Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: BevMo in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $14.99 for a BevMo variety 8-pack (w/ BevMo card)
Purchased: Dec. 31, 2013
Consumed: Jan. 9, 2014
Misc.: N/A

Poured a light brown semi-hazy color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki head. Looked a bit like a cool glass of iced tea. Above average and sporadic, but layered foamy lacing. Above average retention on the way down.

Smelled that 7.50 percent ABV right away. Got caramel, toffee, rye hops, Irish cream, faint bourbon and some earthy, dirty hops.

Tasted pretty much what I thought was going to taste like. Got a healthy dose of bitter rye hops, iced tea, Irish cream and grassy, earthy hops. Also some roasted nutty malts.

Medium-to-full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Bitter finish.

Not a big fan of this beer. The smell was the best part, but it went down from there.

12 oz bottle poured into an Imperial Pint.
7.5% ABV, 65 IBUs

A - With it's deep copper color, Kingpin looks warm and inviting though faintly hazy. Atop the beer lies a crown of tan whipped foam that sits on it's throne infinitely, casting heaping chunks of lace to the glass.

S - Kingpin sure smells like a hopped-up red ale but at first whiff it doesn't quite strike me as "tripple hopped" - can Miller sue them for that, or vice versa?. The balance is nice though, rounding out to a smooth double red with luscious caramel sweetness, Munich malt-like breadiness and toasted finish overlapping the earthy hop varietals.

T - The flavor profile of Kingpin sticks with the same balanced approach that the aroma does; hefty malts for it's "double" stature that have an overarching sweet, bready character with a finish of earthy hops that display a bit more citrus and pine character than the nose lets on.

M - I keep mentioning balance and once again, despite the higher IBUs (65 to be exact), it's the focal point, and probably best attribute of the beer. A smooth malty entry leads to a quietly rising dryness and finish of well-placed bitterness that doesn't overwhelm but works to cut the medium bodied malty sweetness off at the perfect point.

O - I'm not quite sure what BridgePort means by "triple hopped" with their double red ale, Kingpin but I assure you, there's a hell of a lot more hops in here than Miller's "triple hopped" Lite. Either way, while exponentially hoppier than that bladder-filling swill, Kingpin seems more balanced than anything which seems to work out great. Sweet, bready malt provides a nice body and smooth feel with predominantly earthy hops filling in the gaps and finishing out with dry bitterness for an easy drinking (and higher alcohol) red that won't destroy your taste buds in the process.

Here's to the new beer: 2014! First beer of the year is BridgePort Kingpin, of which I thought the Hop Czar was a decent drop despite a few very minor niggles. Well let's see how the Kingpin stacks up with it.

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: A nice deep but clear rust-coloured body with a meaty off-white head that sticks around at a solid 1.5cm, impressive to see an ale with a head like this that isn't tap poured.

S: The nose is a prominent mix of fruity hops, honeyed figs, caramel malt and a hit of bread characters from the yeast. Possibly one of the most balanced aromas between hops, malt and yeast that I've encountered in all my years, well played BridgePort.

T: Favour is where the balance skews decidedly towards sweet, which is a shame because it had much promise. The palate begins caramel/honey sugar sweet, followed by a muted bread middle and finishing with slightly sharp medicinal bitter herb hop flavour. Overall the sweetness is needed to balance that bitter hop note, but one thinks the balance would be better without such a bitter hop note to begin with.

M: Medium bodied with light carbonation and hop resin oils throughout, not unlike its Hop Czar cousin.

D: Not as enjoyable as the Hop Czar. Whereas Hop Czar was expected to be brutal in its bitterness, and by style-default warranted, this is one brew I was hoping would have a bit more balance in the flavour. That being said the hops do seem to die down a little as it gets warmer (or my taste-buds have been clobbered into submission), either way it becomes a little bit nicer with some warming. Price-wise on an even keel with Hop Czar so out of the two Hop Czar is the better.

Food match: As the flavour became more fruitcake I began thinking about Christmas ham, turkey, stuffing and roasted vegetables - I would start there.

Drank from my Duvel tulip

A - Pours a mahogany colour with off white foamy head that retains and laces well.

S - Sweet caramel, toffee , a hint of spice but slightly metallic on the nose

T - Similiar to the nose. Slightly sweet with some light faint floral hops with a rather dry bland boozy finish.

M - Medium bodied and medium carbonation

O - Definitely not as I expected, with the triple hopped now where to be seen. Drinkable but average overall.

Dark copper body with lively, small bubbles of carbonation and a thick, rocky, lasting head. Light, very malty aroma, primarily caramel. Lightly toasted grains with a more dominating hop bitterness with the flavor. Medium-heavy body; dry finish.

A pretty respectable red ale with excellent looks and a good if unremarkable taste. You may detect some rye crispness and pungency in the flavor, but otherwise it's the hop bitterness that is the strong point with this beverage.

good beer but lacking something - strong but not a big amount of flavours or complexity present

aroma: malt and chocolate predominate with some slight citrus - aroma not that strong though

taste: strong hop presence with citrus, pine and resin and a big amount of alcohol on palate coming through (not entirely surprising considering the alcohol content). As it warms/opens up it improves to include a lot more malt/chocolate to balance the hops

solid beer but better beers out there
