Wasn't a huge fan of their Bourbon Barrel Ale, and I usually love beers aged in bourbon barrels, so hopefully the stout redeems it a bit.
Pours a smaller darker colored fizzy bubbly head covering that gets about an inch before fading semi quickly, light lacing, but nice legs on teh sides of the glass, pitch black beer.
Nose is interesting... quite nutty and coffee, a nice fresh nutty coffee that brings a nice creamy coffee aroma but not much of teh roast and burnt aromas, probably cold infused, mild caramel and dulche with that, very nice smooth coffee and aromatic. A hint of cocoa under that and perhaps a bit syrupy, light buttery toasty oak under that but no real bourbon. A quite nice base beer actually with the nutty smooth rich coffee, but a little lacking in the barrel.
Taste is a little less ambitious, the coffee is much more toned down, a little nutty and rich, little smooth, but fairly earthy too with a bit more coffee grinds like flavor, not as well immersed and looses that cold extraction like character, but still quite nutty. Not really roasty either, no burnt flavors at least, but a bit of a dark chocolate and baker's a bit, hint cocoa and mocha. Also more mild caramel, just a hint of sweetness, and a little creamy feel too, mild buttery oak with that too, faint hint of bourbon in the background but barely any. Booze brings a little warmth and hint esters. Finish is still a bit sweet, sticky, bit more creamy, mild bitterness more from dark malts and coffee than hops, bit more fresh coffee grinds, and caramel lingering, as well as some cocoa.
Mouth is fuller bod, little creamy and fluffy feeling, lighter carb, some warming booze.
Overall not bad, very little barrel overall, nice coffee addition, very nice coffee, decent base malt, but otherwise not much for it. It seems a bit boozier than it should too, and lacking carbonation. So decent but not great.
