wow, this beer really kinda sucked .... really failed in every department with the expectation of some good lacing ... holly hunter is a whore ... smells of odd old oil and burnt rainforest ... has a dirty taste to it ... bootsey threw up like ... a crappy brew..

I got this in a variety pack from World Market.
This beer poured a nice black color. But there was absolutely no smell at all. It tasted like burnt plastic with a little bit of black licorace taste and a bit of chocolate. Had a watery mouth feel for the type.
Maybe I just got a bad bottle. But this I would not buy again.

12 oz bottle without a freshness date. Pours a near black color with an ample tan foam. Retention is ok, lacing is good.

Nose has most of the typical German schwarzbier characteristics...roasty sweet malt and some black licorice and a hint of nuttiness. Some unexpected fruit pops up as well as a touch of cardboard.

Quite fruity for a lager, sourish notes with some strawberry tartness. Malts are all over the place: from nuts to roast to toffee sweetness. I remember not liking this beer 5 years ago when I first had it, and that feeling continues here. Just does not display any sort of identity and the multitude of flavors does not jive right for me. A sweetly acrid fruit flavor makes me want to pour this down the drain. Ugh, no bueno.

A fizzy, two fingers of latte deposits patchy lacing over a dark brown, almost black beer with red highlights.

Soap dominates the aroma while some toasted malt is in the background, but let's face it, what we have here is a bar of Ivory soap.

Burnt toast takes top billing, albeit marginally, over that soap. Bitterness comes on strong at first, but sweet malt quickly balances it out, however not in a pleasant way. Unfortunately, there is a long, light, bitter finish.

The body is light-to-medium, with a slick texture and prickly carbonation, followed by metallic astringency.

While I am happy to have tried Xingu, I am even more pleased to have only purchased one bottle. My flute glass, however, is recoiling from the experience. Brazil clearly has much more beauty than this beer would suggest to the uninitiated.

Looking at other people's reviews, perhaps I got hold of a clunker. I'll give it another shot, and amend my review, if this one proves to be an anomaly.

Got signed up for the beer of the month club--- so I got a 6 pack of this beer (which is widely distributed and available at nearly every store that I frequent).

Poured into a Pils glass.

Dark, chocolatey body is really a deep red when held up to a light... The dark tan head begins as 1 finger and slowly settles into a frothy film of micro-bubbles with some giant clumps of big soapy suds scattered sporadically. Lacing is actually decent-- chunks and rings hang hard to the side of the glass.

The smell is sweet. Rich, sweet, velvety malts. No noticeable hop notes in the nose... Caramel malt. Lots of it.

The taste is sweet. Very sweet. A little too sweet. Reminds me of Coca Cola-- sugary taste, sticky caramelized sugars that cling to your teeth, very carbonated. This isn't completely awful, but I'd say it isn't good. I had to save a bottle to review-- the others I gave away. I tried this once before, and decoded against reviewing it then... This time, I couldnt resist.

I won't buy this beer. I'm disappointed in the club for having two lousy selections. I'll review the other one soon.

Nice black color, almost no head. Smells very fruity, but with a slight hint of chemicals. Tastes less fruity than it smells. Motor oil taste hits about 1 second after. Aftertaste is awful. Now it smells like motor oil too. It smells much better 3 inches from the glass than just above.

Pours a dark brown with some nice scarlet edges, the cap is sandy brown and leaves some adequate amounts of lace. The nose smells off in a rotten vegetable way, also smells like onion. The flavors within are not much better. This taste roasted with some underlying vinegar flavors that are a little bit offensive and just don't flow. A very dry finish doesn't help this strange offering. Looks nice and that's about all I can find worthy about this offering.

Dark black color, with a clear maroon revealed at the bottom of the glass. Head is small, just a thin tan layer. Smell has some light roasted malts, and slight grass. Taste is pretty bland. Small roasted malt in the flavor, but not very strong, slight malty grass, and not much in the way of hops. Beers from brazil haven't impressed me yet.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a beer glass.

Appearance: Pours nearly black, with visible mahogany tints in the thinnest portions of the glass. Mauve/cream colored head is fleeting, and leaves only minimum lacing. The purple tints in the foam are very intriguing.

