Appearance - Pours a nice reddish amber with a 2 finger head, good retention and a thick, semi-sticky lacing.

Smell - Bready, with a hint of Caramel and a citrus hop note.

Taste - Follows the nose; bready, caramel malts. Finishes sweet, with red apple and a faint citrus note sparkling faintly in the back end.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Fairly decent carbonation.

Overall - A good red ale. Lots of interesting, mellow flavors. Definitely a must try, if not for you, at least me again.

A- Pours a deep amber from the 12oz bottle into a tumbler with a murkiness and visible chunks suspended in the brew. A thick, fluffy off-white crown flies up to over two fingers with good retention. Massive pillows of lace at the top of the glass followed by big webs and drizzle.

S- A balance is struck here between malts and hops probably just a bit shaded toward the grains. Toasty and caramel malts lead off with citrus and herbal hops rounding it out. Bready yeast.

T- Bitterness opens up here and provides some depth to the hops which provide orange peel, herbal tea and floral notes. Caramel, toasted, slightly nutty and spicy malts with just a hint of fruit and some bread coming from the yeast.

MF- Medium bodied overall with a foamy overall texture. Carbonation comes in at a medium-high level and it all finishes with a bitter bite.

A balanced Amber that masks its ABV well and presents a balanced flavor between bitter orange zesty hops and toasted Amber grains. The rye adds just enough spiciness without drowning out the other flavors in the beer.

Big waft of fruitcake and wild herbs in the nose. Mildly hazed deep amber color shows some tiny bubbles; those same bubbles have produced an epic creamy lacing. The ale is not shy, and shows off its lush smoothness right away, while the malty medium body holds together very well. Biscuit, bread crust and a hint of grainy caramel throughout the malt--this beer does show its bold Red Ale side. Hops throw down a pretty hefty bitterness, brash but flavorful. Fruitiness suggests ripe apple orchard flavors with a hint of golden raisin in the back end; alcohol is warming. Finishes bittersweet and biscuity. A worthy encounter--a bit more caramel edge would do it great, but a good drink nonetheless.

12oz bottle. Pours a reddish amber with a medium creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is a bit subdued - sweet bready caramel and crystal malts with some pine and resin hops and a touch of fruit.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts and rye with some green resiny hops in that have decent bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low sharp carbonation.

Overall, an OK hoppy red. Nothing too special though.

Look is ok--very little carbonation and almost no head after the initial pour. And my initial pour was vigorous--a mistake since now there is a lot of particulates of yeast in suspension, which I would have done my best to avoid with a slow pour had I known this brew was unfiltered.

Smell is yeasty and fruity, but not too strong. It's pleasant. The mouthfeel is moderate to light, without much carbonation at all to add to texture. The taste is distinct--tangy, spicy bitterness that comes from the hops and yeast, with some fruitiness and light malt that adds a bit of balance, but not much. Alcohol is noticeable. It has a citrus bite but not a citrus flavor, if that makes sense. I like it.

My lasting impression is, "I could make that." This looks and tastes like my attempts at creating an IPA from scratch without really knowing what's what. I suppose what I actually made was an American amber--good to know.

Picked some of these up in Arizona. Dark red and amber color, below average head, creamy texture and appearance to it. Aroma was slightly hoppy, had that mildly sweet and dry irish malt thing going.

Decently hopped taste, toffee, irish moss and/or malt seemed evident, mild grapefruit tinge from the hops. Hides 7.5% alcohol well. For the triple hopping claims, falls short of hoppy expectations, but still remains a solid choice at the price. ($8/6). More bitter than almost any red ale short of nugget nectar.

BA Review #825

12 oz undated bottle served in a Sam Adams lager glass. While this bottle has no date, it is from a 6-pack purchased some time ago and I estimate the age to be about 1 year. If memory serves me, this aging improved the beer overall: Despite a drop in hoppiness, the beer seems less harsh and more balanced than when fresh. Along these lines, note that this is a "triple hopped double red ale" -- It is an imperial red or Red IPA more than an Amer. amber/red as classified by BA.

Pours a hazy red-amber with a semi-durable head. The aroma is a rather hop-forward - not your grandfather's red ale. The malt is still there as a base. In addition, "herbal", "earthy" and "spicy" can be applied to the nose ... and to the taste. The taste [3.75], however, is more balanced with a substantial medium malt component nearly keeping pace with the hops in this "triple hopped" ale. Both of these linger on and on in the aftertaste. Some nice complexity in both aroma and flavor.

M: medium+ body; well-chosen, medium carbonation.

O: better and much more drinkable than remembered; some aging recommended.

A- The slightly hazy deep brown body has a sea of microbubbles supporting a thick lumpy beige head for the full beer.

S- The soft green notes mix with caramel malt and some brassy hint in the finish that grows a bit as the beer warms.

T- The dry slightly pungent hops give way to some biscuit malt flavor with cream and slightly toasted malt notes. There is a dandelion bitterness in the finish that lingers. There is a soft grassy dry hop note in the finish.

