The place has a pretty laid back vibe and gets fairly busy after work on Fridays (the only days that I have visited). The crowd is mostly young professionals with a lot of medical students from the Wake Forest Medical School which is just up the hill. The interior is a huge U-shaped bar with lots of seating along it as well as some small tables along the sides. There is also a pretty decent sized patio with outdoor seating which was really nice on an early fall/late summer evening.
Beers were well poured with a proper amount of head, tasted fresh, and at a proper temperature - glasses were not frosted and the beers were not too cold. As an interesting side note, in addition to using the proper type of glassware all of the beers (i and the guests I was with) served were in glasses that matched the breweries the beers were from... Felt almost a little European in that respect.
The service was spotty - sometimes they were stopping by frequently and checking on if you were okay or needed a refill and other times it was near impossible to flag them down. The servers did seem to know the product though - all were familiar with all of the beers on tap and did a good job describing them and making recommendations (I heard numerous people come up to the bar and ask which pumpkin beers were good and heard the bartenders ask what other beers they enjoy before making a recommendation).
I thought the selection was pretty good - they had about 20 taps of US craft and a couple of taps of standard imports (Guinness and Stella). The beers represented smaller craft breweries for the most part and there were a decent number of local and regional breweries represented.
I really enjoyed the food that I had... they do a great job on the burgers (and almost everyone sitting around me at the bar ordered burgers as well).
Prices were pretty good here and they have some kind of special beer pricing each day of the week - Fridays were $1 off all seasonals. Definitely competitive for this market.

A: Interesting setup with the bar. There are seats everywhere, as well as a nice patio, but if its getting crowded after work on a friday, you might feel like leaving.
Q: Really great stuff here.
Service: Sometimes the service got slow, but nothing to deter me from going there again.
Selection: I may be a newbie in being impressed by this, but there's always a nitro tap of guinness & duck-rabbit stout. Then there's at least 15 or so other great selections from the east coast & southeast. A real treat, folks.
Food: standard bar grub, but its good.
Value: No complaints. The price is right. I'd pay $5 any day for a fresh nitro-tapped duck/rabbit stout.
Overall: I had a summer internship in NC, and of all the places I frequented, this was my favorite. Will make a point of coming back here.

First Street Draught House has had one of the better tap lists in Winston-Salem for years, but the quality has really improved over the past three years under a new owner. There is always a good representation of NC breweries including Big Boss, Lonerider, Mother Earth, Natty Green's, Duck Rabbit and Highland. Other craft handles include Founders, Sweetwater, Bells, Great Divide and more. They now have a Firkin night once a month, most recently Great Divide Fresh Hop. The food is good as well; they serve lunch, dinner, and late night.

First, I love the shape of this bar. It is one big O and is just a continious bar the whole way around with tables attached to it.
There is a lot of beer on tap. A nice variety of ales to stouts with just a few lagers.
Our bartender was working alone and we did sit empty a couple times but not for very long. The bar was pretty full for a Sunday but the Olympics were on and everyone seemed to be watching that. Nice flat screen Tvs, great picture and can be seen from any seat in the place.
The menu is typical bar food with cafe touches. Cafe ingrediants like: portabella mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, basil mayo etc.
The food is nice looking on the plate, hot and tasty. My husband and I always enjoy everything we order.

This is one of my favorite places in town! They have great food and a great draught selection. They have alot of my favorite local brews on tap [Natty Greene's, Red Oak, Highland Gaelic, Battlefield Bock, etc.], as well as a good not-so-local selection [Magic Hat, Terrapin, etc.]. They have Stella, Hook and Ladder, Sierra Nevada, Newcastle, SA, Rogue Dead Guy, and some other staples. The service is not always the quickest, but they treat you right and are knowledgeable about their brews. There food is excellent, as I have yet to get something I'm not pleased with. They tend to class it up a bit at night with the martini-crowd present, but not so much that I could be uncomfortable. Overall, a great place that I would highly recommend to anyone!

This was the first time I had ever been to First Street I had no idea that Winston had such a kick ass beer bar.Driving up and walkin in it looks more like a diner than anything it has a big wrap around black bar with around 15 taps situates at different areas of the bar.Beers that really stood out on draft included Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale,the hard to find Highland Black Mocha Stout,Brideport IPA,and a host of many others that I just cant remember to be honest. The bartender was pretty cool held a decent conversation with us and held is own talkin beer.A chill relaxed place and a place I will look for much more when in town.

I got turned onto this place when I heard they had Cottonwood's Pumpkin Ale on tap, and it's a real treat to have it on tap every fall. Unfortunately it never lasts long (2 months average, I'd guess). Beyond that, their beer selection is decent. I've had Spaten Optimator, Hoegaarden and Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale there, among others. They tend to lean toward the English imports, but their selection does change from time to time. Selection is nothing outlandish, but you'll always find something to your taste.
Haven't had a less-than-excellent meal there, the nachos are great, the fried veggies even better.
Service is always good, though when they get busy the bartender-to-customer ratio is way off. You have to be aggressive to get their attention at peak times. But the employees always seem to know their beer, at least the ones I've been served by.
Excellent decor, classy but you'd never be underdressed in a t-shirt. And it's cool that they offer outdoor seating, which I always prefer.
All in all, a good place to find some good beers and great food in Winston-Salem. Maybe now that the alcohol limit was lifted in NC they'll start bringing in some heavy-hitters.

Love the retro design and the sharp decorating. First Street is a great place to get a local micro on tap in the Winston area; I don't know how many fall nights I spent last year watching baseball and drinking Cottonwood Pumpkin Spice, which might be indicative of just how much pumpkin spice I drank. The service can be a little slow, but most of the food I've tried has been really tasty. The only real downside is that it's a little small and can get somewhat testy trying to find a seat at the bar or flag down a bartender. Definitely my favorite Winston-Salem bar.

Great selection of 20+ draught beers. The atmosphere is relaxed and lively. The food is a little above average bar food. Good selection of sandwiches and entres to go with some great beer. One of, if not the largest selection of beers on draught in Winston Salem area. Good mix of college students and locals. In the shadow of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and minutes from downtown.
