24oz can poured into a Samuel Smith pint glass on 6/19/11
Light caramel/orange color. Pretty east to see through save the massive numbers of clinging bubbles. Two fingers of poofy, porous foam sets right to eating away at itself. Thin retention. Hardly any lace. Nothing by the half way mark.
The aroma is rather boring and not particularly pleasant. Cereal grains and watery caramel undertones. A brief foray into vegetal territory but that notion subsides. Something akin to a metallic hop twinge.
Doesn't taste quite as bad as it smells, but it isn't great. Caramel has a better showing and mixes with the grains. It's a smooth, almost buttery caramel. Backing of breads and hints of dough. Not much for hops save for a slight nip on the finish.
Medium feel is underscored by the thickness imparted by the caramel and breadiness. Moderate carbonation; moving but hardly over done. The finish is clustered and boasts a not-so-enjoyable coating feel.
I had the good fortune, if you will, to sip on this right from the bottle the last time my band played the Southgate House. I've wanted to give it a fair shake since. Sure, it's nothing great but I don't find too much going on that's terrible.

This is a GREAT lager. I am a lager fan and think that this is the true German brewing tradition of Ohio. This is my grocery beer and am very excited that I can hop down to my local Ingles in Knoxville and pick it up.
It does pour very nice and has a great head... but, I am a bottle person on this one. It is an easy drinking lager, not too heavy, not too light. Perfect with meals and anytime really.