M- The light mouthfeel is slightly astringent with no alcohol heat noticed.

O- The full bitterness of the hops and really dry finish make this abrasive and a bit harsh to drink.

Pretty good sized off white to light tan head so slowly recedes above a clear orange-ish copper colored red.

A very light malty, maybe some bread like quality, might be a hint of orange in the aroma.

A nice light cutting edge to the taste of this beer, it has a toasted almost roasted caramel malt taste that seems to finish with a very light sour lemon bitterness to it.

There is a dryness to the aftertaste, yet it does not seems to be as dry a aftertaste like I'm accustomed to.

A solid medium bodied beer that seems to get better as the glass gets emptier.

12 oz bottle poured into a chalice. (I know, it was the only clean glass I had lying around) No markings to date it.

Average appearance with a color like a strong brewed tea. Single finger of chalky foam that evaporated pretty quickly. Some lacing, but not as much as the Port City Shark Attack I tried last night. Not a bubble in sight after settling.

Malt and hops on the nose. I'm hoping that aromas will develop the more it warms up.

Plenty of malt as far as taste goes. Not detecting much hopsy citrus for a beer marked "triple hopped" on the label. Hmmm. According to their website, these are Liberty hops.

While pleasant enough, there is that tangy finish that isn't sitting well with me. Granted, the 7.5% ABV hides well, so maybe after two more I could ignore the sharpness.

Not bad, and certainly good to see more red ales out there, and at $8 for a sixer, this would be interesting to bring to a beer swap without feeling like you're being cheap. I've tried a couple of the Bridgeport brews and think Hop Czar is a much better offering.

Would I buy it again? Not necessarily. Would I drink it again? Yeah, I think so. Draw your own conclusions based on that.

12oz bottle, from a recent trip to PDX.

This beer pours a clear dark copper hue, with one finger of thinly foamy pale beige head, which leaves some layered droopy lace around the glass as it readily settles. It smells of sweet biscuity, toasted malt, fruity floral hops, and a subtle sugary booziness. The taste is bready biscuit malt, bitter leafy hops, and an increasingly noticeable yeasty alcohol presence. The carbonation is on the low side of average, the body medium weight, and otherwise smooth for our purpose. It finishes still fairly sweet, the somewhat spicy rye presently coming out of its shell, amongst the other breadiness, in addition to a still sporty, acerbic, edgy hop bitterness.

The purported hop profile doesn't really flesh out, beyond rendering a generic bitter crutch, but it's nice to see the rye strutting its stuff on the flip side.

12oz. bottle served cold into pint glass.

I picked this one up because I liked the idea of a highly hopped imperial red ale. Lets see if it stands up to the description.

Appearance is redish amber with good clarity. The head is short and settles fast but there is a little lace left behind.

Aroma is hoppy but more apple and orchard fruits than fresh citrus and pine.

Flavor is big on malts for sure but hops are mostly providing bitterness than actual hop flavor or aroma. Caramel and apples, pine and earth.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated. Alcohol is not very well hidden with it being especially evident on the after taste/burn.

Overall just not what I was hoping for or expecting. Bitter yes but hoppy goodness, no.

A dark auburn girl... Slight ruby grapefruit in the nose, some milk chocolatey malt aromas as well. Hops pop out at the outstart followed tomato and grapefruit skin and finally some cracked grain at the backend. An interesting twist i'm getting is belgian yeast? Well its enjoyable with medium light body, and alka seltzer carbonation.

This beer seems like a confused adopted stepchild wandering through a family reunion. Lots of hops argue with a malty red base and strange flavors intermingle.

Poured from the 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Body is a pretty orange-amber color, with almost no head. In fact, the body is almost perfectly still. Aroma of sweet, bready malt and fruity hops. Notes of sweet fruit (apple? maybe a little citrus?) and a touch of roast character come through as the beer warms.
Palate is sweet, bready, and a touch fruity up front. A mild bitterness from the hops emerges on the swallow, helping to temper the sweetness. The yeast imparts a very distinctive, bready character that's endemic to all Bridgeport beers. The roast character really comes through on the finish.
Body is smooth and creamy, not nearly as still as the appearance would indicate. As full as a big red ale should be, without the stickiness of some imperial ales. On the whole, a very drinkable new offering from Bridgeport. While this is obviously an attempt to compete with Ninkasi's Believer, it fills a slightly different spot in the lineup by not being a complete hop bomb. Still, it's a very enjoyable brew.

A: Deep mahogany hue with a solid one-inch head--decent retention and great lacing

S: Pretty sweet and fruity--almost like fruit loops at first finally followed by a bready malt base

T: Strange hop bitterness--a bit medicinal, herbal, and grassy--followed by an interesting fruity quality--pears, apples, lemons, oranges--that mingle well with a bready malt base; also strangely dry in the finish

F: Good mouth feel up front but the beer nearly evaporates on the back end

O: This is actually a very odd beer; I like it but I like odd things; this is really like nothing I've had...hmm

Poured into a wide flute glass. Deep red color with a thick, finger and half of tight dirty head. Really well put together.
Big malt nose, small lemon and grapefruit, banana at the end.
This is a bold taste. Lots of malt balanced with an equal large dose of hops. The bitterness wins out at the end with an uppercut to the tongue. It is a little unruly but worth it.
Smooth and creamy texture with low carbonation. Works really well.
A straightforward and bold flavor. Beautiful to look at. An enjoyable and different amber ale.

