A: Pours an opaque near black in color with some highlights of dark amber and some light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation near the surface. The beer has a finger tall tan head that slowly redues to a thin film with several small slightly thicker patches and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light to moderate aromas of roasted and caramel malts with light hints of sweetness and some dark fruits.
T: This beer has a very pleasant moderately malty flavor with notes of roasted, caramel, and burnt malts flavors that includes nutty and sweet notes. There is also a hint of dark fruits and very little bitterness.
M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin.
O: Very easy to drink and enjoyable - nothing exceptional but it is definitely a sessionable beer. This was the first time I had this beer since my college graduation when I initially tried this beer - this was the mid-1990s when there was not nearly the craft beers available... Still enjoyable.

Pours with a three-finger brown head that leaves some lace. Solid black color. Light-medium bodied and light carbonation. Slightly malty nose. Starts sweet - hints of molasses and toffee finishes mellow - not dry. $10.49 for a 6-pak of 12oz. bottles from Tulley's Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

Pours a clear brown, nearly black brew.
Smell is clean and mildly malty with a slight chocolate scent.
Taste is mildly sweet with a mild floral hop flavor almost wine like. There is a grassy flavor to this too. Mild bitterness in the aftertaste.
Mouth feel is OK.
Drinkability is good, looks like a porter and tastes like an extra malted Euro lager.

If you're looking for some of the characteristics in a porter, but want something easy drinking, this is a good beer to grab. It's chocolatey sweet, a hint of banana, with a roasted/smokey character, ended with a lightly hopped finish. This unheralded treat from Brazil went well with my honey BBQ wings. Some might say it's too sweet/out of balance, but it worked for me.

I’ve seen this beer go for upwards of $11 beans at high end restaurants, I am glad to have found it for $1.69, a good deal considering it’s from Brazil. Poured into a pint glass. I had a great review written up for this but I keep getting knocked off the site when trying to upload reviews, so here is a shorter version.
Xingu Black Beer is black, it’s a very black color even up to light, with some faint reds bursting at the sides. Some nice dark tan foam that forms a cap with retention and spray paint lace on the way down. A good looker if I’ve seen one. Scents include chocolate, cocco, grain, faint hop aroma, think earthy, licorice and faint dark fruit.
The dark fruit that I get was present in Dragon Stout from Jamaica, although that beer was god awful. Im guessing this flavor will deteriorate over time causing a sour/putrid taste in Xingu which seems to have better legs. It’s a rotted fruit flavor that I pick up in dark beers from the South America area. Other flavors include chocolate, cocco, licorice, roast, faint coffee and earthy hop taste. Pretty well rounded at this point
Feel is approaching medium but not quite there yet. The carbonation is low making for an easier ride down. This kinda coats the mouth real quick and leaves even quicker. I drank my bottle over a long period of time, I was just not that interested in it. It’s OK beer, but that South American taste is there and, well, it’s just there. One and done.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, clear, with an off white good sized froth and a nice display of lace as well.
Smell: Aroma is full of grain, fresh wort, floral hops, and a very faint breadyness. Somewhat hoppy.
Taste: Black malts upfront with a roasted, nutty quality. Tea like hops emerge mid palate, doing the job to balance. Malty, well balanced and quenching.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied, though on the light end. Mild carbonation, smooth, silky feel and semi clean finish. Quite appetizing.
Overall: A very solid and drinkable black lager. Would reach for this in a session without hesitation, and would be nice to pair with a spicy stir fry.

A dark Euro or Schwarzbier? eh, anywho...
Pours a dark, dark ruby color and I'm leaning towards the Schwarzbier. Off light-brown head was nice at first, but dwindled to a collar and didn't much return.
Smell is meh...some hints of charred chocolate and dark sweet bread, some toast. Lighter fruit aromas.
Unripe dark fruit taste with a side of blackberry jam, semi sweetened. Mouthfeel could use a bit more bite as this one becomes stale and smooth, which hinders the taste a bit.

Xingu (pronounced "shin-goo") doesn't look nearly as icky as it sounds. A fairly steadfast black beer, it shows colour and clarity only along its extremes, the very bottom and top, and only provided the light hits it just right. Even its head has a kind of greyness.
The way this beer smells, it might as well have come with training wheels. Any presence of roast or maltiness is so vague and subdued as to be inconsequential; even mainstream pale lager drinkers will find it insipid. For such a dark, intimidating looking beer this seems harmless.
The flavour fairs only slightly better. It has a subtle, underlying lactic-like sourness and tastes kind of like a chocolate milkshake. Never have I tried a Schwarzbier so neutral and so void of both sweetness and roast. There's perhaps a trace of almond milk flavour but it's very mild.
When I first came across Xingu, I remember reading that it was was launched by a group of native Brazilian women who sought to prevent the extinction of a local style of beer made from roasted corn and manioc root. A portion of the sales went to a charity protecting the Xingu River Basin and its indigenous inhabitants. Somehow I doubt all this...
For one, nothing in the beer or its packaging suggests unique ingredients. As for its roots, the beer's website tells a slightly different story (though it apparently still contributes to several charity initiatives despite now being owned by Latin America's largest beverage company). Bottom line: Xingu certainly isn't as exotic as it's made out to be. It's an OK black lager, at best.

Poured from the bottle into a Pokal style glass. Twist off cap. No obvious bottle date.
Off the pour, a solid light tan and sudsy head, maybe two fingers, but dissapears quite quickly.. Body color is dark walnut brown with not a chance to see through at all.
Nose is interesting, but a bit strange. Mild malts, an odd sweetness that I can't pinpoint, somewhere between powdered Ovaltine and weak coffee.
Really nice creamy mouthfeel, but a taste palate unlike most Schwarz with a fruity finish. Aftertaste hits at fruit red cherry, roast character played down. Palate though is creamy and dense like a a stout, a very odd combination.
A real interesting beer, but I rather don't mind this at all.

