin, white head that quickly parts company. Active carbonation throughout session.

Moderately floral, hoppy nose.

Citrus and hops with a subtle malt undertone and hints of biscuit. Extremely well-balanced. Bitter finish reminiscent of grapefruit rinds. Crisp and refreshing. The hops make a definitive statement without overpowering the taste profile.

Nice mouthfeel with smooth carbonation. Medium-bodied.

Very sessionable. Drinkability: high.
