Dark brown with moderate tan foamy head with good retention. Light roasted malt and floral aroma. Taste follows with a light chocolate sweetness. Sharp biting feel.

“Black PA” makes less sense than “black IPA”. It’s really more like a slightly more hoppy porter with a strong burnt aftertaste. Ultimately, it’s pretty boring and the sharp feel is very distracting and unpleasant.

Pours into a standard pint glass more of a walnut brown than black with a nicely formed 1/2 finger lighter beige head,a few traces of lace were left behind as it settled quickly.Roast and leafy hops in the nose, while the aromas don't hit ya in the face they are nice enough.A pretty thin feel in the mouth almost watery in the back end, earthy and a little raw on the palate with mild roast, leafy hops come in late.Started out good but seemed to fizzle out once I actually started drinking it,many better ABA's out there to try.

Black pale ale, the ultimate in misnomers or oxymorons. Does pour black, not so much pale. Decent small 1/2" head on top, not much for retention or lacing. Aroma, neutral, flat, not much in the way of hops or anything else distinguishable.

Taste, bitter, chalky, not really hoppy, or pale. Not bad, not adventurous, just kind of there. Bitterness without hop taste, eh, gettin' oldberg you know what I mean? Thin enough body that it does distinguish itself from a porter at least, for awhile there, it just seemed nobody wanted to use the porter moniker, threw a little more bitterness in and called it a black ipa.

Glad I only bought 1, not really losing anything there, decently priced, but just a run of the mill beer during the wonderful craft beer explosion of quantity and quality.

Poured clear and dark red-brown in color with a towering mixed density head. The frothy/creamy head was very durable but so large as to suggest over-carbonation. Tasting left the impression that this medium-bodied sample was indeed a bit over carbonated.

The aroma was just as expected for a beer marketed as a black pale ale: ample notes of dark malts together with (piney and herbal) hops. The flavor was largely as the aroma suggested, but a bit disappointing in that the hops made the beer a bit too bitter in relation to other aspects of hoppy flavors. The finish, nonetheless, was rather good, particularly as the bitterness faded allowing more of the other hop flavors and malt to come to the fore.

O: good for style.

(Served in a Nonic)
A- This beer pours a jet black body with microbubbles trailing up the sides and a sticky oatmeal colored head that last a bit.

S- This beer has a musty herbal hops aroma but it otherwise pretty clean

T- The slightly pungent dark woody hops mellows into a slight tart hint in the finish. There is a soft black malt bitterness that blends with some dandelion hop flavors in the finish.

M- the medium mouthfeel has a slight slippery texture in the finish.

O- The mellow flavor is more pungent that other hop flavors and the roasted black malt flavor grows as the beer opens. The tartness gets a bit stronger as it opens up aswell.

From the twelve ounce bottle with the oxymoronic description of a "Black Pale Ale" into a tulip pint glass results in a dark body with ruby tints and a one inch head that is hanging around quite a while, sticky lacing clings to the side of the glass as the level drops. Yep, It's dark alrighty, but nice looking.
Aroma is floral hops that are somewhat subdued with a note of char, not overpowering in any direction but appealing.
Taste is astringent hop bitterness upfront with a mild malt backbone that ends in a slight roast. Pretty simple really, with a good balance of flavors, thirst quenching and slightly dry on the aftertaste makes this one a nice drinker.
Priced at about a buck a bottle this is a nice easy drinking beer with some interesting attributes, I will buy it again if very fresh, but I think the hops are going to be somewhat more fragile than normal with age. The bottle is dated (I think julian?)
Overall, very nice and tasty.

Pours a chestnutcolor with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Very good head retention & lacing

S: Dark fruit & roasted grain

T: Roasty grain, woody & grapefruitty hops with astringency up front. Leafy & woody hops mix with a charred grain bitterness with just bit of cocoa sweetness. Finishes roasty with slight sweetness & a little more astringcy

MF: Medium bodied with firm carbonation, skews way too bitter

A fairly mediocre Black ale, I would've Bridgeport would've done better than this

A- Dark brown, just short of black. Tan head- tons of carbonation with bubbles covering sides of glass and quickly cycling through head. Head does not persist, but thin layer over top does.

