look: 3.25 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance 3.25: Poured out a hazy, very light yellow. Opaque. Slight head with no lacing whatsoever.

Smell 3.25: Very subdued bouquet. It's difficult to smell anything beyond the honey/grain scent and even that is very low-level. Still, there is no harsh or distracting smell in the bouquet of this beer and that is a major plus.

Taste 3.5: Front is slightly tart with relatively no distinction other than this. Middle is light (regarding the weight in the mouth) and there are slight hints of barley sweetness and a very light noble hoppiness. Finish is slightly sweet with a very subdued grassiness and subtle adjunct taste that is probably from the kolsch yeast.

Mouthfeel 3.5: Light, fizzy and well within the style.

Overall 3.5: Bit of a mixed bag, but certainly not bad. This kolsch (where is my umlaut hot key?) is light, refreshing and enjoyable. In other words, a good representative of the style. Still, there is a certain taste emptiness inherent in this particular beer that is a style deviant. This beer would be excellent with food or for sessioning and I would recommend it for those activities. I would not, however, pay "handcrafted ale" prices (say, $8+ per six) for this beer just to try it. (1,215 characters)

look: 3.5 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.25

Appearance: 1 inch head, straw yellow in color, clear, high carbonation

Smell: light straw--very faint

Taste: straw, sugar, pilsner malt, and wheat

Mouthfeel: high carbonation, light bodied, sweet with light bitterness

Overall: When I have a kolsch I look for cleanliness, lightness, and a good smell. The beer meets two of the three, but the smell is so faint it takes away from the rest of the experience. This is odd because this brewery usually excels in providing excellent smelling beers. Not a bad beer, but I have had way better in the style. (554 characters)

12oz bottle, part of the rather inexpensive six-packs these are sold in, exclusively at the local liquor chain's outlets.

This beer pours a clear, very pale golden straw colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and mostly fizzy off-white head, which leaves little beyond a few specks of remote islet lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of bready, doughy pale malt, corn cereal, a not so subtle sour fruitiness, mineral water, and weak leafy, weedy, and grassy hops. The taste is more corny than grainy in its still-rising bready malt sweetness, the basic drupe fruitiness more or less pulling out of its skanky spiral, and the noble-leaning hops carrying on with their understated leafy, grassy and herbal character.

The carbonation is fairly sprightly in its tightly-wound frothiness, the body an adequate medium weight for the style, and a bit too tacky to be considered all that smooth. It finishes trending dry, the corniness becoming even more cereal like, and the fruitiness fading into obscurity.

I would imagine that this is made with the traditional ingredients, but every other sip or so, there's that Matrix-like reality shimmer, where the ghost of a typical adjunct lager comes a little too close to the surface. Grainy, fruity, and plainly hoppy, yeah, but only if you don't look too closely, or think too hard about it. (1,370 characters)

16 ounce can poured into a pint glass.

A - Poured out a cloudy yellow/orange with a strong lasting head and decent lacing.

S - Very fruity with some grains in the background.

T - Tart, fruity and some wine-like character.

M - Tangy but still a bit on the thin side.

O - My first Kolsch experience. If the BA description is accurate, this is a decent enough representation of the style. It just seems overall to be a bit "thin". Still, I wouldn't turn one of these down ice cold and will certainly drink the remaining 3 from the 4 pack I purchased. (552 characters)

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a very pale yellow color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, malts, grains. Taste is the same, grains and malts, some crispness, easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall a refreshing beer, but lacking any real punch. (275 characters)
