look: 3.25 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3 | feel: 3 | overall: 3

Appearance: moderate carbonation, 1/3 inch head, opaque, black in color

Smell: oat, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and light bourbon

Taste: oat, dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and light bourbon/vanilla on the finish

Mouthfeel: sweet and roasty, heavy-bodied, medium-low carbonation

Overall: This is an average roasty, coffee stout. The bourbon is faint if existent at all. I was expecting it to be a lot more pronounced. Not a bad beer, but nothing that really differentiates this from most other stouts. The original Ale is by far and away my favorite from this brewery.

Poured into snifter; jet black with a thin fizzy brown head that fades quickly into a thin ring of foam. Smells of roasted malt and coffee, with slight bitter chocolate and dark fruit. Not much barrel character in the smell; not getting any oak, and only a tiny hint of bourbon. To be fair, the only other BA stouts I've had are BCBS, Dragon's Milk, and Cerburus (Bourbon), and those were all very strong on the bourbon character. Taste is roasted malt and bitter coffee, a hint of baking chocolate, smoothing out into sweetness and a tiny ghost of bourbon. Finishes wet and relatively clean, with some lingering coffee and sweetness. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery for an imperial stout.
Overall it's a good stout, but I'd expect something called "Bourbon Barrel Stout" to taste like it had been in a bourbon barrel at some point.

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout, the ale has been selling like hot cakes for stores in Ohio...the sad thing is I can't figure out why. When I saw this version I still had to give it a go it mentions aged with Haitian coffee, pours pitch black with a fizzy light tan head. Aroma gives off the coffee notes with hints of vanilla, charred oak, and bourbon. The flavor however keeps it along the lines of a mediocre light fizzy stout that may have been aged in oak bourbon barrels but really doesn't have enough body to carry out the characteristics that the barrel has to offer, first of I don't believe this beer is 8% that is hidden way too well. Remains a bit one dimensional even watery on my palate, it finishes with some bourbon flavor charred oak and watered down bourbon that warms the gut just a bit after a few sips. Really all and all it's a beer I will never go back to the carbonation and textures fall flat on the palate, just poorly made beer put in bourbon barrels that's my final impression.

Lexington's crack at the stout looks to want to play; this one's heavy, very close to black but with some red highlights easing in the edges when struck by light. it's even got some viscosity to it. The brown head caps this beer nicely and rests there at one finger, depositing patches on the snifter as it recedes.
This beer smells like it wants to compete with the big stouts. There's a nice complexity and some layered depth to it. It's got a nice, well-maintained and workable sweetness off some roast that never goes acrid, a hint of toast, some meaty nuttiness, lots of coffee grounds, and an obvious barrel presence (vanilla, caramel, dark fruits, and a mild whiff of alcohol).
Roast, wood and creamy sweetness from the barrel balance strong notes of ground coffee in the taste as well as the aroma does. The barrel character is really drawn into this beer, as it takes the wood and creamy sweetness into itself. It verges on a little too much sweetness without a lot of char to counter it, but it stops in measure to work extremely well.
The body isn't particularly thick, about medium-full with the alcohol seeming to thin it a little. It's certainly recognizable as a stout, but on the lighter side for body. A bit of char edges into dryness, where just a touch of astringency hits after time. Still, it finishes smooth for the most part until then.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. 7/10/13 on the neck

A: Pours a very dark ruby brown appearing black in the glass. A small off white head fizzles to the sides fairly quickly.

S: Smells like a strong black coffee with fermented dark fruits and a touch of bourbon. Carmel and other sweetness comes to mind. Emphasis is on the coffee.

T: Comes off sweeter than I had anticipated, there is a stout in there but it doesnt appear to be very complex. Bourbon comes through only in the aftertaste.

M: Medium body that is a tad watery for the style. Warming in the aftertaste. Sweetness makes it a touch sticky but not bad.

Overall its not too offensive, worth a go round but not something I'd pickup on a regular basis.

I felt like I was drinking an iced coffee, with no ice. I had to double check the bottle to make sure it was what I thought it was. Just to make sure I drank the other 3 bottles in the 4 pack. I am now wired from the coffee in it and now desire something that resembles alcohol. I guess I got what I paid for in $6 for the 4 pack.
