Pours an extremely deep black color, topped with a generous dark beige head with nice retention.
The aroma is very mild. All I could pick up was some malts and a tiny amount of roastiness.
The taste starts neutral, it has a balanced body, and finishes with a decent bitterness and some roasty feel. The aftertaste is nicely bitter.
Decent. Very,

Xingu (pronounced "shin-goo") doesn't look nearly as icky as it sounds. A fairly steadfast black beer, it shows colour and clarity only along its extremes, the very bottom and top, and only provided the light hits it just right. Even its head has a kind of greyness.

The way this beer smells, it might as well have come with training wheels. Any presence of roast or maltiness is so vague and subdued as to be inconsequential; even mainstream pale lager drinkers will find it insipid. For such a dark, intimidating looking beer this seems harmless.

The flavour fairs only slightly better. It has a subtle, underlying lactic-like sourness and tastes kind of like a chocolate milkshake. Never have I tried a Schwarzbier so neutral and so void of both sweetness and roast. There's perhaps a trace of almond milk flavour but it's very mild.

When I first came across Xingu, I remember reading that it was was launched by a group of native Brazilian women who sought to prevent the extinction of a local style of beer made from roasted corn and manioc root. A portion of the sales went to a charity protecting the Xingu River Basin and its indigenous inhabitants. Somehow I doubt all this...

For one, nothing in the beer or its packaging suggests unique ingredients. As for its roots, the beer's website tells a slightly different story (though it apparently still contributes to several charity initiatives despite now being owned by Latin America's largest beverage company). Bottom line: Xingu certainly isn't as exotic as it's made out to be. It's an OK black lager, at best.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on February 13, 2014.

The pour is a rich, deep brown color with a modest off-white head the becomes a ring. It looks like the style should look so that should be worth some higher points anyway.

How sweet it is!!! The aroma has a dark malts, molasses and maple syrup feel to it. Toast too.

The body is thin to medium.

The taste is also on the sweet side with the vaguest of bitterness sneaking up on the backside. But I will go away from this beer thinking "sweet" regardless of any other character I pick up.

This does not get high BA ratings but at the same time Xingu was one of those 'different' beers that taught me there was more to the world of beer than the American Pale Lagers I drank in 70's and 80's.

Taste - It is like the smell, roasted malts, a lot more sweet than bitter, has a somewhat chocolate taste to it.

Mouthfeel - It is a bit light and has too much carbonation.

Overall - It is a decent beer, nothing special.

This beer goes way back in the craft beer movement- I remember going to all kinds of random establishments 20 years ago that might not have much, but might have this beer. It's really not bad at all- as long as you aren't looking for intense flavors or a stout -like experience. It is somewhat thin and somewhat simple, but its redeeming features are its subtle roastiness, and especially, its slightly nutty graininess/grassiness (reminds me of wild rice) that adds an interesting note. Pleasant enough once in a while.

12 oz bottle was poured into a wide mouth snifter glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a smell mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a dark brown/black color with no clarity or bubbles seen coming up through the glass. Some lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Caramel, roasted malts, slightly burnt molasses, lager yeast, and a little chocolate.

Taste: Sweet caramel malts, roasted noted, molasses, burnt bitterness, lager yeastiness, and a little chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, a little chewy, light to medium bodied, some bitterness in the end, and

Overall: Pretty nice alternative to a stout and porter. Very enjoyable.

Old rating from probably 2010. 33 cl. bottle @ home: very sweet slightly roasted malts dominate, milk chocolate, with a hint of coffee & liquorice, wood no bitterness, nice, at the bottom of my glass I found tiny residues floating that resembled pieces of shag tobacco. Not bad despite what I have been led to believe.

Black Beer
12oz to libbey modern pint
Stamp LO12JA2, Purchased ~June 2013

A – Completely opaque and non-translucent. A very dark brown, heck it’s black. Thin cocoa colored head.

S – Dark fruits, very plum-y with some cherry. A tiny bit of alcohol. Has a mustiness to the fruit, like the plums fell to the ground a few days ago. Can’t decide if I like it or not, but I know Aprihop grew on me. As it warms a bit of cocoa comes out.

T – The taste matches the smell a little, giving the beer a juice-like taste. Definitely fruity, but it’s not just plum-like. There’s perhaps also a dash of grape and something else. There’s a pinch of cocoa on the swallow, that finishes out the taste nicely.

M – Smooth, medium bodied, pretty wet finish. Definitely like adult juice (not wine). Pretty refreshing without effervescence or dryness. Just nice, cool liquid.

O – Pleasantly surprised with this one. The taste is quite good with a complementary mouthfeel, even if the smell is a bit grungy. I suppose the taste is a bit grungy too, but it works. I just looked up the style, it’s a schwarbier. That should’ve been half-way obvious. It is totally off for style. But it’s a good beer. I’d buy a 6er (at the right price, not $2.50/beer) and have one or two to start off sporting events with. Also I think it’s a good morning beer. I am rating to style, with much leniency. I will buy again, but not this month.

A- Pours a very dark, thick looking dark brown color, similar to Coke or Root Beer. The head isn't very prominent at all, pouring about a half inch in thickness and quickly dissipating into a half moon shaped thin film. Lacing is better with wisps of foam clinging to the side of my glass. From the top of the liquid, I can see that there is modest carbonation rising to the top.

S- Very malty aroma immediately noted, with thick sticky sweetness, with the likes of caramel, cola, toffee, chocolate and dark fruit mixed in here. The finish is not hoppy at all...just lingering sweetness...

