Molson Dry 6.5 Coldshots
250 ml can, coded "F26427 10:35"
$1.49 Canadien @ Intermarche 8160, 850 rue St-Jean, Quebec, Qc

Cute little can! Obviously a marketing gimmick. It makes it easier to conceal your beer. OK, moving forward I'm quite sure that Molson Dry 10.1, 8.5, 6.5, and the regular are all the same high gravity beer just watered down to the strength needed for said product. This one then is just 1% more alcohol than the regular Molson Dry. I don't find the alcohol, but I do find it a little bit more balanced. I haven't yet tasted the 8.5 yet, but given a choice between the regular and this the choice is obvious. On the other hand, it's still just an average beer.

You best unretire this bad motherfucker 'cus Cold Shots is in every Montreal convenience store I stopped in.

From what I gather, this beer is pretty explicitly marketed as something that high schoolers are supposed to sneak into class. A can fits easily in a decent sized boot, and from a glance--should, say, some Johnny Law or Suzie "No Fun" McTeacherpants espy you--it looks like an energy drink can.

As for the beer--not bad, surprisingly. I was bracing myself for something along the lines of a shitty American malt liquor, but the gravity just ain't high enough to break into any really bad nodes of metal or poison grain. It's dull, certainly, but not without beeriness.

Not much taste here, a bit of lace. Mouthfeel: well it bothers my teeth. Piss yellow colour. Beer cheese smell. Can drink a quarter cup. Too carbonated, fizzy, Corny, watery, boring, avoid. Fits in a pocket gimmick. What hs Molson done for real beer drinkers?

Presentation: Molson Dry Cold Shot, 250ml can, 6,5%ABV

Appearance: Pale straw color. No head. It seems to have been opmitized for fast drinking.

Smell: Fruity. The best part of this beer.

Taste: High carbonated sugar + alcohol. More than half-way between beer and pop.

Mouthfeel: High carbonated like a soda.

Drinkability: I always thought these cans were pure marketing tricks for trendy kids, but it was not that bad. I had this one after work. That's definetely not an exceptionnal brew, but I will have this one rather than a Ex Light or a Boomerang.

When I typed in "Cold Shots" to review this I initially typed in "shits." And this is perhaps apt.

Poured into a French bistro glass. Very little head. Corn yellow. Smell? Pissy hops, if you can even pick that up. Tastes of water and a touch of hops. Bland corn mash. Blah. Not enough to bring me back to the days of 40 ozs, but it really does not taste like anything.

Water. This is like drinking water. Drinkable, if you like to drink to get drunk. If not, water or soda is a good alternative.

The can makes a good airrifle target.

Cute 250ml Kiddy cans ( hide ‘em in yer jeans from teacher)…noxious sweet kiddy taste (Hides the alcohol well that you intend to get gooned on)_….seems like another winning marketing device for Molson who have staked out the “kiddy” market for their own.

Nothing special or note worthy about this beverage (I say beverage because it has as little in common with real beer as a soft drink) with the exception of warnings on the can to serve extremely chilled…..I can see my gag reflex kicking in if I had to drink this Popsicle-sweet green beer at room temp. Bland pale yellow appeance..no head or aromas to speak of and a sweet corn taste devoid of hops with an indescribably annoying sweet after taste (corn syrup mixed with stale chip oil is the closest I can come in description)

The typical mega brewer let down in the taste department is not the real story here. I think the mindset behind the kiddy kan (250ml) the 6% ABV and the 4-pack is a priceless statement on the devolution of mass Canadian beer marketing politics. They obviously see the kiddies (teens and arrested development twenty-somethings as the main market for their mass produced slop but they must salve their federal nannies who pay lip service to the tragedy of teen addictions and auto deaths (Yet the feds profit handsomely from the arrangement via booze tax and monopoly alcohol sales) So they show “good corporate citizenship” by packaging their little kiddy alcohol bombers in small 2 gulp cans and 4-packs (and sell more units for teens hungry to get gooned on this wobbly pop)……classic modern Canadian compromise of a once proud brewing tradition.

If you guzzle 8 of these buzz bombs before the Averil concert try not to yak on your crew of fall off something high or wet the bed when you pass out….let’s be careful eh?…drink a lot but don’t blame us eh?
