Pours out dark but more like root beer and it foams up like a root beer with a creamy white head. held up to light you get reddish/mahogany tones so its not black when held to light. When not held to light its a very dark brown. The smell indicates there are hops in there and there is a scent of cream...most likely from the malt. wow..this is an interestiing beer. There is a lot of hops up front and it is blended nice with the dark roasted malts but not as profound as you would think in a black hoppy beer. Without checking, they had to use cascade hops. this tastes like a very watered down cascadian dark ale...the 5.6% is obvious in the after taste which is tame and easy to drink. There is no burn you would get from a really alcoholic CDA or IPA. And there really is no citrus tones you may get in a pnw IPA or CDA. This is bitter with that very subtle roastyness. As it warmed, i let it sit for about 15 minutes..you get a hint of that creamy almost vanilla tone in the after taste..not bad at all. The mouthfeel is pretty light but not dry. Overall this is a good beer. I would give it a b-. Since this is a low abv, they did good with the flavor but its not a session beer. Its bitter but the bitterness does not linger. I would like to have a sample of it off draft to compare but I would not revisit this again. There are other dark hoppy beers on the market but for Bridgeport, I like it. I normally do not like Bridgeport for some odd reason. So for the fact that I like it shows that its worthy for any hop head to try. Even stout or porter lovers should give it a go. But it is lacking the malts that I want and its pretty thin. With that said, I am very happy to try this beer and I must admit, I am impressed and is better thenI thought it would be..but definately a b - maybe a c+ but this is more than an average beer.

(Served in a Nonic)
A- This beer pours a jet black body with microbubbles trailing up the sides and a sticky oatmeal colored head that last a bit.

S- This beer has a musty herbal hops aroma but it otherwise pretty clean

T- The slightly pungent dark woody hops mellows into a slight tart hint in the finish. There is a soft black malt bitterness that blends with some dandelion hop flavors in the finish.

M- the medium mouthfeel has a slight slippery texture in the finish.

O- The mellow flavor is more pungent that other hop flavors and the roasted black malt flavor grows as the beer opens. The tartness gets a bit stronger as it opens up aswell.

Poured in to a tulip. Somewhat translucent black body with hints of ruby. 1/4 finger head that faded quick.

Aroma was a bit citrusy, floral and hints of roasted malt. Nothing too complex, pretty straight forward.

Taste was a bit on the roasty/chocolatey side. Mild malty flavors, a bit bready. Citrus and grapefruit hop flavors that turn to a mellow bitterness.

Mouthfeel was light body, medium carb and crisp finish.

Could use a bit more malt and hop flavors.