Smell: Nice! Sweet maltiness with some licorice and/or anise. There's a strange recollection to red wine as well...aged red wine. As I said, nice.

Taste: Cloying sweetness with licorice as the focus. Far sweeter than I remember it when I had it on tap. Molasses. Malty.

Mouthfeel: Like drinking velvet. Smooth. Yet also very oily, which adds to the unpleasantness.

Drinkability: I don't recommend this beer to anyone.

It seems as though I remember Xingu being much less cloying. I may have to try it on tap and review it again. As it stands, this is one of the worst tasting beers I've had, seeing as the taste is so strong AND so wrong at the same time.

poured form bottle to sniffer, this is a prime example that color does not dictate strength, or big flavors. the beer looked great in the glass with a rich stout like appearance. The beer had head that quickly diminished, (which is usually a quality of high alcohol brews). I knew nothing about this beer before I drank it so i had a preconceived notion of what to expect, I was hoping for something toasty and warming. After 3 sips down the drain it went.

Appearance: Straight pour into a pint glass. The color is black, but light was able to pass through when I held it to my lamp. Two fingers of tan head developed and dissipated to leave a spotted lacing, trails long the glass, and a ring around the edge.

Smell: Mostly caramel and cocoa. It has a roasted coffee hint, but it is very subtle. Maybe I am imagining it.

Taste: The mouthfeel is watered down and feels very carbonated; it is like a combination soda-beer. There is a nice roasted characteristic, but it is too watered down to thoroughly enjoy. However, it is a schwarzbier. Along with the roasted coffee (?), there are also flavors of caramel and cocoa.

Drinkability: I am disappointed. I was expecting something much more substantial, but it really truly does taste much more like soda to me.

black but not opaque. cream colored head. very yeasty nose, a bit of a skunky note to it. taste is very strange with a spicy, yeasty flavor mix. kind of a milk chocolate like flavor. Mostly this is dominated by yeast though and i cant say i cared for it. i wonder if this beer is filtered and if not, how it would taste if it were. not a great beer, kind of glad i only bought one.

Pours a dark brownish black, looks great I can't wait to try it. The aroma is strange, a surpising stale odor of a macro euro lager, not very pleasant. The flavor isn't much better than the odor. This brew tastes like somebody watered down one ounce of a decent dark lager with eleven ouces of a macro lager. There's something very artificial about this beer and I don't like it. I will be steering clear of this one in the future.

Black in color with a decent tan head, though it disappears quickly.
Aroma is roasty, malty and fruity.
The flavor is a bit sweet for me, but it is a bit roasty. Sweetness is definitely the main characteristic, it is fruity and juice like.
Light in the mouth feel department, but I could in no way shape or form drink a second. The sugary sweetness makes this a bit difficult for me to drink.

dark ruby body with big bubbles sticking to the inside of the glass-med activity. no haze. light brown rapidly deflated head, dies to a ring and that's all, no lace.
only a wafer of a malty scent, weak scent.
malt leads mostly weak and watery flavor. comes off the palate like soda pop. the carbonation is like pepsi so if you like that sort of feel it may be drinkable to you. i didn't think it was any good.

This dark beer (I love dark beer!) is just not my style, I guess. It's right up there with those lesser stouts from Finland and Poland, the ones that are akin to automobile sludge. There are too many excellent opaque beers (ale OR lager) to waste time with this one. It's not horrible, but simply sitting there and not doing anything does not a good beer make.

Recuerdo cariñosamente esta cerveza de mi adolescencia. Esto es la manera más suave y más dulce que el tru cerveza negra que recuerdo. Esto era potable y tan domesticado como la torsión de la cima. Viva drinkability. Hacia abajo con originalidad.

I remember this lovingly as an adventurous beer of my youth. Back then it was exotic and different.

This is the sweeter and smoothest of the neo-schwartzbier far more tame and sweet than I remember from the 22oz.'s of my youth. This is now so drinkable and so domesticated and downright sweet.

The simplicity is disappointing. As the torsión of the top.

Long live drinkability! Downward with originality.

A- pours a dark deep blackish red with tan head. Retention is pretty good.

S- hints of caramel, cola, smells sweet. I can already tell there are a lot of adjuncts in this. Probably Rapidura sugar judging off smell and country of origin. Faint smell of wet socks too...

