look: 3.25 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Appearance 3.25: Good looking beer. Deep amber color, but wouldn't necessarily describe it as "red." Nice size head (1/4") that quickly faded, but left a white film on top.

Smell 3.25: Subdued bouquet. Faint hops, slight smell of barley.

Taste 3.75: Big change from the smell. Front is semi-sweet and slightly spicy. Middle is all barley and caramel malt, which smooths everything out. Finish is hoppy and semi-sweet, with big alkaline hops floating in the back of the palate. Aftertaste is long and has an emphasis on the spiciness and the mid-palate hoppiness. Nice.

Mouthfeel 3.75: Really spot on carbonation for this style of beer.

Overall 3.75: Certainly, this is just a few steps away from an outstanding beer. The taste is very good as is the mouthfeel and I would order round after round of these if I could find them on tap. There are a few knocks on it, but very few. This is an easy-drinking 7.5% (!) ale and if you are a fan of red ales, you will be hard-pressed to find a better one. If you are accustomed to a certain red ale that starts with a "K," this baby will blow your mind.

330ml bottle. Best before Sept 2013.

A: Pours a hazy copper colour (red?). Finger of foam that fades to a small raft of foam.
S: Lots of spiciness, rye & cinnamon. Toast and bready malt. Toffee sweetness.
T: Lots of bready, toffee with a touch of rye & cinnamon. A small amount of bitterness but balance towards the malty side.
M: Smooth rich mouthfeel but not heavy.
O: Nice, interesting spicy character with supporting rich malt characters. I guess that a lot of the hop character has dropped out, as the bottle states 'triple hopped'.

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours a clear copper with a three-fingered head that leaves a few dots of lacing

Smell: Spicy rye bread, caramel and earthy/piney hops; rather herbal

Taste: Fruity, with apple and strawberry tones, up front; caramel and earthy/piney flavors develop, in the middle; harsh, spicy and metallic, after the swallow, with an unbalanced finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A rather unusual beer with a range of surprising flavors - too bad it doesn't work better

Thanks, kemoarps, for the opportunity

Bottle: standard brown 355mL bottle, pretty cool old-school label. I like it.

Appearance: clear bronze colouring, with a one-finger off-white head. Good retention, and a decent amount of lacing.

Aroma: some sweet caramel malts back a pepper-and-hop overtone. Pine and grapefruit with some citrus. Nice, but a touch weak.

Taste: the taste is similar, but somehow better defined and more full in body. The hops definitely come through stronger - a nice slow sipper.

Aftertaste: definitely a slow sipping beer - the hop bitterness picks up, offering a fantastic red ale bite. One of the best.

Mouth feel: medium in body with a lasting bitterness. Hangs around in the mouth for quite a while, which is nice.

Overall: without a doubt the best American Red Ale I have had to date. A good sipping ale - something worth while onece every now and then. The price is a bit restrictive at AU$100 a case (2013), but a 6-pack every now and then won't hurt too badly.
