12 oz. Bottle poured into a pint glass.

Alltech's Lexington Brewing Co. has recently concocted their first IPA. While it is easy to surmise that this was brewed in response to West Sixth's IPA – steadily growing its reputation as the staple beer from Lexington, overshadowing Alltech's own Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale – I'm trying to put that idea aside and appreciate this beer on its own two feet.

Pouring a clear, burnished golden color, this American IPA has a lingering foamy head that leaves behind rings of broken lacing. It appears to have more carbonation than the norm for the style. Quite the norm for the style, though maybe a little clearer than I prefer for the style.

This IPA is relatively mild and, while pleasant, doesn't have nearly the boldness and hop presence for which the style is known. The trademark citrus characteristics appear in the form of grapefruit and lemon zest, and there is a nice floral scent as well. Some grassy scents are in there as well as some caramel malt. While it smells okay, calling it an IPA is somewhat misleading – this smells more like an APA.

The first noticeable taste is that of some orange and lemon characteristic on the front of the tongue; I would describe as more zesty than juicy. A big caramel sweetness, slightly bready comes on the middle of the tongue. Alltech's IPA finishes dry with grassy and grapefruit bitterness, slightly astringent. It's satisfying and has a bit more hop presence on the flavor than I anticipated. It's rather well-balanced and perfectly drinkable, but it's not a mind-blowing IPA – I would go so far to say that it's a misnomer to call this an American IPA, as it has similarities to an English IPA.

Mouthfeel is this is fairly light with a zesty carbonation and a dry, bitter finish. Drinkable and quaffable for such a beer.

While it's good, it's not great. It's a solid example of the style but not the best available. I wouldn't drink this regularly, but if I need a “standard” IPA with dinner, this will do finely.

Nice pour, clear golden, two finger white head with decent retention.
Hop smell, mostly citrusy, a bit of pine and floral notes too.
Tastes of peach, sweet citrus and pine. Some extra lemon zestiness. Bitter grapefruit finish, dry but not too rough.
Light bodied, medium carbonation, easy to drink and easy to down a few of these in one night.
Refreshing, nothing incredible, but packs enough punch for the hop fans, without scaring off the opposite crowd.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Clear, copper gold in color, with a decent cap of airy white foam.
Aroma-Subtle citrus hop note.
Taste-Toasted malt, herbal hops. Flavors a bit muted and unbalanced, but not a bad brew by any means. Your basic middle-of-the-road IPA.