Poured a deep brown hue with a one finger foamy off white head. There was good retention and lacing.
The smell featured elements of caramel, roasted barley and a touch of vanilla.
The taste consisted of a soft grainy roasted malt with a good dose of caramel.
The mouthfeel was typical of the style.
Overall a tasty schwarzbier. Certainly one of the better beers from the region.

Pours a big rich light brown head and leaves a nice big lacing that slowly fades away.
Very light roasted malt aroma, maybe some caramel hints coming through.
Roasted malt with a very light caramel to coffee hints couldn't really distinguish which is sometimes a good thing. When a beer tastes to much like coffee couldn't you just go to Starbucks?
Likewise if a beer is too fruity why not just have some pie and ice cream? anyway....
Decent almost full bodied mouthfeel with a light almost pasty dry after taste.
After my anitial drink or two I was hoping this beer had more of a Murphy's or Guinness taste but by the time I finished my 12 oz. glass of this I was pretty satisfied with it.
For a black or dark looking beer it was surprisingly easy to drink, without an overbearing coffee or other taste as some blacks and stouts carry with them, could probably go through a 6 of these pretty quickly.

A: Poured a dark cola color with cherry highlights with a thin, fizzy, cherry-tan colored head that left a fair lacing.
S: On the nose was sweet roasted grains, coffee grinds, dark cherries and sweet vanilla creamer notes.
T: sweet roasted grains with creamer/lactose sweetness. The flavor was smooth, sweet and fruity with cherries. Overall the beer drank like a cold sweetened cup of coffee, in a good way.
M: light, smooth in texture with sweet lactose hints.
D: A sweet dark roasted treat that may be limited by its own sweetness in regards to multiples.

A - very dark brownish black; quarter of an inch of brown, soft, loose head; good retention
S - faint roast, faint chocolate; apples
T - apples, very faint roasted malts, musty, grainy, yeasty, mildly bitter, grassy in the finish
M - smooth, lightly carbonated, medium bodied
Well, it looks the part but it falls short on flavor. The apple-like, acetaldehyde off flavor is overwhelming and the roasted malt character is underwhelming. Overall, it's not worth a try unless, like me, you just want to try your first beer from Brazil.

Dark Ruby. Not much light gets through. Thin, tight dusting of brown head. Lace is moderate. Fresh aroma of blackened malts, caramel, roasted barley and coffee. The taste is really pretty nice. Bitter coffee bean and chocolate and sweet caramel and vanilla... Yeah, definitely nice. The mouthfeel is a little weak. Light bodied and slightly watery. Could use a little more carbonation too. If the mouthfeel were better, this would really be a top notch brew. As it is, I'd drink this any day of the week. Great taste.

More brown beer. Tan head, minimal lacing, but high carbonation. Aroma was faint, maybe coffee.
Taste, a little zest for the color, similar to Negra Modelo, this is a bit more challenging. Not a lot to back it up after the appearance, thought this was nonetheless a bigger beer.
Kinda pricey, nothing in the mouthfeel to write home about. I really don't know what makes this beer differentiate from a brown ale. Its a little bit, barely, hoppier, which I guess will put it in the schwarzbier category, but the yeast doesn't seem to be different.

This beer looks black at first, but a closer inspection reveals that while it's dark, it's quite clear and has very nice ruby highlights. A collar of fine bubbles formed after the rocky cap settled and there was a bit of streaky lacing. The aroma was malty and grainy, notes of barley husk and cereal grains. Slight roasted character, but only once it warmed. Sweet and malty flavour, some caramel and brown sugar, slight nuttiness, grainy. Bitterness was muted, but served to somewhat balance the malt character. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, decent texture. For a malt forward beer, this works for me. I haven't had this in more than 10 years and was worried that my fond memories would lead me to disappointment. I'm relieved that this didn't happen and that I quite enjoyed Xingu again.

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass.
Dark brown coming out of the bottle, but near black and nearly opaque in the glass. Nice looking 1-finger tan head dissipates quickly leaving a minimal top coat and lacing.
Aroma: quite mild but spicier than expected, leaving the impression of hops and medium-roasted barley.
T: not very good as it first hits the tongue, but this is soon replaced by a well-balanced, if rather simple, flavor of medium and dark malts tinged with a spiciness from hops or something else. No smoke or burnt qualities. Approaches 4.
M: super smooth despite a slightly aggressive level of carbonation. Medium+ body.
O: An enjoyable and very drinkable black beer with a fine mouthfeel but a weak aroma.

12oz picked up today at New Vintage for about $2.. poured into my New Belgium goblet.
1" lite brown head drops very quickly leaving no real lacing... black brew with only deep ruby highlites when held to a light.
Aroma does not smell black.. toasty and hints of caramel... low cold coffee notes.
Flavor is less malty but has a lingering sweetness. Fairly clean toasted malts have touches of caramel.. but ultimately it gives way to a front of the tongue sweet finish... a little acrid as it warms. Light/medium mouthfeel with substantial carbonation.
Nothing special but not terrible, I bought it because I had never seen it in Boise before.. I probably won't buy it again unless I am brewing a Schwarzbier.

Pours a black color. 1/2 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of pale malt, slight sweet malt, slight hint of hop, and adjunct. Fits the style of a Schwarzbier. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight pale malt, hint of hop, hint of roasted malt, and slight adjunct. Overall, good appearance, but the adjunct hurts both the aroma and body.
