341ml bottle, a single yanked from the local chain store remainder bin, so soon on the heels of this beer's release in our fair province. At least Molson is making a lemonade flavoured beer, rather than just a half-beer, half-lemonade blend. Just sayin'. And since when did Rickard's have a 'premium' lager?

This beer pours a hazy, very pale golden straw colour, with two fingers of thin, fizzy dirty white head, which settles oh so very quickly, leaving the barest of bacterial specks of lace around the glass.

It smells of big-brand lemonade, lemon Jolly Ranchers, lemon meringue pie, and two week-old lemon mush. The taste is a much lessened, generic lemon juice, wan pale malt, a soft-drink alluding fake lime essence, and little else beyond a pithy, weak-ass mustiness.

The carbonation is pretty well sublimated, the body medium-light in weight, and a bit too tacky to be considered smooth by any metric. It finishes off-dry, and fruity, like a stale dollar store lemon-lime soda.

Well, at least this has a few beer-like aspects, unlike those Euro-pops currently wetting the panties of boys and girls alike in Alberta liquor stores, now that winter has loosened its hold on all of us. Unfortunately, that beer is Molson Canadian - as I hardly suspect that the Rickard's brand has been given the resources to develop a wholly different lager for this purpose.

Can: Poured a super light yellow color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention. Aroma of lightly sweet adjunct with light lemonade notes. Taste is a mix of bland adjunct notes with some light lemonade notes. Body is really light with great carbonation. I still can’t believe a shandy is now back in Canada but still quite a disappointment.

473 mL can from TBS. Presumably this is either the spring or summer seasonal Rickard's release, following in the footsteps of their Cardigan and Oakhouse. I've never been terribly impressed with any of the shandies I've tried previously, and the brewer doesn't really instill any confidence in me... but tickers gonna tick.

Pours a hazy straw yellow colour, generating nearly two fingers' worth of fizzy, foamy, bone-white head that fizzles away completely over the next few minutes. It leaves no remnants in its wake, save for a thin collar rimming the glass, and a scant film on the surface. One thing I will say is that the aroma jumped out at me as soon as I opened the can, but it's about as complex as I'd expect a lemon-flavoured beer from Molson to be (i.e. not very). Lots of tart lemony notes, with a hint of lime-ade, and basically nothing else to back the citrus up. I won't lie - I like the smell, but it is absolutely one-dimensional.

The same could be said of the flavour, actually. It's not bad, per se, but it's certainly bland and diluted as far as fruit beers go. The lemon citrus flavour is the dominant aspect (obviously), providing a gentle tartness that is balanced with a light sugary sweetness. The 'beer-y' traits are a bit more prominent here than on the nose; unfortunately the pale malt and corn notes that come through are barely interesting enough to be worth noting. The finish is slightly tart. Thin-bodied and extremely watery/diluted, with fairly intense carbonation that prickles the tongue from sip to swallow. Very easy to drink because of its lightness and watery nature.

Final Grade: 2.74, an unimpressive C-. I've complained about shandies going overboard with the lemon tartness before, but Rickard's Shandy is sort of the exact opposite - it just comes across as very diluted, which I suppose is less offensive to the taste buds, but it definitely isn't any more interesting. A light, easy-drinking fruit beer that would probably be more appealing on a patio during a hot summer's day, rather than indoors on a rainy April day. It's better than Waterloo's Radlermass (do they even make that stuff anymore?), but I'd reach for a Mill St. Lemon Tea Ale long before considering a repurchase of this one. This is a beer you can easily skip without missing out on much.

A - Pours a hazy pale straw colour, thin layer of head with no retention or lacing.

S - Sweet lemonade with only a hint of bready malts.

T - Lemonade continues to dominate, with the mild bready malts coming through on the finish, only to be overpowered again by the lemon notes.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and wet.

O - My first shandy and I found it oddly refreshing. That being said, if someone told me I was drinking a lemonade cooler I would be hard pressed to argue the presence of any traces of beer. I would drink this on a patio, but I wouldn't try to pass it off as beer, it's a cooler without the sugar. I would suspect this is on par for the style, but it's nothing worth writing home about.

341ml bottle poured into pint glass 14/4/13

A slight chill haze in a straw yellow liquid, lots of bubbles but just a short lived noisy finger of foam that leaves no lace

S smells like a yellow sucker, sprite and just a little macro lager, very straightforward but not offensive

T mimics the nose, slightly less yellow sucker and slightly more sprite

M pop like, over carbonated and quite thin

O basic stuff and hard to even tell its beer, I don't dislike it but if someone passed this to me I might think its a cocktail, not a big "beer" presence with this one

I could see my wife liking this on a hot day, not very beery but somewhat refreshing and drinkable