S- Sweet with light roasted malt smell. Medium bitter hop aroma.

T- Mild bitterness with slight chocolate malt notes before onrush of bitterness and slightly toasty aftertaste.

M- Medium-bodied and smooth. Carbonation isn't apparent, slight bitter afterfeel.

O- Good, but doesn't really justify why this is a black IPA. I'd like more dark malts in there.

Poured from the with a dark black color and a medium thick head.
Odor is pleasant with floral and green notes. Pine/ green is there for sure and it is noticeable.
Taste is a little disappointing. I would call it average. Pleasant and hoppy at the beginning, but ending with strong pine note. The end is not pleasant, at least for me. Woody as well.
Mouth feel is pretty nice. It is somewhat coating.
Overall, a nice looking beer with a disappointing finish.

Appearance: (4.0)
- Pours a rather murky dark brown.. not quite black. Off-white foamy finger of head settles to a thin blanket on top and some bubbly lace about the glass. Overall a decent looking brew.

Smell: (3.5)
- Has a fruity signature Bridgeport hop aroma.. a little pineapple, citrus, pine perfume along a light and subtle grainy aroma. Overall this smells like a slightly darker version of their standard IPA. Nice crispy notes.

Taste: (3.0)
- Roasty light grain, a little bready and biscuity.. but overall light and not so sweet or chocolatey. If my eyes were shut, I might not know this was a CDA. Hop flavors are nice, and certainly the signature zesty herbal pine and light citrus hops. Much like their standard IPA, and not far enough into the CDA realm. Steel kettle-like flavors in the belch.. seems like that may be their yeast which I get in a ton of their beers now, where I never used to back in the day.

Mouth Feel: (3.5)
- Overall this beer is well carbonated, and somewhat light bodied.. inching towards a nice medium body. Its a bit drying and cloying from the bitter hops, and leaves the mouth a bit parched as it should.

Overall: (3.5)
- The hop flavors are rather decent, and it's an easy drinker. But the malt just isn't there.. it is too much like their regular IPA. I would love a little more chocolate grainy malt along with all these hops. I hate to be overly critical, but I have been let down by the majority of their beers in the last 8 years or so. Don't know if I'd buy more of this one.

"Black 'Pale' Ale" .... really? Pours with a nice dark tan head... the brew is black with no light escaping.

Aromas are mainly piney hops with some background roast... hints of caramel or maybe even diacetyl.

Flavor seem thin throughout... slight roast quality is only bloomed by a hit of malt sweetness... the hop flavors are again pine, but pretty muted... the body is also light IMO.. easy drinking, but it doesn't really leave me wanting another anytime soon.

Happily can say there is no diacetyl... but overall, it is just too lacking on the palate or in the nose to say much more.

Dark cola brown, big two finger off white head... Very faint chocolate roasted malt in the nose. Taste is light hoppy/roasted malt... Mouthfeel is quite thin but they call this a black pale ale, a touch Oakey/ more bitter as the beer warms. Quite refreshing easy drinking for the style. If you like this style give this one a shot.

12 fl oz bottle served in a snifter, reviewed live:

A - Pours a nearly black color with a thin, just off white head of one finger. Retention is poor. Not sure about this one to begin with.

S - Light cream, grassy and floral hops notes, and some crystal malt. Surprisingly, I get no roasted or even toasted notes off this one. Mild strength.

T - Incredibly light toasted malt is masked by staled and bland grassy hops notes. It's a bit creamy, which doesn't play too well with the strong hops notes. It's simple, imbalanced, uninspired, and really not that good. It's a middle of the road IPA at best, and shouldn't claim otherwise.

M - Medium bodied, too thick, smooth and wet. Doesn't work well at all.

D - I'll avoid this one in the future, and I haven't been to impressed with the brewery as a whole. If imbalanced IPA's are your deal, you might like it.