T- little to no hop bitterness, very sweet with a molasses finish

M- this is surprisingly attenuated for how sweet it is, probably due to the high use of adjuncts

O- Looks pretty good. Smells, tastes and makes me feel like poop.

Presentation: 12oz. brown bottle; no "bottled on" or "best before" warning; purchased as a stray single for $1.09 from the Wine House in West LA.

Appearance: Pours a dark, dark brown; rocky, half-inch, cocoa-brown head; one-inch head with a rough pour; not much in the way of lacing or head retention.

Aroma: Faintly of molasses and roasted malt.

Taste: Mildly sweet; firm notes of black licorice, roasted malt and molasses; mild bitterness; faint hint of smoke; thin, watery mouthfeel.

Notes: Flavor profile turns me off; cloying black licorice qualities; can't say I'm a huge fan of black beers, but have certainly had tastier interpretations of the style; poured a third of this down the sink.

Poured from a bottle into a pilsner glass, beer is what you might expect from a "black" beer, very dark in color although not quite black and a root beer colored head. The nose is very underwhelming; some faint malty/grainy arise, maybe a bit of skunk. There doesn't appear to be any freshness date so I can't tell how old this beer is but based on the fact that it came from Brazil all the way up to me in Decatur IL, I'm guessing it wasn't brewed last week. The taste is more of the same with the sweet and grainy malt coming out with a more definite skunkiness. The only clue that this beer isn't a pale euro lager is the finish is a bit dryer. Light in body and carbonation. Decent to try, nothing impressive but in fairness I'm sure this would taste much better if ordered in Brazil.

I pick up this different looking black lager from Tesco (UK).

Appearance: Dark brown to black in colour, with a tan foamy head that fade very quickly. Moderate carbonation.

Aroma: Initially strong aroma of blackcurrant on the nose, dark fruits, with a sweet sugariness. Lots of dark malts behind, providing a biscuit scented base.

Taste: Quite a sweet cloying taste upfront, much like a cheap champagne. There is some liquorish, and some dark maltiness but flavours are pretty much buried under the initial sweetness. A bit of bitterness in the finish but it is short lived and weak.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, with a unpleasant sticky feel, and tarry texture.

Drinkability: I was pleasantly surprised by the aroma, it was very different to the norm and unique but as good as the uniqueness of the aroma is the taste is unique but bad. It has an overpowering sweetness in the start that almost masks all the other characters in the taste. Bought this on a whim, but won't be doing it again.

Pours a dark brownish black with a foamy tan head. Aroma is ubersweet coffee, caramel, and fermenting fruits (that last bit adds a dimension of sourness). Flavor is sugary with caramel and an almost milky note to go with roasted and slightly acidic malts and an aspiriny finish. Saccharine and astringent. No, I mean those words as nouns, not adjectives. Literally tastes like it was made with Sweet-n-Lo and facewash. At first I thought the most objectionable aspect to this beer was the unrelenting syrupiness but now I'm thinking it has to be the gross finish. Total NSAID bomb.

From a recently purchased pack, no freshness date.

Pours with a syrupy mocha head that has okay staying power and good lacing. Very close to black with brown highlights on the edges, as to be expected.

Slightly burnt, sour smell, not overpoweringly roasted. Hops are detectable and piney. Some honey.

Coffee mixed with Pepsi. Surprisingly sweet, still some gentle roasted flavors but nothing burnt, just toasted. Hops are minty, not very bitter.

Creamy mouthfeel but slightly undercarbonated.

It's okay, sugar is the main flavor... I would like a bit more roasted malt and hops, this is unbalanced. This tastes like it didn't finish fermenting. Not too bad though... Would be good as an after dinner beer.

Upon pour, I had a tough time picking up the aroma. Is it somewhat roasty or sweet? Tough to tell, too faint. Otherwise, its a beautiful looking beer. Big fluffy tan head that leaves tremendous lace and a nice opaque black body. The mouthfeel is smooth but still full. The taste can best be described as interesting. I would say its mostly caramelish, but at the same time it has a dull cola taste as an overtone. This is definitely more malty than anything. It finishes very sweetly, kind of like a candy residue. Its not the greatest brew, and I probably wouldn't seek it out again.