T- This is a very nice tasting brew...I like the overall taste, which is closely following the aromas, but there is more of a burnt barley kernel flavor....more Earthy and dry, which balances the sweet caramel and chocolate notes that are found. The finish is has some bitterness, but I find is more astringent than anything....I quite like the balanced nature of the flavor!

M- This has a lighter mouthfeel than the overall appearance would have suggested. I also noticed that there is a sticky, cloying feel that lingers on the palate after the finish, which is a change from the astringent dryness that I tasted immediately after the swallow. Carbonation is smooth and the flavors burst really well on the palate.

O- I find this to be a highly drinkable black lager! I would recommend this one as it is full of flavor, smooth, well balanced and the alcohol doesn't show at all. I would buy this again and feel it would work well with a meal and holds it own too! Solid beer!

355ml bottle poured into pint glass 29/7/13

A dark cola with a deep edge, thick mocha film quickly falls leaving just a few spots of lace

S molasses. brown sugar, coco and cold coffee, faint nutty notes and some bruised plum

T still a little sweet but it works, more coco and less cold coffee but still has some over-ripe fruit

M light-medium with not quite enough bubbles to cream it up but it has some life, molasses and fruity coco on the finish

O not a bad black lager from an unlikely source, I didn't mind this one and although its not going to move mountains its a respectable brew

easy to drink and has more flavor then I expected, I wouldn't look for it but I'd drink it again

A- pours a dark deep blackish red with tan head. Retention is pretty good.

S- hints of caramel, cola, smells sweet. I can already tell there are a lot of adjuncts in this. Probably Rapidura sugar judging off smell and country of origin. Faint smell of wet socks too...

T- little to no hop bitterness, very sweet with a molasses finish

M- this is surprisingly attenuated for how sweet it is, probably due to the high use of adjuncts

O- Looks pretty good. Smells, tastes and makes me feel like poop.

Poured this 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured a dark brown color, produced a thick off white head, decent retention and left some lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of citric lemon, dark fruit, coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. Medium bodied, not really a traditional Schwarzbier but it is worth a try. The flavor profile consisted of roasted malt, slight hints of coffee and chocolate. It was a little thin. Overall, decent- not great.

Another beer that gives me some melancholic feelings. Great label with export appeal.
Black color with a caramel head with medium retention.
Very faint aroma of caramel and toasted malts.
Sweet malty flavor with hints of caramel, cola, toasted malts and adjuncts, its original sin.
Dry with a medium bitterness aftertaste, and residual toasted notes.
Light body with medium carbonation.
Not bad, though could be less sweet and the adjunct plus caramel addition does not help.

A: Black thick body with a creamy head with low rentention.

S:Toasted malts, coffee and some caramel.

T:Follows the smell with a light coffee flavour and some toasted malts. The body is light and the beer is very carbonated with gives it a spicy flavour.

M: coffee and spicy aftertaste in equilibrium make Xingu a quite fresh beer.

O: A good beer, that lack the thickness of flavor of other black beers, but still a good cost/benefit beer with characteristics of its own.

Pours a black color. 1/2 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of pale malt, slight sweet malt, slight hint of hop, and adjunct. Fits the style of a Schwarzbier. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight pale malt, hint of hop, hint of roasted malt, and slight adjunct. Overall, good appearance, but the adjunct hurts both the aroma and body.

A- This brew is pitch black with a light brown head. There is some lacing on the sides.

S- Smells quite sweet and malty with hints of dark fruit as well as some hop character.

Dark brown (almost black) body with a thin, tannish head. Sweet malt aroma blended with hints of black licorice with a slight touch of roasted grain in the background. Smooth and rich body and flavor; hints of chocolate and mint in the taste. Traces of hop bitterness at the finish.

This beer pleasantly surprised me as I somehow (in my prejudiced mine) expected a weak and less-than-awe-inspiring beer. Well, I've been wrong before (just ask my wife)! This is a very pleasing, robust, and satisfying dark brew. This is a very malt-forward beer with a near perfect touch of hop bitterness at the finish. Bold and complex in a very pleasant way. Recommended.

A: Black with a fleeting light brown head that bubbles away like a soda.
S: Initially grassy, with roasted grains and caramel malt. Lager yeast twang shows as it warms and begins to remind me a little of Full Sail Sessions Black (which is a good thing).
T: Comes off very sweet. Heavy bread and caramel flavors dominate with a bit of roasted grains showing very briefly and then flavor reverts to an overly sweet soda-like maltiness. Slightly bitter finish doesn’t detract much from the sweetness.
M: Thin bodied with somewhat harsh carbonation.

Gratingly sweet. The apparently low proportion of black malt/bittering hops leaves this with a rather hollow flavor. This is definitely not what Percy Fawcett was searching for.

Served in a Great divide pint glass

A - Pours opaque with a thin cola head. Lower retention but decent lacing. Nice looking beer.

S - Sorghum molasses, sweet toasted malt, hints of chocolate and berry fruit,

T - Super sweet malt, molasses, tangy acidic fruit, sugary cola, light cocoa, very mild grassy hop provide light bitterness, chalky lager yeast comes through on the finish.

M - Low to medium carbonation, slick and wet feel, light to medium body.

This is a little too sweet for my liking. It reminds me of sweet cola. Good looking beer though.

Single finger tan head with nice lacing on a deep brown body with some light passing through. Aroma of lightly smoked and roasted malts, breads. Flavors also very bready with dark malts, earthy malts and slightly burnt toast. Hint of cocoa came out with the spicey chicken i had at the brazillian steakhouse. Medium body and moderate to high carbonation. Nice balance between sweet and roast. Went well with the multiple meats at the Brazilian steakhouse in Vegas.
