Fuzzy ochre with blurry apricot trim. It looks like this will be one of those IPAs that favor caramel malt over pale. In spite of an increasingly elevated pour, the orange-ecru cap is only one finger in size. It makes up for it by being heavily creamy and by laying down a wide band of attractive lace... that really looks like lace.
As expected, there's plenty of caramel in the nose. Actually, the beer does smell more like an EIPA than an AIPA; and it's not just the Cutty Sark (or whatever sort of sailing vessel that is) on the label. The top end is occupied by citric fruity hops that could be American or could be Fuggles, it's hard to say.
Six Rivers IPA is definitely not among the top IPAs in the state of California, that much is certain. Having said that, it's a decent effort that is a few well-chosen tweaks away from being pretty good. I was going to say 'from being respectable', but it's already there.
First impressions: not enough barley, too much sourness, better than decent hop flavor. The lack of malt is noted most acutely in the mouthfeel, not the flavor profile. Each gulp delivers English toffee, orange marmalade on lightly toasted bread, unripe fruit and tea leaves. It's all semi-pleasant without being memorable.
The mouthfeel is on the thin side for an APA. Trouble is, this is a 7.2% IPA. Ain't no way this sucker is making the trip to Bombay intact. Again, more malt is needed. The bubbles are fine.
Six Rivers Brewery IPA needs a name change and a recipe change, both to something more exciting. My sense is that there's a pretty good India pale ale in here somewhere. Bottom line: not quite shipshape, but close.

On tap at The Bistro in Hayward. Flat hazy amber appearance, low carbonation and no head.
Tons of diacetyl in the aroma, this is incredibly buttery. It has an off-putting ambiguous fruitiness as well, somewhat tart in character, along with crystal malt richness. Hops are barely noticed beneath it all.
It tastes fruity and faintly tart up front, with herbal hop bitterness and buttery slickness following. There's a strong caramelized malt flavor supporting it all, and not nearly enough hop flavor to provide any semblance of balance. This one needs some work, not an enjoyable beer at all.

Pours dark amber with a thin off-white head. Broken lacing sticks.
The smell is caramel/toffee forward with pine and hint of citrus in the back.
The taste is of caramel and pine with some citrus and doughy notes and fruity/peppery alcohol in the finish.
Medium-bodied with medium carbonation. Texture is a bit raw.
This is more of a stronger amber if you ask me. Style aside the caramel/toffee masks the brightness of the hops. There is no freshness date, but liquid solutions (second time I've ordered from them) has been on-target with freshness. And, I wasn't surprised that it was caramel-malt forward from the color of it. Hops are there, and bitterness shows in the finish, but the malt character and alcohol showing just a bit too much even for abv put a dent in the hoppy character. It is listed here as an English IPA, but it doesn't have an English character per se, IMO. It's just mildly hopped (or, rather, masked). Not "off" or "inoffensive", just rather bland, especially for a West Coast IPA.

12 oz. bottle, procured at the Hi-Times Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA.
A: Dark amber red with thick white head which lasts a long time.
S: Smells of piney hops, a lot of grapefruit as well.
T: Weak, somewhat muted tastes of hops, a good bit of malt in the back.
M: Smooth, a bit watery, would like a little more robustness.
D: OK, not a really good IPA, but drinkable, pretty average.

01/29/09- Purchased at Mollie Stones in Burlingame, CA.
Presentation- 12oz bottle with no freshness info. Poured into a random pint glass.
Appearance- Unfiltered deep caramel colored pour. Seems kinda lifeless at the beginning of the pour, but perks up and leaves a 1/4 inch head, but really no real lacing at all.
Smell- Nice sugary fruity nose. Kinda like a sugar coated tangerine. Definite caramel sugary malt nose as well.
Taste- Noticed the english style malted flavor. Nice and caramely, almost chewy. Hops are fruited, sugary and pretty bitter. More malted than hopped, but the bitter flavor makes you think otherwise.
Mouthfeel- Medium to lower carbonation level. Thicker for an IPA, but not really heavy. Lasting and lingering light bitter aftertaste.
Drinkability- Not bad, for and English IPA pretty darn good. Not sure why all the sub par reviews. Found this brew perfectly fine and drinkable. Especialy for a brewery known for it's cider.

Has a dark copper kind of color going on here, a little darker than your average ipa. Thin head. Aroma wasn't hoppy. Disappointing.
Taste, hey cool, I guess I have to talk about the malt bill, because the hopping is almost non existant. And I get it, its an English IPA made in CA, but even for the style guidelines, this one is disappointing. The bitterness tastes like it comes from roasting of the malt moreso than any hop character. The metallic toasted malt flavor isn't doing me anything in the mouthfeel.
Was glad to finish this one. Not quite drainpour territory, but not impressive in the least either.

On tap at the brewpub.
A: attractive amber-orange color; clear with a durable off-white head and patterned sticky lacing.
Aroma: herbal/earthy hops and faint bisquits.
Flavor: Moderately bitter; woody; moderately hoppy, fiting the English IPA style.
Feel: near medium body; medium carbonation.
O: a good English-style IPA.

Super clouded light coppery color with deep golden highlights along the edges with some hops bits floating around within and a cap of thin off-white tight foam. Lacing minimal in miniscule spots and a few thicker strings.
Aroma is pleasant of chips of dry wood with a few touches of tropical fruits lending pineapple & mandorine orange with a caramel drizzling of malts underneath, overall a sweeter, well rounded, kinda fruity, dry, lightly woody, pleasingly soft yet welcoming nose.
Taste is quite good too, not overly complex, good sense of wood characteristics mixing with a bit of fruits that bring some dulled grapefruit, lemon, and melon husk, yet the bittering takes both pine wood and grapefruit along for the ride where it stakes claim along a dryish pale malt backbone. It brings a favorable drying across the palate to end this nice IPA into a heavy-handed hop-sided scale. Its not overly hoppy but its hoppy enough with just the right amount of bittering effects taking place here and there, but seems to come through mostly in the finish.
Feel is medium bodied with a solid stated hop bite with just enough kick and pleasant mildness of drying all the way through. A nice drinkin' IPA, just enough hop fronting this brigade!

