Appearance: Large, dense, persistent tan head rides atop an obsidian body. Thick, glass-coating lace adorns the glass walls.

Aroma: Sweet, vinous alcohol dominates the aroma. Strong cherry notes and bitter cocoa are also present. Pleasant dark raisin aromas and roasted malt are also present.

Taste: The taste opens with strong roasted malt and prominent herbal hops. As the taste progresses, mild sour cherry notes vie with bitter cocoa, cold coffee and vinous alcohol. Towards the close, the roasted malt notes intensify, and the herbal hops ascend to a long, lingering, moderate bitterness, accompanied by a dry finish.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and quite full.

Drinkability/notes: Complex and appealing, well-suited to a cold winter's evening.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

I had this on-tap in an imperial pint glass at the Bridgeport pub in Portland. Boy, it sure looks like people didn't love this one in the bottle -- but I must say I quite liked the draft version.

Appearance: totally black with a nice thin layer of tan foam leaving a nice lace on the glass. A beautiful dark beer.

Smell: a sweetish aroma; lightly chocolatey and lightly fruity. The fruit is a bit nondescript, it doesn't scream "cherry"; though it is nice enough.

Taste: I like the flavor quite a lot. There's a good, rich, pie-cherry flavor with a sweet chocolate aftertaste. It tastes a bit like a cherry cordial, which really quite works for me. Good stuff.

Mouthfeel: medium-bodied with a light carbonation and a decent creaminess.

Overall: though it's a sweetish dessert-type beer, it tickles my fancy. I could see myself having a few of these.

This has one of the strangest scents I've ever encountered in a beer. Some kind of candy with plastic notes and Band-Aids, perfume and sewing machine oil. I'd call it engine room meets the lady's boudoir.

Taste is rather sweet with a woody, bitter tang. I admit there is some fruity flavor, though it seems scorched. Some herbal and dank notes, like a leaf mold cola. Plenty of roasted malt flavors, but they are overwhelmed by the charred bark taste. The woodiness sets the teeth on edge a little, and dries this out some toward the finish. Aftertaste is charcoal and really bitter chocolate.

Color is an attractive dark brown with a dark beige head that doesn't last long. While there is some spritz on the tongue the whole flavor and mouthfeel seems to flatten out.

22oz bottle at 41 F poured into a pair of chalices. 015 d-1 1251 is the bottle code.

Pours black, with a small head that dissipates to no head very quickly. Not a lot of active carbonation. Smell is muted, cherries and chocolate.

Taste has a bit of a cherry cola theme to it. It's flatter than that, though, and cherry cola doesn't have so much cocoa flavor. Pretty sweet.

Mouthfeel is smoothish. Overall, it's not bad. It's not great, either.

App. 3.25-pours very little head, about one finger that disappears quickly. Dark as night, some light shines through the edges
Smell-2.75. Cherry cola with some chocolate, skunky lager smell overwhelms.
Taste- 3. A very big disappointment being I'm a huge fan of stouts and especially chocolate stouts. Carbonation hits the front of the tongue, cherry cola and espresso flavor in the middle with an overwhelming amount of carbonation in the back of the throat.
Mouthfeel-2 the amount of carbonation is what really kills this one for me. Most chocolate stouts I've had have a fairly smooth mouthfeel and feel like silk going down. The amount of carbonation ruins any of the good stout flavors this beer should have.
Overall- this brewery has really yet to impress me. It lacks flavor and taste way too much like cherry coke. This tasted like a lager with some cherry notes.

Appearance- Pours up less than a finger of head which has very little retention. The head is a medium beige while the body is an almost opaque, dark chocolate black. There's a small hint of brown at the bottom of the glass in the light. Some lacing is left behind.

Nose- Much more than I expected from a beer with such average ratings. Good amount of chocolate that is followed by cocoa and roasted malts. The nose smooths out in the glass and shows milk chocolate, cream, and toffee. Maybe even honey. Slight cherry notes as well. Swirling reveals burnt roasted notes, hints of oak and smoke, some vanilla. This may be one of those beers that smells better than it tastes.

Taste- Starts off with a mix of cherry and chocolate that seems to turn quickly to generic cherry and cocoa tinged with burnt coffee notes and slight oak. Tiny bits of smoke but all this dissipates fairly rapidly. While the aroma is promising and the front of the flavor profile has a decent start, this beer pretty much collapses. It's very thin and has very little substance to it, reminding one of a chocolate, cherry soda. I'm not detecting any real flaws- this beer is simply left flat by its lack of body, fullness, and any hint of richness. Maybe some toffee notes but this has nowhere near the complexity of the nose and that is a shame. Pretty much just an average beer which I don't mind simply because it's a preferred style. I wasn't expecting much anyway.

Mouthfeel- This pretty much kills this beer. Slightly above light bodied with very little carbonation that still manages to have a zing. With a light syrup and stickiness to it.

Drinkability- Goes down pretty easy for a stout because it's so thin. No hint of alcohol but it's not worth the 5-6 bucks you'll pay for a bomber. There are plenty of better and cheaper stouts.

Overall- Average. No real flaws but this beer is a tease. If only the taste was comparable to the aroma. You can pass this one by- you aren't missing anything.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown black with a medium creamy tan head that goes to a thin film that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet grainy baking chocolate with some cherry.

The flavor is sweet chocolate malt with lots of tart cherries and light roast. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, decent sweet cherry chocolate beer.
