Appearance: Pours an extremely dark, but clear, reddish-brown. It's light tan head starts out thick and rich, then slowly fades to an ultra thin cap with scattered islands of bubbles. Strong lacing on the glass.
Smell: The aroma is very clean, with most of the attention going to the malt. Lots of chocolate toffee, along with a slight nuttiness. A strong mineral note cuts through the malt. A bit of herbal, leafy hop as well.
Taste: Like the aroma, the flavor is very clean with a lot of malt providing a strong backbone. Chocolate and brown malts stand out the most, with some roasted and caramel malts to a much lesser degree. Leafy, earthy, and slighty funky hops help to provide some semblance of balance. As in the nose, there's a strong mineral component. Finishes well balanced, with a slight charcoal note.
Mouthfeel: Clean and crisp, with a somewhat thin body. Good amount of dryness on the finish.
Drinkability: Outstanding drinkability with this one! Even though I've noticed some inconsistencies from bottle to bottle, this is one seriously kick-ass brown porter. I'm sure that some of the lower scores here are due to the fact that those reviewers tastebuds are used to over-the-top porters. This brew is traditional, well balanced, and tasty as all hell!