Clear reddish amber with a 1/4 off white head that dwindled down to a small halo in a few minutes. Not much of a smell. Tasted good going in, malts, smoke, biscuit. Some mellow hops on the back end, and the warming of the belly with alcohol. Though the hops are not too bitter, they linger quite a while.

Got this the first day it was put on the shelf from Hop City in Atlanta.

A - The appearance is this beer's strength. Pours a nice clear amber color with a tan 2 finger head that lingers for a bit then settles to a thin layer for the duration of the tasting. Leaves some patchy lacing around the side as I drink it. Nice.

S - The nose is mostly some bready malts with some spiciness as well as some floral hops. The smell in general is rather subdued however, I have to really get in there to get any smell at all.

T - Being advertised as a "double" red ale, I expected a much more full bodied experience from this beer. Again some bready malt sweetness, some peppery spice and some hoppiness but this is pretty bland and not very complex.

M - Mouthfeel is again a little thin for the "double" red ale tag.

D - Drinkability is good for 7.5%. Well hidden and not too filling. A decent beer.

Appearance -Amber in color and a tad bit murky but still mostly clear, not very fizzy (YEAH) The head is frothy, lacing the glass as it settels d...own. It looks like a good Amber Ale should...

Smell -Malts smell kind of caramelly. The hops have a piney and citrus like scent to them. You can smell that these hops will taste sharp. The yeast is kind of hanging out, not ruining what the malty hops are doing...

Taste - Ahhh.... This is what an Amber should taste like!! A sharp dry hops profile with necessary bitterness common to this style. You should taste strong hops, but this one doesnt venture into the stronger ale categories. Malt flavor complements the hops... A joy to drink.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied like an Amber Ale should be.

I love this one... BUY IT! Bridgeport nails Amber Ale with this one.

The look of this brew is a deep, very clear, brownish red with minimal bubbles, which concerns me as sometimes I admire the carbonation and look of Bridgeport more than MANY other breweries. The head was off white and faded quick. The smell is toast, sweet malt, and caramel with a bit of an earthy hop edge.

Glug glug glug

The flavor is that of red ale with a slightly more pronounced hop character. (I realize that may seem a little "no Duh" but that's exactly what this beer is) The malt is traditional toasty caramel flavor with a bigger earthy, herbal hop presence than normally expected. Overall this is good but the hop flavor needs to be blended into the flavor better and the overall hop character to me is a bit one sided.

A: amber-red/orange in a goblet glass

S: malty and floral

T: caramel and malt with slight hops and nuts, even a little citrus

M: slightly bitter finish but a nice finish overall

O: Bought a 6er on sale for $5.99, a more than fair price for a unique beer. Interesting how 'triple hops' and 'double red' mix. I'm normally not a big fan of red ale but would definitely buy again for that price.

Poured a clear red liquid with an off white thick head that was well retained. The aroma was a nice malt and hop aroma, well balanced. The taste, as with the nose, is well balanced, malt sweetness balanced with floral hops. The beer has a medium feel to it. The beer is smooth, clean has good carbonation. Overall, a very solid and interesting beer with a nice aftertaste.

Pours copper with a large lasting head.
Nose shows caramel, toffee, bready malt and nutty notes. Also some soft spicy hops.
Some caramel transfers through as a flavour along with some bready notes. A fairly sharp, metallic finish follows from the combined alcohol and bitterness.
Body feels overly syrupy.

First tap review, odd... figured an Oregonian BA would take care of that.

Served in a standard pint glass, it had a glowing russet tone, with ruby highlights when held to the light. Creamy, frothy cap of foam that left a sticky network of lacing all around the glass. Retention was good, an unbroken skim lasted for the duration of the glass.

Very estery with fried plantains, caramel sauce, and baked apples. Slightly sweet, appropriate for a big Amber Ale. Comes across with Maibock nuances.

Hearty yet easy drinking, dominated by an estery yeast flavor manifesting as fresh sliced apples. Pleasant malt complexity, crusty multigrain bread and honey. Slighty toasty, breadiness and apple notes seem to domintate. Medium bodied and easy drinking. It has fortitude, yet never feels heavy. Something i'd drink again for sure, seems well suited to cooler weather.

Poured from the bottle into my snifter a deep amber color, head was off white and average, about two fingers. Head dissipate quickly with really good lacing. Aromas were very balanced with a great caramel malt smell, and floral hops. Taste is balanced as well, with malt sweetness and great balance from floral flavors. Feel is smooth, with some oiliness, light carbonation. Overall a good beer, fitting in the style, though I would have appreciated a little more hop flavor, and carbonation.