This beer pours a cloudy amber color. The head is half an inch in height, and recedes quickly into minimal lacing. The aroma is of butterscotch. There might be something else there, but if there is it is covered up by all of the butterscotch. The taste is even stronger in the butterscotch realm than the aroma. It is awful, and offensive. I really wish BeerAdvocate's ratings allowed me to give it a negative score, because this beer's taste truly deserves one. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with virtually no carbonation, and a chewy texture. Overall, this is one of the worst beers I've ever tasted. This is the kind of beer I would wish upon my enemies.

Pours a hazy amber color with a nice creamy white head, nice lacing too.
Aromas are a little mild, but pleasant. Some hard candy notes and citrus hops.
Taste is clean, and a little mild. Caramel malts up front, hints of brewed tea, and a light mineral hop bite on the finish. I can see why this is categorizes as more of an English Style IPA. It seems to fit more there.
Mouthfeel is pretty good, well carbonated, maybe a touch to thin though.
Drinkability is good. I like this beer, and I think if you don't compare it to the "West Coast IPA" then this beer will be more appreciated for what it is. And that's a tasty beer that falls more towards the English Style IPA.

Tap@Six Rivers, May 2004. Tinny, rusty, sharp flavoured pale ale. Hoppy as i was expecting (lychee,pine etc...). I just found it a bit ugly, more of a rough alcoholic bitterness, rather a softly hoppy aromatic bitterness, that you find in so many Pacific North West IPA's.

Bottle provided by the Brewer's Association as a reward for some volunteer efforts for the upcoming 2006 GABF. I suspect that this bottle was left-over from the 2005 GABF is likely about a year old. Pours a half finger caramel head over a cloudy murky copper-brown liquid. Smells piney hops that are woody dry and tempered with oranges. Caramel is present, but quite modest. A touch of butterscotch and pineapple.
Tastes woody and piney hoppy with moderate hop bitterness. Malt sweet plays a nice supporting role and the finish was a pleasing estery. There is a bit of sherry-like oxidation that mixes with the pine hop flavor. Stronger and it would be unpleasant, but at this level it adds an interesting dimension. Halfway through the glass, I find the hops have a strong orange and tangerine flavor, as well as a bit of a dry tangy character (mango?). Mouthfeel is medium with some dextrinous qualities. Modest carbonation forms sharp tiny bubbles on the tastebuds.
This beer tastes like a mini american barleywine that's been aged a few years. Piney and sherry, but still sweet and fruity.

This is (was, reviewing from notes) one of the most peculiar ipas I've ever had, definitely an "English" style ipa. my notes read:
"brown in color, smells of citrus hops...whoa, very different, initial taste, oddly sweet... hints of caramel and toffee!! (what?! in an ipa!?) well balanced but different bitterness. aftertaste...smokey toffee taste, this beer blows my mind! reminds me more of a brown ale but still very DELISH!"

appearance - a dark tangerine in color, edges fading to yellow. small head with great lacing and nice activity
smell - caramel malts, biscuity malts, orange peel, floral, hops
taste - much the same with biscuit and hops coming in stronger...bitterness isnt the nicest
mouthfeel - cloying which is odd, quite sticky, good carbonation and good body but not very nice cloying.

Hazy amber with an off-white modest head and a good amount of lacings.
Aroma is sweet, floral.
Taste is rich bitter hops, some leather, smooth malts.
Mouthfeel is average for the style.
Drinkability is marginal due to the 7.2 abv.
Overall a different hop taste than the usual West Coast IPA. Interesting.

Thanks again to Flexabull for sending me this want. I had some guy sitting next to be at the Portsmouth brewery talking this one up so I had to give it a try. Bottle poured into a shaker pint produced a good two finger white head that lasted a while and laced the sides of the glass. The brew had a hazy amber color to it.
Surprisingly this brew was extremely balanced for a west coat IPA, (both in flavor and aromas') but it is very true to the style. So I am impressed by it. The only ding I will hand out, is the mouthfeel is a tad light for me. Everything else is spot on for the style.
This brew is a great English IPA. Awesome to drink, and you could easily drink mass quantities of it without getting your taste buds fatigued from the hop's. Thanks again Paul this one was well worth the wait.

A: surprisingly deep colored pour of burnt orange and hazy reddish yellows, close to amber. The head boasts a dark dingy cream color with a few solid sheets and blobs of lace connected around and about
S: the nose has a different aroma. Caramel is by and far one of the stronger whiffs with some faint roasted maltiness. Otherwise, my nose gathers smells of sugary lemons and soft metallic whiffs
T: well, this is to bad. First and foremost, a lemon sourness engulfs the tongue and is the defining character of this beer. Caramel sweetness is at every sip with just a hint of earthy hopped bitterness. Oh, and by the way, where are the malts?
This beer is a rather bland British type of IPA, if that is what they are going for? That sourness continues to linger and a new burnt leathery character develops on the tongue, not a fan
M: the body has some nice features with a medium style and feel. The carbonation is nice and tickles the tongue, close to creamy down the chugger
D: if anything they need to get some more hop notes and most importantly a hefty dose of malts. I find that lemon sourness a damper on the overall flavor. I find this one somewhere in between a wounded American IPA and a hobbling English IPA.
Another note, alcohol is nicely hidden
