Pumpkin-orange body with a thick, lasting two-finger thick, fluffy head sitting on top; clinging rings of lacing on the pint glass. Malty sweet scents intertwine with rye spiciness; sorghum in there, too. Bitter hops merge with rye flavors for a decent taste bud treat. Medium-bodied, smooth, dry finish.

A fair little rye beer that goes down nicely. Nothing extraordinary, yet has enough character to warrant repeat visits...

Appearance: 2"+ beige head that leaves moderate lacing after slowly receding. Color is mostly clear copper, but there is some sediment in suspension. Moderate carbonation evident.
Aroma: fruit (plums?), rye, medium roasted malt, yeasty bread.
Mouthfeel: light to medium with a somewhat dry finish.
Flavor: Differs a bit from the aroma as the bitterness is more forward. There is some rye spice in the middle, but the hop bitterness dominates the finish with chocolate/cocoa flavor in the initial taste. The fruit that was so evident in the aroma is almost obscured in the taste.
Overall: very good but not great.

I decided to this as a tasting of a rye beer (this one) alongside a rye whiskey (I went with Bulleit 95% Rye).

The beer pours light amber with an off-white head.

The aroma is delightful with lots of fresh hops and some spicy rye notes.

The flavor is well-balanced, fairly sweet (sweeter than most rye beers I've had), with some spicy notes. Definitely a good amount of hops (maybe along the lines of an English Pale Ale) but the dominant note is the rye. Spicy with a tiny tinge of sourness.

Medium-full mouthfeel.

After enjoying half the bottle, I next turn to the Rye whiskey and pour a little bit. Many of the same rye notes but with the alcohol burn (of 90 proof whiskey). Fairly dry but with a tiniest hint of honey. Almost (but not quite) a scotch-like aroma, but without the peat.

OK, back to finish the beer.

I can still taste many of the rye notes (echoing that of the whiskey) but with more sweetness. Maybe some maple syrup? A little bit of herbs. A tiny bit of black pepper. Some jewish rye breadyness.

Overall I recommend this beer. My only regret is not buying two bottles. Next time I might try this one with a little bit of the Bulleit 95 rye whiskey added for extra fortification and ryeyishness.

Very small off white head slowly falls into a clear golden bronze colored beer.

Light aroma of mostly the rye with a bit of citrus hops sneaking in.

Light tasting rye aspects even less than the light aroma. Very light on the rye, I guess I know why they call it smooth ryed.

A very light dryish aftertaste with just a bit of the rye taste coming through with this light to medium bodied ale.

Just seems a little to smooth for my beer drinking tastes, I do like the ryeish taste it has I just wish it were more pronounced.

"Beer's a journey, not a destination. Each sip of Smooth Ryed's toasty malt flavor is worth savoring. With a oiund of centennial hops per barrel and a hint of spicy rye character, you're sure to enjoy the ride." Brewed in the style of a Rye Ale. Available as a winter seasonal.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served north of 60º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a sudsy foam head of a gold-tinged white consistency over a very orange body that is heavily filtered and crystal clear. Retention is above average, lacing is light and streaked. Carbonation is moderate and excited. Despite having a very clean, underwhelming body appearance, the majority of appearance features present themselves well. 3.75

(Smell) There is certainly a great deal of biscuity caramel, a fainter pepper and spice hint of rye grain and a nearly faded hop bitterness, there's some remaining fruit and floral notes, very little citrus and pine remaining, and a somewhat enjoyable, possibly uninvited faint fruity/cider-like yeast note revealed. Very clean, very simple. The balance is decent in the aroma, although a little more complexity would have been desirable, even for a "smooth" rye ale. 3.25

(Taste) The flavor continues with a very basic combination of pale, watery malts, with very little to no "toasted" character nor any substantial malt body, making this incredibly difficult to prescribe as a Rye Ale. Finishes slightly dry with a big smack of sharp ethanol and faded resiny hop bitterness, as if some necessary coverup to balance was completely nonexistent, or the yeast just went crazy. I could only hope that this is an old batch and that having this fresh would be a more enjoyable experience, but I can't find a date to confirm nor deny this. It is a good bit more unenjoyable than I had before predicted. 2.25

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick and perhaps, accurately as per the label, smooth with a touch of oiliness. Carbonation adds a bit of fuzz but not much else to benefit the beer. The main issue is body, which is low for a Rye Ale, and in this beer in particular, very light amongst all beers. Alcohol presence is thus very easy to find, especially on the harsh and dry bare-bones ethanol finish. 2.25

(Overall) I know this beer goes for a drinkable Rye Ale but it understated the rye far enough to make me question if it was actually an ingredient in this beer at all. I'd like to try this beer again but this generally negative experience makes me wary of chipping more money into the Bridgeport beer pot, especially after attempting to take on this beer. 2.75

Poured into a Perfect Pint:

A=Honey colored, slightly cloudy...darker than anticipated...one finger head lasted over a minute.

S=Faint honey and herbal undertones.

T=Whoa...much more bitter than anticipated; quite hoppy...sort of like an IPA with some tang and spice. After it warmed up a bit, it was a bit smoother--slightly creamy and herbal.

M=Rather light carbonation; medium to light body...aftertaste makes it hard to call a session.

O=I am not that familiar with the style and received this as a gift...I don't like the style enough to purchase it, and this beer didn't change my mind...still, if you like IPA's and rye beers, this one would be worth trying.

Picked this up for $0.99 as a single at a local liquor store. Figured I'd give it a try since I am a fan of Rye beers.

Poured 12 oz bottled into tulip glass with a nice inch and a half head that took it's time to settle and left some nice lacing on the glass. Color is a deep orangish / red.

Aroma is quite pleasant - getting caramel/biscuity and some citrus

Taste - a bit of a bitter hop flavor balanced out with some rye / malt. The after taste is somewhat unpleasant.

Mouthfeel - Medium Carbonation and body

Overall - Decent beer, nothing to write home about but at least trying for a dollar. Wouldn't pick up a sixer of this though
