I used to drink this stuff by the gallon back in school, for a while with the misunderstanding that it was actually from a microbrewery, or at least one owned by Molson. A friend of mine who used to work for Molson told me that Rickard's Red was just Canadian with some caramel flavoring tossed in, but I wasn't inclined to believe him. Years later, let's have a closer look-see.
A 20oz pint of this arrives to my table, and appears a clear, dark orange brick tinted amber colour, with one thin finger of wispy, soapy dirty white head, which leaves a ring of drooping hedge lace around the glass as things quickly subside.
It smells of barely sweet caramel syrup, stale indiscriminate fruit, a bit of warm plastic, and some mildly skunky earthy, weedy hops. The taste is more weirdly under-sweetened (perhaps my 'expectations' are too high) grainy pale malt and corn mash, with a thin caramel essence wrapped around it, like a Dairy Queen dip, a slight wet stone flintiness, and very tame musty, dead floral hops.
The carbonation is quite reserved, the body on the far lee side of medium weight, and more or less smooth, I guess. It finishes off-dry, the sweet (can I call it an adjunct?) caramel flavouring duly lingering, amongst some niggling, but still faint bitter singed earthy hops.
Well, given this re-acquaintance with Molson (for posterity, I say to myself), I think my friend was right. This sure tastes like their flagship middling-to-low lager, all dressed up with a fair dose of caramel flavoring. Ok when the options at the bar are limited, but, nostalgia aside, nothing at all here to get excited about either.

Picked this up for just a buck at the House of 1,000 beers. I am going to try and not let the fact this is a coors product sway my review.
A - As expected the 1/4 inch of head fizzes out rather quickly in this on with just a thin layer remaining. The color is quite a deep amber brown color.
S - Mildly skunky and lager like with very little hops or sweet malts I can detect.
T - A very interesting bit of biscuit like malts, leading to a touch of pilsner like hops, and it finishes rather tame with no noticeable metallic twang. Not bad.
M - Light to medium pretty big body for the BMC boys.
Overall its a pretty good beer easy to drink but not really worth picking up unless you can equally find it for a dollar.

Had a pint on tap at a Calgary neighborhood pub, following another pint of its white stable mate. Was considering an attempt at the whole Rickard's rainbow but perhaps fortunately there were only the two most common options. This red lager is an attractive amber red hue, more red than brown, and is highly carbonated. As is so often the case with decent but not earth-shatteringly good macrobrews, the aroma is not unpleasant but is faint and takes some work to discern: I get some caramel, red fruit, and some citrus hop notes against a toasty malt backbone but the whole thing is downplayed. Taste was astonishingly fruity in this example, a bright sweet cherry gum flavor along with another form of rounded corny sweetness, bramble fruits, and some subdued caramel that follows the nose. Some tangy spice accompanies a fairly watery body and a minimally bitter finish with metallic, cardboard, and sour apple notes, although frankly I have tasted worse faults in micro-brewed red/amber ales. Other examples I have tried had a dry nut character. There's some technical proficiency here but little true artistry unless one deems the emphasis on fruit and medicinal notes to be a unique feature of this particular exemplar. Personally, I'd like more caramel/crystal malt and hops to provide balance. Color me conservative.

Re-Review since I figured I might as well write something about a beer I've been drinking for years. 473 ml can from LCBO as part of taster's pack (to do a review). Served cold into a pint glass.
Appearance - Transparent reddish brown colored beer spilled into the glass with some bubbles present and 3+ fingers of off-white head that only receded somewhat quickly. Head was rocky and left some lacing. Looks particularly inviting given the recent weather here.
Smell - Slight malts, maybe the faint sweetness of maple syrup or caramel and a slight hop bite in there too. Most of the scents are subdued. There is a metallicness in the nose too, that is not really offputting, but still there. The farther into the glass you get the beer becomes more bready smelling and a faint whiff of alcohol is present too.
Taste - Similar to the nose, again rather subdued with a little bit more bitterness on the back end but finishes smooth.
Mouthfeel - A little thin, but obviously any sip with part of the aforementioned tremendous head gives a creamier feel. Thins out considerably and becomes a good thirst quencher. Carbonation is moderate, but the elements of this beer make it a better choice in winter as opposed to summer.
Overall - Good offering from Rickard's and not a bad mass-produced red lager, however slightly inferior to its direct competition being the offering at Alexander Keith's. Overall not something I'm likely to enjoy regularly, but any trip to a chain restaurant with limited beer selection here in Canada means that this becomes a viable option.
